There were 2 that were undrafted from LTs although that was it for late round picks for LTs, however there was 1 undrafted QB and 4 late round picked QBs
Now that he is up to 312 the pick has to be very high now, if it wasn't already for the Jets to take him. That size just jumps out to me, finally someone who isn't 295 or 302! Someone with size!
I agree w/ you about the need for some size up front. But it wasnt a personell issue but rather a CS decision. Marrone wanted his linemen below 310 lbs when he took over. Before he was there Fabini was around 315 and Mawae was at around 305. Now that he's gone and we're starting a new up front we should see much more strength and mass.
I went a step further by breaking down all starting LTs and QBs in the league and QBs 15 1st Round 3 2nd Round 1 3rd Round 2 4th Round 1 5th Round 4 6th Round 1 7th Round 1 8th Round 1 9th Round 3 Undrafted LTs 17 1st Round 5 2nd Round 6 3rd Round 1 4th Round 0 5th Round 0 6th Round 1 7th Round 2 Undrafted And 5 of those QBs in the first round aren't good at all I think this myth of everyone can get an LT anywhere in the draft has gone far enough, because from this we may as well do that with QBs because it has shown way more starters in the league at QB from the 2nd day of the draft then LTs.
I think you misunderstood my initial question. I asked of those picks for QB, how many were high first rounders, and of those for LT, how many were high first rounders? I have the feeling that generally QBs go early in the draft, and LTs for the most part probably later in the first round. Also, you mention QBs weren't good, but were all the LTs good? You also mention QBs being starters in the league, but you need to do the same for LTs as well in order for the comparison to be valid. I really don't understand what those stats are supposed to prove, outside of QBs being taken in virtually every round. I strongly doubt that all those late round QBs are taken with the intention to be used as starters in the league. I assume that those LTs for the most part are being taken as starters though, because I think usually you'll carry 2 LTs at most, whereas you'll carry 3 QBs usually. It would make sense that you'd want to take more QBs overall as a result, and that you'd purposely want a few that you don't expect to be starter talent as a result. I don't know who has been saying we can get an LT anywhere in the draft, I think most of us want a few day 1 O-line picks, just not with our top 5 pick. Atleast, that is where I stand on the issue. The QB makes more of an impact imo (obviously I know there is disagreement with that) and is more difficult to get, so you have to use your top pick for that. Even though I still have questions as to the impact of the players picked, we can still look at the numbers you give to show that QBs in rounds 2 and 3 are picked 4 total times, whereas LTs are picked a whopping 11 times. This leads me to believe that the drop-off in talent for QB between Round 1 and 2 is substantial, but for LTs there is a drop, but it is nowhere near as significant since many LTs are still selected. And, the biggest reason why most on this site don't want D'Brick, we already have an LT in Jones that will continue to improve. Our biggest need is RT, so taking D'Brick still does not address a major need. We'd also miss out on a QB, and our chances of getting one in the 2nd and 3rd rounds drops considerably, whereas getting an LT does not. We'd also still have to fill our biggest need. In essence, we just wasted a pick. If we had a QB, or if I felt the available QB at #4 really couldn't get it done, I'd be all for D'Brick, but I don't feel that way, so I'd be against the pick. Edit-My apologies on the comment about checking who are starters, since you wrote that those were all starters. I'm going to leave it in there because I made that mistake, but ignore that. I still want to know whether you consider all the LTs good, because you mention the 5 QBs not being good. Aside from that, good job and this should lead to good discussion.
Well even if I didn't make the comment that the 5 starters are good, I already made my point, while it is true that they weren't planned to be starters when drafted, they are, and most were successful, on your question earlier it was pretty split both ways on where both QBs and LTs are drafted, while some of the playoff QBs were in the top of the first round about the same number of LTs were in the top of the first round also, but when it came to the ones drafted late only 2 undrafted LTs can be considered late picks, however there were 4 late day picks for QBs. Actually I am in favor of trading down
I would love to know where you come up w/ the comparrisons between Cutler and Losman beyond them both coming from small schools.
Kiper=Dumbass i just cant stand him i really dont think hes all that knollegable on the draft and i cant look at him with his stupid ass hair.
Interesting. If Brick gets past Titans we may wanna make that move. Than we might get lucky and see either Young or Cutler make it to 8...in which case, we've commited grand larceny.
A conversation with Jay Cutler - Part I Premium Story Jay Cutler By Dan Leberfeld Date: Feb 24, 2006 Q)Jay, what did you do to get ready for the combine? Cutler: I was down in Orlando before the Senior Bowl getting ready with Tom Shaw and some guys and after the Senior Bowl went back to Nashville and trained with our strength staff. Q)Why are you working out at the combine when other quarterbacks aren't? Cutler: I wanted to do everything going into it. I asked a lot of questions at the Senior Bowl as to what the scouts thought, what the coaches thought, and everyone said you can't really hurt yourself, go out there and throw and do the best you can. So I am going to go out there and compete. I wish everyone was competing with me, but that's how it goes. Q)Does that show your competitive nature? Cutler: Yeah. You come here to show what you have. All the coaches are here, all the GMs, everyone is here. Q)How do you explain your metoric rise up the draft boards? Cutler: We got some wins, I think that started it all. We won some fourth quarter games. I think people wanted to see if I could lead a team to victory. Once that started, the ball started rolling and it just kind of picked up pace throughout the year. I went to the Senior Bowl and did well and hopefully on Sunday I will perform well again. Q)Do you think the NFL prefers mobile quarterbacks or pocket guys? Cutler: I think they want pocket guys that can move a little bit. I don't think they are really looking for guys that can get out of the pocket quickly and run around. I mean you are not going to make a living running around in the NFL. There have been some quarterbacks in the past that have tried to do it, and you are only going to get yourself hurt. Being able to escape from the pocket and get rid of the ball quickly, I think that is one of the things they are looking for though. Q)What was your style in college? Cutler: A little bit of both. I ran some option the first two years and these last few years we passed a lot more. I was escaping some pressure and getting yards. It was a mixture. Q)Do you plan on being in New York draft day? Cutler: If I get invited. Q)What did the win over Tennessee do for you stock and open some eyes? Cutler: I think I opened some eyes before that. I think that really made everyone see what I could do on the field. For me personally, it gave me a lot of confidence ending the season. Q)Have you heard all the talk that the Jets like you? Cutler: I haven't talked to them. People are talking about the Jets, Miami, so you never know exactly where you're going to go. Code: Just gonnna hide this in here
I actually had a dream that the bills did that thats so crazy. That they traded with the titans and drafted D'brick right ahead of the Jets. NOOOO
Ferguson: I was 6-6, 312. Q)Can you tell us the history behind your first name? Ferguson: D?Brickashaw comes from the movie ? ?The Thornbirds.? It was a miniseries in 1983 with Richard Chamberlain. It dealt with a priest and some of the issues he had with his religious relationship as well as his love relationship. The whole miniseries dealt with the interplay between the two. It was my dad?s favorite movie. Q)So where did the name come from? Ferguson: It was Cardinal D?Brickasaw, and my name was changed slightly to D?Brickashaw. Q)Talk about yourself as a prospect? Ferguson: I had great coaching at Virginia from Ron Prince and Al Groh. I?m technique oriented and always work on my fundamentals. I just try to work my hardest and do the things that come natural. Q)You are a very poised, articulate man in this setting. What are you like on the field? Ferguson: I?m a beast. I see myself as a bodyguard. I feel I?m personally responsible for the health and welfare of my quarterback, and I will do anything in my means to protect him. Q)What do you need to improve on? Ferguson: When I analyze my game, I see flaws in many different areas. I want to improve on my fundamentals whether it be in passing or run blocking, against the bull rush, against inside moves. My overall game can definitely use improvement. Q)You put on 30 pounds between your sophomore and junior year. How did you do it? Ferguson: Ensure (he laughs). I tried to pay more attention to the things I was consuming. Q)What did you weigh before the gain, and why did you think you needed to bulk up? Ferguson: I was 250-260. At 260 pounds, you really aren?t able to exert yourself on defenders as you could at 290 pounds. I feel I had an advantage at the added weight and size and I don?t think it effected my mobility negatively. Q)Are there any players you patterned your game after growing up? Ferguson: Definitely ? Lomas Brown. He is a long and skinny individual like myself. I try to emulate some of the things he does. Q)Why aren?t you working out at the combine? Ferguson: My Pro Day is March 21. I wanted to give myself the best opportunity to be prepared. I wanted to put in the time to be able to put forth my best effort ? whether it?s working out or running. I?m working out currently in Orlando with Tom Shaw. I?m making good progress, and I don?t want to shortchange myself. I won?t do anything here. I will do everything at my Pro Day. Q)Is playing in New York something you would want to do? Ferguson: Definitely. Going back home is something every kid dreams of. Q)Have you grown since the Senior Bowl where you measured in at 6-5 and change? Ferguson: When I weighed in at the Senior Bowl, I was 6-5 ?, and when I was measured today I was 6-6. I might have grown. Code: Couldnt leave you d brick fans hanging
Both did a hot nothing in college Both are labeled "Brett Favre" type players and want to win(this means all the other QBs in the NCAA and NFL dont want to win and thats what sets them apart<sarcasm>) Both goy hyped into the 1st round Both have done nothing impressive
Except that Losman jumped into the 1st round area about a week before the actual draft, while Cutler has been mentioned as a 1st rounder since December. I never once heard Losman compared to Brett Favre and even if he was...alot of young QB's are. It's no different than when young RB's are compared to Tomlinson or DT's w/ Warren Sapp. That's no reason to clump players together. This shouldnt even be an issue since grouping past prospects w/ current one's eventual success is ridiculous but for argument's sake I will compare Cutler to Losman. Losman and Cutler are not very similar. Losman is a guy who likes to use his legs and make throws on the run. He's not a scrambler by any means but he loves to escape the pocket and make things happen. He has a quick release and decent arm strength but he isnt in Cutler's realm in terms of a deep ball. Also, one of Losman's biggest ?'s when he came out was his leadership ability. He was said to have a bit of an attitude problem when he came out. On the other hand, Cutler likes to stay in the pocket but has the mobility to escape if need be. He has an extremely quick release and a top notch deep ball. He doesnt have quite the touch that losman does, but it isn't a world of difference. Cutler's biggest question mark is mechanics. He needs polishing on his footwork and pocket presence. And in terms of his leadershiop abilities, unlike Losman, Teammate's and coaches alike, rave about his ability to lead a team w/ toughness and poise. He is said to be a hard worker and has a great attitude. So a complete outline of the 2 players when they came out: Losman: Strengths: Mobility, Accuracy/touch,Mechanics, Upside Weaknesses: Decision making, Attitude, top arm strength Cutler: Strengths: Throwing release, Top arm strength, Leadership Weaknesses: Mechanics, Decision making.. So I'm not exactly where you're getting this comparrison. If you dont want Cutler, that's fine. But this inference you're making isnt fair to either player and i quite off base.
