Yeah it's something he can def work on, but we have to work on his ability to operate in the pocket, as well as get him adjusted to a pro-style offense. Just a lot to overcome. I'm more interested in QBs that can already operate in the pocket. That's why Mariota isn't the best QB in this draft. We are sitting here, talking about Andrew Luck but let's be serious - Mariota belongs in discussion with Bridgewater. Not in terms of where they got drafted but you get my point. Go back and look at the times Oregon got to the RZ and failed to get 7. The tight windows - he can't consistently make those throws like Winston, the ability to operate in the pocket. Winston is on a completely different level. Mariota has a lot to overcome, I listed the reasons up top - now I won't be mad if we get him. I won't be pissed off like when we got Geno Smith - I know Mariota is 10x better. He needs the Aaron Rodgers treatment, the issue is we don't have a HOF QB to play with until the guy is ready. Jets will surely need to do their HWK.
He's not even worth being in the same discussion - I don't get why people want to compare the 2. Even so, Winston is the best QB prospect since Luck. Not Mariota.
With Gailey being our new Offensive Coordinator, does a potential Mariota pick still bother some of you
It depends on whether he has to set foot on an NFL field next year. If so, then yes I'm not particularly thrilled by taking an option QB no matter how good and trying to develop him on the fly. If the Jets can have him spend the year learning the new offense and getting acclimated to the NFL then the chances of success are much higher. Geno Smith is no better placeholder for a potential Mariota pick than Sanchez was for Geno. An early failure by the offense will get Geno benched and then the plan goes awry.
I think Geno will be moved honestly. Say we draft Mariota and bring back Vick/sign another veteran and from the start make it aware the veteran will start the year and Mariota will develop and adapt to the NFL style. Vick/Mariota are similar players in a sense that their running ability forces defenses to play them a certain way so Marcus will get a good look at how teams are going to play him due to his running ability. We hire the right QB coach and bring in another vet as well to help Mariota in the QB room. We also make sure the O-Line is the top priority for the young QB unlike when we let our OL go to shit in Sanchez's 3rd year. That sound better?
Why would we move him? That makes no sense. Who would take him? You dont trade a person because he plays bad, you cut him if hes a problem (financial or otherwise). You keep him if hes got a low number. Geno has a low number, hes not going anywhere and rightfully so. I really dont know who everyone thinks is out there that's so much better than him thats available. Not that saying Geno is good at all, but whats the alternative? Vick needs to go, hes just terrible. Theres no point in keeping an overprice veteran who can contributre. A tandem of Mariota and Vick would be horrible. Theyll take a run at a vet like Bradford they can hopefullybget for cheap and probably draft a qb.
I said moved, not traded or cut, just think he'll be gone We dont know who a better option is until we actually let someone else play, draft a QB, sign another Vick yes is terrible but he'd give Mariota, for example, a look at how the defenses he'll eventually place will play him. Actually he'll be better learning from a vet out there then sitting behind Geno. St. Louis is supposedly keeping Bradford at a reduced price, so I doubt we even have a chance.
You want a bad qb situation Mariota and Vick would be worse than Geno Vick. But youre right, who the heck do we play?
I'm not saying dont take a chance, but he needs to sit atleast a year or 2. That's why we need someone to hold down the fort.
I wouldn't say a entire year or two maybe play him the last month if we fall out of playoff contention. I wonder who they have in mind at this point.
The New York Jets franchise may have been given the greatest gift in decades. If Mariota is still sitting there at 6 we need to RUN to the dais. If Mariota gets past TB (I could honestly see them taking Winston), we need to move heaven and earth to move up to take Mariota. Nothing else in football matters as much as the QB. Not even close. Nothing. There is no "developing" a 4th rounder, all you're doing is grooming a backup. And anyone looking forward to 2016 are looking for fools gold--2016 is going to be an awful class unless Cardale plays a lot this year, shows a lot and declares. LOL at Cook and Hackenberg. _
yeah wtf is wrong with you people i like jameis more from a football standpoint, but mariota is still a FANTASTIC prospect
Most of the dudes dumping on Mariota have wanted Cooper for months. At 6. When there will be another 4-5 WRs who could be just as good or BETTER later on (and I like Cooper a lot). The fall off from Mariota and Winston to the next best QB is a cliff. And even further to the 2016 QBs. _
