I agree, but is jimmy even healthy? I have no knowledge of recovery from a patella tendon tear. How long it takes to get back to normal and stuff like that.. Hopefully thats why they are looking at yeremiah bell, trying to find a vet safety so we don't have the pressure to take barron at 16
I believe he will not be ready for the start of the year but his rehab is supposedly going very well. So having him as insurance for Landry on a low risk deal (maybe 1 mil) is totally worth it IMO. He should be healthy by at least week 3, knows the system, is a leader on the defense, and worst case provides depth. I think I'd rather take him over Bell.
I don't often disagree with you, but here I do.Rex likes linebacker types at safety. Additionally there is very little difference between being a free or strong safety in Rex's scheme. Barron has the size, instinct & closing speed to start from day 1 for this defense. He is a very safe pick, fills a huge need & his upside is a pro bowl caliber player. I'm not suggesting "Barron or bust" in round 1, & I would be upset if they traded up for him, but he's a viable option for the Jets in round 1. As for next year's safety crop, "next year's safety crop" is always supposed to be better. It's one of those positions where really good prospects are hard to come by. Barron is a legit top 20 talent.
I am going to copy your statement about me by saying normally I dont disagree with your comments or assessments, but on Barron I do. While I do understand Rex's scheme allows run stopping safeties to be more productive , we do have to realize, and I think Rex realizes as well that Tight ends and slot WRs are murdering us. Barron, to me, isnt that fluid of a player to be effective in deep coverage nor can he cover slot WRs in the NFL. If we had signed a guy like Nelson or gotten some other effective FS, I think Barron (in a trade down situation) is a viable option, since he'd fit great in our run stopping safety role. But at 16 , I dont think he is worth taking over clearly better players that would be available (as I listed before), who would make a much bigger impact.
All I am going to say about the bolded is Brandon Taylor out of LSU is the perfect description, save for the certain ability he can start day 1. Plus he is a great playmaker as well. Taylor is a better coverage play than Barron. Barron is a better athlete and has the ability to make a big hit more frequently than Taylor does (although that guy can lay the wood as well). I would much rather use #16 elsewhere and grab Taylor in the 3rd round.
nowhere did I say that Barron would be my #1 choice or my dream selection, what I said in my original post was that given all the negativity surrounding Upshaw and the other OLBs likely to be around at #16 , then I wouldn't be adverse to the team going in a different direction and taking Barron or the top available OL player (I dont think therer is much or any chance Floyd will be there when we pick). I would be just as happy (in some cases, more happy) for them to take most of the players you listed (even though the best of them are very unlikely to to be there) but to try to argue that it is totally off the wall that the Jets would consider taking Barron seems unrealistic (IMHO).
Honestly, I think Barron is going to be overdrafted, and I think by someone ahead of us... Supposedly the cowboys have serious interest in him, and so do the Eagles. He’s just not a special, cant miss player like Eric Berry or Early Thomas were. He’s not a ballhawk and has just average coverage skills. I would be fine with him in a trade back, but I dont think he would make it past SD. It sounds like every team in the teens has serious interest in Barron and I doubt he makes it to the 20’s.
