The single biggest fix will be to cut Robertson and either draft or aquire a defensive tackle 6'3" 310 pounds or above. We dont seem to have many of those guys for some reason. IMO Shaun Ellis has to stay while Kimo is likely to retire/be barely of a threat next year due to age. I dont understand why some people believe Ellis will be cut without even thinking about Kimo. Give Ellis another year, he lost Abraham and has to adjust to the 3-4. Ellis is at the age where he is not going to pick new things up very quickly. But 30 years old definelty beats Kimo, who is 35? Anyway Bryan Thomas has improved greatly, I doubt he will ask for that much money since I don't see another teams offering him anything better. The secondary is okay and shouldnt be dealt with this offseason unless something amazing comes up. As for the offense, I think Washington/Houston is a great 1-2 and Pennington should give way to Clemens at some point who is getting valueable sideline experience. The offensive line needs to improve but is very young. I think if they got a solid run blocking guard to fill Moore's void then they should be all set. To sum it all up in one sentence, getting a NT and a RG IMO are absolutely necessary and should be first priority for the Jets in the offseason.
Assuming we're looking at a middle first-round pick (12-18), I'd use it on a stud NT if one is available. I would cut Robertson and retain R. Moore.
By the way, does Ellis have any trade value at this point? I would trade him for a 2nd round pick if possible. I just don't believe we can justify tying up this kind of money for a marginal DE who is almost 30. I'd rather draft a kid with potential and let him earn his keep.
Eric Barton is a mess at the ILB in a 3 - 4 defense. Just go back to the Colts game where seemingly every run was to his side. He can not play off a block to save his life. The #1 rule for an ILB in a 3 - 4 is too take the OUTSIDE shoulder of the OL trying to block you. He does not do that at all. He has been a HUGE reason as to why our run support up the middle has been so poor. Sure he could use a 310 lb. stud in front of him but that is no reason for his poor technique. It was so poor against the Browns tha the was pulled for Chatham.... Victor Hobson - See Barton comments Thomas - Has done nothing special but has been solid..but the OLB in a 3 -4 defense should be a pass rushing force. So I say we need to go LB. Poslusny (Penn St) should be there in the middle of round 1 and the kid from Michigan (name escapes me and I'm at work so I do not have time to look up) would be big upgrades. The Michigan kid could be a reach for us though in regards to an immediate imact player as we do not have as big a D Line as they do at Michigan. (That is a sad statement.)
Lamar Woodley. if we somehow got a big NT or a dominant DE, along with Woodley, I think you'd see major differences in our D -- both pass-rushing and run-stopping. Woodley absolutley wreaks havoc in the backfield, especially on QB's. he's definitely an upgrade over Thomas. having said that, i'd resign Thomas as long as we don't overpay him; if someone wants to outbid us, then they can have him. as for Robertson, I'm not sure if cutting him will hurt our cap more than help it. maybe Jetsin2004 can shed some light on that situation. as of right now, there aren't many college NT's who stand out (this may change by draft time); but any combination of Woodley and a DE/NT would be awesome additions to the D. then in R2, pick up a RT because Clement is old and almost useless, and i believe Moore can still develop into a consistent starter with studs around him (i.e. Ferguson, Mangold, stud RT). you don't need pro-bowlers along the entire OL. cheers
LOLB Woodley NT Branch RE: Carriker this will solve everything branch and carriker will go in the second round and i think we have two second rounders so take Woodley in the 1st round and branch and carriker in the second and that will solve everything
Barton played very well against Cleveland. He led the team in tackles, had a sack, and was the only linebacker making a difference that day. I have no idea what you are talking about. Vilma is the one who has been invisible out there.
Most of which came in the 2nd half when we changed our D philospohy and got up after the QB. His leading the team in tackles in a bogus stat when you give up 140+ yards of rushing a game. With that many yards your LB's are making tackles 5+ yards down field consistently.....that is poor run Defense. How about getting up in the holes, closing the gaps and taking on and then shedding a block. I see Vilma do that a lot more than Barton - the Lions game excluded. And I will agree that Vilma is not haivng a good year. As a matter off fact no one in out front 7 is having a good year. It just really upsets me to watch Barton and Hobson continuely screw up their technique when it coomes to working off blocks.... One more thing, how many times have we seen our OLB's sealed off by the TE and WR this year leaving the off tackle holes open for the RB's to explode through. Admittedly some are good plays by the TE or WR, but your a LB, take the OUTSIDE shoulder of your blocker, shed the block, flow the RB back into the middle of the field and wrap up when out tackle. I think I can count the # of times that has happended at the LOS this year. BIg deal if it happs 5 or 6 yards down field.
