Take it to the bank. TB and Tenn need QBs. JW and MM go 1 and 2 in that order. Every team thinks the same. If you need a qb, you take one until you find one. And with new rookie wages, it doesn't cost that much. We needed to lose that Tenn game
Even if they lost to Tenn. they both would have had 3-13 records and Tenn. would have had the tie breaker on strength of schedule. As far as taking it to the bank, I would give it about a 50% chance they stick with Mettenberger for another year. He didn't light things up but had a decent showing for what that offense had to work with. Both QB's at the top of the draft would present more questions than what they currently have and the could get a big piece of rebuilding their D with Leonard Williams.
So much FAIL in this thread. Ya'll deserve scrubs like Sanchez and Geno. We'd be LUCKY AS HELL to get Mariota at 6, too bad he's going to go 1/2. You have to be on crack if you thought he didn't play well. PFF had it right. The comparisons to Kaepernick are lazy and need to stop. Kaep is dumb, really dumb and throws the ball 90mph on every throw. That is not Mariota.
I can't speak for everyone, but the reason I don't want Mariota isn't because of how he played the other night. In fact he had a great game for someone who was missing one of his receivers. The Oregon defense couldn't stop Zeke Elliot, that isn't Mariota's fault. The reason I don't want him is because he is a system QB. He comes from a school that has a poor track record of pro QB's and never taking any snaps under center scares me. I think he is in for a rude awakening in the pros if he goes to the wrong team. If the Eagles trade up for him, he'll be fine. As for us, I'm not so certain. I think he will be gone before our pick anyhoo. If I had to pick, I would take Winston but I don't think a new GM and first time HC gamble on him. We are in a real bind at the QB position.
ESPN is unwatchable. I swear I wish that snake Mel Kiper and Todd McShay would get hit by the same bus. Nobody cares that Jameis throws dozens of interceptions all season, didnt show up for any first, or fumbles backward over his head, but Mariota has the lowest INT ratio ever and it's because he doesn't make NFL throws? Get the fuck outta here. Biased clowns. I'll give you a system QB; Mel Kiper is a system analyst. The guy literally thinks he's god
I like both guys. You say that Oregon has a poor track record of pro qb's, but so does FSU. How many successful pro qb's has FSU produced? Running a "pro style" offense against college defenses is nothing close to what he'll be seeing in the NFL and 75% of qb's in the NFL play in a system…that show off their strengths and hides their weaknesses. I get that people are weary of Mariota because spread guys like Newton, RG3, Kaep are still struggling in the pocket/reading nfl defenses but if i'm being honest, Mariota is a lot smarter than those guys and has the tools/intangibles they lack.
The funny thing about it is that pretty much every school everywhere has a "poor track record for QBs". People love to point to that, but in recent years, point to a real Quarterback U for me. I can't think of two starting QBs right now who went to the same school, so it's just flawed logic that people throw out. You only get 32 starting QBs and most of them are holdovers from the previous years, so yeah, most QBs don't pan out you could say. I'd say that every school has a poor track record for pro QBs.
you know Geno Smith had a great track record of not throwing interceptions in college too. Winston is the best prospect QB prospect, there is a lot to like about Winston. He's not the greatest prospect obviously - but in this weak QB draft - he's the cream of the crop.
I think the kid is on a one-way ticket to Philly personally. I can't explain it, but I think Chipper is going to move heaven and earth to move up and get Mariota should he make it past Tenn. This kid is the missing variable to the equation he's created in Philly, plus now he's got all the power (short of Jeffrey Lurie) to make it happen. But if...IF...this kid is still sitting there at the 6th pick, it'd be idiotic to pass on him imho.
On their mock draft right now in January NFL.com http://www.nfl.com/draft/2015/mock-drafts/daniel-jeremiah/215603 ( Daniel Jeremiah) has Mariotta going to the Jets at 6. Jameis goes first to the Bucs. I would take that right now!
A lot smarter? So how do you determine he is a lot smarter than those guys?? (let me guess, his skin color?)
They say that Jameis reminds everyone of Big Ben. Because of his size. But does he have that kind of strength and escapability. The Ohio State kid, Jones actually has the kind of strength. As for escapability, that I'm not sure about.
Remember when McShay had a hard on for Gabbert and said he was going to be the most successful qb from his class? Don't be ignorant. You do realize that Mariota is a minority too, right?
Don't be ignorant? Who is being ignorant by thinking that saying since Mariota is a minority too that your comment suddenly became justified? So since he is a minority that means your assumption that those black QBs not being as smart as Mariota is now ok? lol And you didn't answer the question....
He's smarter than they are because his decision making and how he processes information is what sets him apart from them.
