Wrong. If we had peyton teams would give our receivers more cushion to prevent the long ball. has anyone forgotten how fast our receivers are? LB would be forced to play 10 yrd curl to flats and not be 2-3 yrds of line of scrimmage. taking 2 yr drops to play the infamous 5 yrd quick slants. Thus taking so much pressure of the o-line and opening up the running lanes. When you hear most coaches talk about establishing the run game is because they have qb's that are viable threats. And, it's pathetic that some fans believe because NE's picked to go to the SB again we should accept losing. This is the NFL.
Here's my line of thinking: I hate that our offense is limited - and will always be - by an inability to stretch the field. That we may occasionally hit something long doesn't change the fact that teams will give that up every day of the week, in exchange for a focus underneath. Having said that, Chad this morning sits second in passer rating, a statistic which has never impressed me, but which does show efficiency. Can Kellen Clemens step in and be as efficient? He can certainly open up the field a little more, but I think the trade-off is that he will bring with him more mistakes and turnovers. I'm not so sure I've convinced myself very well, but for now, I think I'd like to rely on Chad's win-loss record as an indicator of his ability to lead this team. I'm all about keeping it simple right now - Chad wins more than he loses; and the Jets win more than they lose with him at the position. As a last point, I wouldn't rush to start the Kellen Clemens era if for no other reason than because Chad's injury history tells us that we're likely to be saved the trouble of a difficult decision. Maybe even this week. I think I'd let Chad's health determine who plays quarterback, and open the competition next year.
I don;t even want to hear the "Chad can't throw the deep ball shit ". Nobody could with that Oline play.
A deep passing game requires that the o-line give the qb and the receivers enough time to get deep. Did you see our o-line do that at all yesterday? Any time you see a QB with time to throw your beloved 50-yard strike, look at the o-line. They will be giving that QB a pocket to throw out of and time to find the open receiver down the field. We don't have that kind of O-line this year. Doesn't matter who is under center for the Jets this year, we will not have a deep passing game unless the o-line starts giving him time to throw.
Let me ask this then - If Clemens is that bad, WHY IS HE ON THE TEAM? WHY ARE WE PAYING HIM, AND WHY DON'T WE HAVE A YOUNG QB WHO CAN DO THE JOB? We know what Chad can do and what his limitations are, and that physically he doesn't have long left in the league (especially with this O line). If this team is "rebuilding" (yet again) and if Mangini and Tannenbaum have some "plan" (as everyone claims but I don't see), shouldn't the QB that is the supposed future be playing and growing with the team? And if Clemens isn't that guy, why is he here? This has nothing to do with liking Chad or his heart or anything, it has to do with what the "braintrust" (and right now it looks like anything but) is doing. And it doesn't look good.
Alot of truth in that. You get the feeling when they play NE that Belichick knows that over the long haul of the game, that Chad can't beat him.
I want to thank the old timers who read all of my thread starter and commented fairly. Maybe the timing is bad, but it is what it is and so are the Jets...a team limited in offense by their quarterback's physical limitations - and that negatively impacts everything else the Jets can and cannot do. I agree 100% Tony - and Serby said it in his article today - Jet fans who cheered when Pennington went down do not have a leg to stand on...given everything that Chad has given to this franchise. However, that doesn't change what is... As #28Martin said in the previous post - you can sense that over the long haul a well coached team knows that Pennington cannot beat their team with his arm. Therefore, they defense the Jets differently than other teams - including putting more pressure on the Jets upfront. That has a direct effect on the performance of the offensive line - especially when you are playing against a good defensive line (and the Patriots have a great defensive line!). What that means is, against good teams, they will stack the Jets and prevent the run, and challenge the Jets to pass deep - and eventually sack Pennington if not intercept him. It's a direct result, not inconsequential...sorry...but that's reality. What does that do to our defense? It puts more pressure on them to hold the opponent longer, because the Jets cannot keep making first downs on dinks and dunks and control the clock. Is the Jet defense really that bad? No, I don't think so. They played a great offensive team with a HOF QB and WR and other excellent weapons at WR, TE and RB. The Patriots and Brady put pressure on the Jet defense - and without an offense to bail them out, the Jet D was shredded. It goes back to the whole team concepts...if you can't run and pass and pass deep, it negatively impacts your offense and defense and lines and everything else. Again, if you read my thread starter, I LOVE Chad Pennington, never said he sucks, respect what he's done with what he had - and hope he coaches our QB's if he doesn't become Offensive Coordinator some day. That said, if we don't turn it over to Clemens to see what we have, the Jets are stunting the growth of the team - and they will not get to the next level - Super Bowl contenders - in 2008. The Jets need to see if Clemens can lead them to the Superbowl - even as we fix other issues on the OLine and the Defense...if we ever want to win the big game. gg
I agree with alot of what this man said. How bad was it that the rush didn't get to Brady and when the blitz was looking like it might get there, he could just sling the ball to a receiver out side. The Line isn't great but Chads arm does not help them at all either........ it's a two way street you know.
Thanks ANJI - Hey Jet fans - how often did Dan Marino get sacked? Was it a great Oline or his quick release and incredible arm? Could you blitz him? Did you need to drop back more guys in coverage? Brady, Peyton Manning, etc. - could they win a Super Bowl with the current Jets' team? I don't know, but they could get the Jets close if not the prize - because of their ability to throw the football - they make their teams' better. (I can hear you all now) I'm NOT saying Clemens is the next Marino or Brady or Manning - I'm not sure what he is or can be at this stage. But I do know one thing - if we don't find out then we'll go into 2008 with a shaky QB situation and no solution. Does that make any sense?
It makes a ton of sense, and it raises the question as to what Mangini and Tannenbaum see and what exactly they are doing. I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, but the Kendall thing really raised my eyebrows, and the team's performance yesterday starts the doubts flowing, and rightly so.
hey everyone, I understand the doubt - I have my own. However, I do think Mangini earned our support by his work last year - and until I see more that doesn't make sense, I'm behind him. However, at some point he will need to pull the trigger on Chad and Kellen. This will be a long lasting decision and one of the tougher ones he'll make as Jet HC. I'll be watching closely, and waiting and wondering and questioning until I see the results.
This question is very simple to answer. NO, there is not a QB in the game today or in history that could win a SB with this D.
Putting Clemens behind this OLine is the equivalent of turning him into David Carr. I wouldn't turn the reigns over just yet GG. Not because I have faith in Shad, who is fishbait behind this OLine. It's wiser to preserve Clemens until a better OLine somehow gets built thru the draft. Maybe by some miracle, Tannenbaum spends the money and brings in a QUALITY FA OLinesman instead of what we have now. Who knows... We all got a glimpse of what awaits any QB behind this OLine this season. They suck period. You're right that it doesn't help that defenses take away the short to medium range stuff, but this OLine is lacking in fundamentals so badly that no QB is safe. Stronger arm or not, without a decent OLine, any QB brave enough to take snaps on this team is nothing but the perverbial sacrificial lamb. Save Clemens until we can protect him.
Cman, that may be why Mangini is waiting too - he wants the oline to come together better. I can see Bender getting in at LG - but against New England and Baltimore, maybe he's waiting for the reason(s) you mentioned...not only for Clemens but for Bender.
