Wes Welker and Jabar Gaffney are among the best weapons in the history of football? Welker's a very good possession receiver, but he's not completely unstoppable. Spagnuolo figured it out.
Well, Moss is great and Welker is pretty good, but where is the top notch RB and TE? The 2008 Patriots do not have the best weapons the NFL has ever seen.
I dunno when Gaffney(spelling) is your number three, that's a pretty stacked team. Moss himself makes everybody else around him better.
Okay, well they have a high powered offense, with a solid O-line. Point is, Cassel will not be worth the money he will want.
cassel is only doing good b/c he is on NE, c'mon you think its coincidence that cassel is looking like tom brady. I guarrantee whatever team (pray its not us) gets cassel he will be a bust and look like shit. It doesn't matter who is behind center on NE they will look like a pro bowler because of the talent around the qb. thats just my opinion anyways... The smart thing would be an open competition between KC and Ratliff and maybe bring in a vet qb to try out as well, then when the time is right draft a fucking francise qb already!
No competition, make Clemens the starter. Competition is not going to make us better. Development of the talent will. Mangini's crew is pretty good at scouting talent, but I have yet to see this CS develop anyone. Develop Clemens instead of making him guess what he needs to do.
He doesn't look like Brady though, he looks like a less talented player than Brady, but one who is still capable of being an NFL QB. No "system" is good enough to completely mask a bad QB, and no QB is good enough to turn an awful team into a winner. Cassel's going to be overpaid as a free agent anyway, that's the nature of the market. The question from the Jets perspective is whether he's worth whatever investment they would have to make to sign him, or if they'd be better off trying to develop Clemens and/or drafting a QB.
When has Jabar Gaffney ever been anything BETTER than a number three receiver? (Hint: the answer is "never.")
Don't we have a high powered offense with a solid offensive line? But I kind of agree that Cassel will have to be overpaid. Whether he is worth it or not can only be seen after he actually plays on the new team.
Where is the "none of the above" option? Kellen Clemens is awful, he can't even prove himself in a preseason exhibition game. I like Brett Ratliff, but he needs more time and development. Forget Cassel, I don't trust that guy.
I don't think we can trust the coaching staff to develop him, though. Can we risk a lost season over developing him?
Yeah but he sure looks like a pro bowler with Moss and Welker. He's not great, but hes more than capable. On a GOOD team, not the early David Carr Texans, it shows. Remember who burned us most in the 2nd game in NE this season? (Hint:Sure wasn't Moss.)
I looks absolutely nothing like a Pro Bowler. You're judging him off of one game where had had 7 catches for 86 yards. He had 88 the next week against Miami, but otherwise he's only had 1 other game over 50 yards receiving, and it was 51 in Week 3 against Miami. Only twice this season has he had more than 5 catches in a game, and has gone three games without a catch. Only one season has he gone over 50 catches, and he averaged 8.9 yards per reception that year. Jabar Gaffney sucks.
He i dont disagree with you about him not being a number 1, but as a third receiver hes not so bad.and he does seem to be Cassel's 3rd down guy. Anywho Point is Cassel's got help. Not Like the Jets don't have talent, but this staff doesn't know how to utilize it properly
I agree that as a third receiver, he's not so bad. But your post said: To me, that implies that someone with Gaffney's talent should be BETTER than a number three receiver, which is totally untrue. I'm not trying to be a dick here, I just don't think Gaffney is among "the best weapons the NFL has ever seen," as NYJ2K08 put it. And I agree that the staff doesn't utilize talent properly, but I don't think Cassel would be terrible on the Jets. He doesn't have the same arm strength as Favre, at least for the deep ball. (It's not like Favre is good at the deep ball, IMO, because everything is overthrown and/or intercepted). But he's also better than what Pennington was (for us, anyway). I think that Cassel is a nice inbetween guy in terms of arm strength. It's not going to be a problem. The Jets don't really need to go deep down field to have a successful passing game. Look at what they did against Tennessee with their slant routes. I think Cassel could be efficient in our system.
How can anyone say Clemens? Clemens had about the same type of opportunity as Ratliff did during the preseason and obviously Ratliff out shined. Clemens can be a decent backup but nothing I have seen thus far makes me think he can b anything special. He doesn't even look to be in good physical shape.
