I don't think low-mileage really matters, or at least history tells us that it doesn't. I believe the stat was that Frank Gore was the first player since John Riggins in 1984 to rush for over 1,000 yards at age 33 or older. That's pretty incredible when you really think about it in that it's been 32 years since someone has achieved that feat. Runningbacks are often done at 30, are a statistical anamoly if they perform at 31 or 32 and have virtually no chance at being successful if they're any older. I know you mentioned 32 as the bench mark for Powell, but two starting years in your late 20's after not doing it since you were in college would likely put him at the end of his career. It's a shame we wasted his prime, because he's definitely an explosive player. Who knows if he would've held up over a full season though.
Ramczyk should be the top rated lineman (McGlinchey if he declares). Cam Robinson is also there but I'd rather have the other two I mentioned
Bilal Powell is a pretty good player. He doesn't hurt you anywhere in the offense. He's a decent rusher and he's been playing with some real fire the last couple of seasons. He's an ok blocker and can definitely handle a blitzing DB or even an LB now and then. He's a good outlet receiver and he makes YAC, again the last two years have been good in that regards. You give him 200+ carries and he will break down. He's been a bit injury prone over the years and he's not a really big guy and the odds just say he will break down if the Jets really try to give him the rock over and over again. Get another guy in here to handle rotational duties and let Powell be just one of the better 3rd down backs in the NFL. He's real value in that role. You get a lot out of him. And if he has to be pressed into action to do more he's capable of that also, as we saw this year. Have what we have. Don't fantasize that it might be more. Enjoy Bilal Powell, 3rd down back and backup extraordinaire.
I think if handed the keys he would be smarter about taking hits and not break down. As is he typically gets 10 touches or less so he runs like his hair is on fire.. therefore more apt to get injured. I believe, and I don't really have anything tangible to prove it, that if he was the top back he would not break down for that very reason. the way he gutted it out through injury sunday in a completely meaningless game, I have much respect
I'd love to get Cook or Fournette and pair them with Powell..... We do that and fix the offensive line, the QB position may fix itself...... unless our qb's can screw up a handoff...... which come to think about it, they probably could..... lol
Can we get a coordinator or coach on this team that plays to the teams strength instead of forcing guys into roles that they aren't made for? Work with what we have got.
I have been pounding the table trying to make this point for years. Instead everyone wants to reach for a position we need or some fancy QB, etc.
Sorry but no. We only hire the kind of geniuses that need 10-11 new players to fit their system that worked so well in the past that they failed to get promoted by their former team and had to settle for a promotion with us instead. You are talking about the Jets who went from a 3-4 defense under Groh to a 4-3 defense under Herm (the players Herm didn't need anymore helped the Patriots win their first SB), back to a 3-4 defense under Mangini, followed by whatever hybrid defense Rex was trying to run, back to a 3-4 with Bowles. All along the way we kept changing offenses and requiring our coordinators to work without the benefit of ANY first round draft picks. Why change anything? What could go wrong?
Yes this Team is screwed up down and sideways with how to use players I think B Powell will set some Records as he is always chomping at the bit to run run run So I say "Run Billal Run,,," We get a younger guy in draft too and hopefully that OL shores up The Ultimate Destiny of an RB is to be run into the ground...play him more HES BETTER THAN FORTE jmho
Powell has made a strong case for the starting job but that does not mean that keeping Forte and rotating both guys is a bad idea. Powell has an injury history and both players can go at a high level if we build our line and offense to pound the rock.
That level of housecleaning is completely out of character for the Jets as we know them. Mo's contract and Sheldon's 'tude will make it extremely hard to trade either of them.
Sometimes just getting younger and more importantly cheaper is worth more than value received in a trade.
I agree with the idea that Powell should be starting next year. One can easily argue that he was the best player on the Jets this season. Pair him up with a bruiser type back and they will be good.
