I am the farthest thing from a SOJ on the board--I am such a homer its not even funny. I was defending Vinny and Chad and Mark WAY past what was reasonable for a fan to do. I'm done doing that. My comments assume we are NOT getting Mariota or Winston. My comments are targeted at folks here who would prefer to pass on the QBs and rather "surround Geno with more playmakers" and hope that Gailey can get SOMETHING out of him. To quote another poster--to "make chicken soup out of chicken salad". I cook a LOT. I don't try to do anything with chicken shit. He's a talented thrower and has some chops about him. But he has no football IQ and doesn't look like a leader to me. He's a flawed player that I don't want a genius OC and tons of talent around prop up because ultimately I don't believe he has the whole package to get us to the SB or consistently compete. I don't want Gailey to turn him into the mirage that was Ryan Fitzpatrick. _
Because you cannot win consistently with a stupid player--no matter HOW much talent you put around him and how much an OC can prop him up and hide his flaws. I don't want to win next year. I want to win for the next TEN years. Chan Gailey made Fitzpatrick look like a $60MM QB. Who was cut less than 18 months later and has since bounced around the league as a jag. If that's what you are hoping for, that's fine. I don't want to prop up a flawed player, dumb down the playbook, hide his weaknesses so we can sneak into as a 8-8 or 9-7 wild card and get beaten summarily by better teams. But that's just me. I don't see a 12 or 13 or 14 win QB. That's what I want for this franchise. _
I understand you Stokes. what you are saying make sense. I will not challenge that. I just have a different opinion. The way I see it is if Bowles turns around the D and make us a Top 5 D, all we will need from Offense will be to be average to make the playoffs. I really really missed playoffs.
And you still aren't getting MY point. I don't want to win next year. I want to set up the future of this franchise--the next decade. Creating a Ryan Fitzpatrick mirage about Geno will set the franchise back, not move it forward. Of course Gailey will make Geno look better. Kind of like the bogus last 4 games last year --costing us Teddy or Carr. Like the bogus last game this year. "Hey, maybe the light finally went on for Geno--yeah, let's see if Gailey can get SOMETHING out of him and build around HIM". _
Oh no. I'm disagreeing with your whole argument. Quite clearly. It's okay. That's not a good thing. _
Who said the Fitzpatrick deal was a good thing? If anything, you give credit to Gailey and his system. I want to win football games, you want to tank and lose football games - I don't support your movement. If Geno (or another vet) can be a stop-gap option for the drafted rookie QB for a season - then the best case scenario is that QB plays decent and we can somehow generate some trade value. Make sure you read everything I am putting down especially the bold - you tend to spin things the wrong way and then you start rambling about some other crap. I have already said we need a vet in here because if a rookie QB comes here I don't want him starting. You are going to be one sad puppy if Mariota is gone at #2. One thing I learned about the draft is to not be fixated on 1 particular player.
Which was exactly the essence of your point and what I disagreed with as it relates to Geno. Oh, I fixate on players and I'm eternally disappointed. I've been fixated on Teddy, Carr and Mariota for what seems like 3 years now. And we're not going to get any of them. And I fear we're not going to be very good for the next 5 years. You bet I fixate on players in the draft. _
Because I am coming to terms on the fact that Geno Smith might be our starter again next season. Sure, I don't like it but I want to win games - which seems to be something you are against. Jets have to do their diligence and put the best product on the field nxt yr - to begin this "I want to win for the next 15 yrs" BS you have to start somewhere. Maybe it starts next season. Hopefully Winston / Mariota falls to the Jets and we can groom them. I'm disappointed Teddy and Carr aren't Jets either - you aren't the only one on this board that was a fan of those 2 QBs. Stop acting like you are. Just because we don't get any of those 3 QBs doesn't mean we can't be a good team for the future and beyond. Yes, you are fixated on 1 player in this entire draft. You will be disappointed come April - sucks but that's the draft.
Okay, that's different than what I'm saying. I'm not suggesting we assume Gailey can or should do that. If they think a franchise QB is available for the taking, they should do it and I'm sure they will if they think that.
Of course I want to win games, but not at the expense of future success--of building a foundation. 2015 matters to you. It doesn't to me because I don't think we're close to be a contender. Will I root for wins and be happily surprised if we win? Of course--but I'm not naive. And I'm not tanking games next year to move up in the draft because there is no one there next year worth tanking for. Everything starts with the QB and propping up a flawed player for an extra win or two defeats the foundation of what you're trying to build. And I never said I was the only one who liked Teddy and Carr, there were a ton of guys here that did including you. That's why I'm surprised you're so content coming to terms with Geno being our starter next year. I know he's going to be the starter but i don't have to be happy about it. Nothing I say here is going to change that or get us Mariota/Winston. Doesn't mean I'm not going to talk about it passionately. And I'll be fixated on those two guys until they are off the board and then I'll bring myself to get behind Petty or Hundley or whomever they take. _
I really really hope so. New HC, new GM, new regime, clean slate--hopefully we start with a new franchise QB like 2009--but this time get the right guy. _
I'd be shocked if we don't draft a QB in the first 2 rounds, new GM and a new HC typically like to go with their own guys especially when Geno Smith is your starter if you don't.
Every year matters to me - but you have to start somewhere. We might not win next year, but I hope watching this new regime, we have some hope for the future. I'm very worried about the QB position next season. It seems to me, the chances of grabbing a decent veteran QB are looking smaller by the day. The options are very limited also. Both QBs might be drafted in the first 2 picks. I hope 1 of the 2 QBs are on board, I don't know if Mariota fits what TN is trying to do so maybe they pass on Mariota. I'm still shaky on Mariota, but if we can sit him down - he could be our Rodgers. Winston is going #1 IMO. We might be STUCK with Geno Smith nxt year. I'm not happy about it at all TBH, because I can't stand Geno Smith - but what can ya do.
Well we all agree that whomever it is, we need to sit him for at least a year. i could get behind watching geno for a year if I know one of those two guys is waiting in the wings. I keep trying to convince myself that TB is going to take Winston and that TN loves Mettenberger, but I just can't see TB passing on Mariota. I can't. I really hope Winston has a great combine and pro day. _
Yeah, Whisenhunt likes to run a more vertical passing offense so I don't think Mariota is the right fit for TN personally. This opens up for 1 of the 2 to drop to the Jets. I think Winston goes to the Bucs. Jets more than likely will be in position to grab Mariota, and let him sit and learn Gailey's offense. We would need to root for Geno to succeed because if he gets benched well then you are throwing that rookie QB out there in the fire. That's why I want to win games.
My plan includes getting one of the JAG FA QBs to start or backup Geno. Locker or Austin would be fine. _
