Progress is progress. Nobody is saying he's Mark Gastineau but he's at least showing up on the field for a change. The more he does that the better he'll get. Rex need to set up another fight for him this week.

Vernon works hard and is a good team player. He has been steadily improving. He had a good game. Good for him. Its hilarious that some here are seemingly pissed off that he is playing better. I do not understand the fixation that some have on trashing Gholston. Makes no sense to me. He's a Jet, and is still a young player who is working hard to improve himself. He was asked to play out of position for a season or two and he is now in his natural position with excellent coaching - and he is responding and improving as I anticipated that he would. Why some still feel compelled to attack the guy is simply bizarre and indicates that some of you just don't understand football very well and don't understand what the DE's main job is in the Ryan 3-4 D.

Thank goodness Rex had alot more faith in Vernon than some of the so called experts here have had w/him.

    Good Game Vernon !!!

Please do tell us why anybody should have had faith in him around here? Was it is 0 sacks in two years? Maybe it was his 17 tackles in the same time all while collect a 50 million dollar contract? That must be it.

Oh, and until you see him on the opening day roster don't count on Rex's faith just yet.

Vernon Gholston fucking sucks. He hardly can make plays against 2-3rd stringers. Guy is the ultimate bitch.

Does anybody remember when Vernon got his sack? I DVR'd the game but didn't see it, as I was only half paying attention to the 2nd half.

He played well against the starters too. He had a great stop for a loss (about 3 yards) against the starters. He occupied one or two blockers the whole game. He did extremely well. Give him credit

Ah thank you. I misread the stat line in the OP and thought the assisted tackle was a sack. My bad.

"I ain't scared of no fight."

.Vernon Gholston not offended by staged donnybrook: "I ain't scared of no fight." »
    By Manish Mehta

CHARLOTTE, NC - Vernon Gholston maintained that he wasn’t offended by being set him up to fight a couple weeks ago in Cortland. Rex Ryan and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine recently asked offensive lineman Rob Turner to pick a fight in practice with Gholston to light a fire under him. HBO cameras captured their plan on last week’s episode of Hard Knocks. Gholston said he didn’t know about the scheme until he watched the show.

“Fighting? We can do that if necessary,” the former first-round pick said after the Jets 9-3 win over the Panthers last night. “But my job is always to try to become a better football player and try to help this team win…. They saw how I responded. I ain’t scared of no fight.”

Gholston, who is still looking for his first career sack, said the coaches’ ploy was “totally unexpected.”

“I don’t think it’s anything serious,” he said. “I think it’s more so they’re sitting back and they had nothing else to do.”

Gholston has shown encouraging signs in his transition from outside linebacker to defensive end in the Jets’ 3-4 base scheme. He had a team-high four tackles last night.

The former Ohio State standout also confirmed what Ryan revealed on Hard Knocks about his restructured contract. Gholston and his agent approached the Jets to restructure his five-year rookie deal (that included $21 million in guarantees). Although Ryan said on the show that Gholston took a “pay cut,” that isn’t entirely accurate.

Gholston's base salary in 2010 actually increased from $1.9 million to $2.25 million. He also received an additional $4.25 million (signing bonus + workout bonus). Although the Jets will have to fork over $6.5 million this season, the appealing part of the re-worked deal for the team kicks in in 2011 when Gholston’s base salary drops to $550,000. At that point, the Jets can cut ties with the former first-rounder before paying out an additional $2.5 million roster bonus in March 2011. Gholston could conceivably earn $9 million in incentives in 2011. His base salary for 2012 is $650,000.

Gholston said that his decision to restructure his contract was linked to his perception of playing time this season.

“I just thought it was a good thing to do… with the hope of it giving me a better chance of more playing time,” Gholston said. “At the same time, it’s all about winning a Super Bowl, really.”

Gholston said his agent initially approached him about the possibility of re-working his contract.

“He said, ‘With this year coming up, is there anything specifically that you want done?’” Gholston said. “If the possibility of restructuring the deal would give us a better chance… better leverage for me to play more, I’d be up for it.”

“It’s all set up for me this year to get in there and play,” he added. “The future will (be) determined (by) how well I do this year.”

Ryan, who has praised Gholston for a solid training camp, was pleased with his performance last night. With defensive end Ropati Pitoitua (Achilles tendon) now out for the season, Gholston's value in the defensive end rotation becomes that much more important.

“I thought he did a lot of good things,” Ryan said. “It’s been what we’ve been seeing. So, no surprise.”

Gholston admitted that he’s becoming more comfortable in Ryan’s system as well.

“I don’t remember any glaring mistakes I made,” Gholston said of his play last night. “For the most part, I did well. It’s all about trying to get better…. The biggest thing is trying to have a bigger impact… getting in on the pass rush more. Getting to the quarterback obviously, that’s a big deal. Just getting in there and flying around and make plays.”

    this thread is hot garbage.

To blow a load in your pants because Veronica got a few tackles against a bunch of back ups is plain stupid. Save your load for something else.

    Bah!

Here's my position on Vernon Gholston: I'm done.

If he never plays another game for the Jets, I won't care. If he ever plays another adequate game for the Jets, I won't care. If he ever plays another spectacular game for the Jets, I'll roll my eyes and consider that it's an anomaly; like when pilots see something they just can't explain. If he ever plays well on a consistent basis, I'll chalk it up to someone in the Jets being smart enough to start spiking his pre-game pasta with HGH. That, or black magic.

Bottom line = this was his best game in a Jet uniform, and that's the truth.

The haters are so sad. rooting against Jets players and trashing guys who are out there giving 100% and who are improving. The guy plays a good game and some of the resident morons here still think its necessary to trash him. The haters suck alot more than vernon does.

quit making excuses for Gholston....you sound like a bigger retard everytime you stick up for his shoddy play. These people aren't haters....they just have higher expectations for a player who cashed in a check given to a 6th overall pick.......heaven forbid if fans are a little miffed at Gholston's slow progression.

showing up against 2nd/3rd stringers isn't exactly cause for celebration yet either.

you must be the biggest retard on here. the guy played a good game last night and retards like you are still fixated like fucking morons on "shoddy play". Nobody is celebrating jackass. just discussing the fact that the guy who the haters love to attack is playing better and steadily improving. Who gives a shit if he was the 6th pick? Thats not his fault you idiot. He has every right to be drafted and cash paychecks. he works hard and has been steadily improving. None other than the Head Coach has made this point. Then last night the guy has a good game and the SFB haters on here decide to keep trashing him. If you don't like being called out for being a dumbass hater - then don't trash players who just played a good game.

    Its pretty fucking simple actually.
