I can forgive the onside kick more than the interceptions....I think because we'd all have been saying how Herm would never have had the balls to make that call etc....but Chad's mistakes really did not have the potential for positive outcomes...he should have taken the one sack and either tried to scramble on the first pick or just plain have looked at Coles...
If you bother to read my posts, I agree that Pennington's play has been subpar and that he is playing for his job the rest of the season. What I don't understand are statements that the Jet defense is not to blame for losses when they consistently give up over 150 yards rushing a game. We all knew the only way the Jets would beat the Bears would be to force Grossman into passing downs and mistakes. That did not happen. The Bears were able to run the ball, especially in the second half. All Grossman had to do to win the game was throw a 5 yard pass that turned into a TD because of a missed tackle. I also do blame Pennington for the loss, but there are other people to blame also. It's just ridiculous to me that every time the Jets lose, its the QBs fault and nobody sees the other warts on this team - no running game, no pass rush, no run defense etc. So my devotion isn't blind, but I am a realist and that means that I know a good football team when I see one and the Jets just aren't a good team yet. To continually blame the QB is, IMO, overly simplistic and a typical knee jerk reaction rather than a well-thought out analysis of the team.
1. I don't understand this "I blame Chad" thing at all. Given he has no running game whatsoever to support him or take the heat off, there was just no way he could single-handedly grab the win for the Jets. If he could, he is not human. 2. I agree to a degree that Chad is to blame - his accuracy at mid-range (10-15 yard) passes are way off. And this was supposed to be his strength, not weakness. 3. With his accuracy off and the running game as inconsistent as it is at the current state, everybody should expect to see "bad" Chad week in and week out. Remember - one player can do only so much. This team is just not good. 4. I am starting to wonder what happened to everyone on this board - there were times when the Jets were projected to go 4-12 or worse. What did you guys say then? I am willing to say I am still happy to see the Jet team the way they are. These days, it's the defense that is stepping up, and once the HC can finally coordinate both the O and D together, you can bet the Jets will have a competitive game any given sunday. 5. Winnable, you say? Hell, Cards had the bears at the ropes, only to bail them out at the waning seconds. This bears team is scary good, and they are very resourceful. I am glad the Jets could compete, and not get blown out like the Giants. 6. This year wasn't supposed to be a playoff-bound year anyway. Keep that in mind. Without Chad playing like he is now (he wasn't even a sure-lock for a starter at the start of the season.) who knows where the team might be? So... relax, and just enjoy the ride. I am very confident that, in 3 years (which is 2 years shorter than the initially-projected 5 years) this team will be competing come post season. Peace.
I think the Defense deserves a little criticsm and they have gotten it from many people on this board. Chad is in control of the game so to speak, his achievements and failures determine what the defense has to do. As of late the defense can?t really be faulted with any loss! The offense has been anemic and there?s nothing that you can put your finger on except Chad Pennington, Not a lot of dropped passes, shit call and non call but nothing you could point at the receivers. In the New England Game Chad also had a couple of over throws, under throws and in hind sight we lucked out with crotches catch in the end zone. The defense has been the bright spot in the mid term. All quarter backs are the leaders of the team, they are the most important piece of the puzzle, when it come to running a scoring offense. There is no one here to blame but Chad. (In terms of our losing troubles lately)
That vaunted Bears defense that you say lets Chad off the hook for not having a good game, it had given up rushing yards 3 games prior to that, and it didn't hold the QBs to as little passing yards as our defense did. It also has given up more points in a lot of their games than our defense did against the Bears. So for you to blame a defense that performed better than the top defenses of the league is ridiculous, rather than putting the blame on someone more deserving. Great defenses simply do not allow zero points and zero yards all year long. That's just an absurd expectation. If we had the Ravens Super Bowl defense you would have blamed them in the Bears game, because they certainly wouldn't have done much better. The fact is, this defense held the Bears to a very small total yardage and point total. They are not in any way blameable for the offense not even rising to the bare minimum of expectations.
We have an overpaid QB who is the 29th ranked QB in terms of efficiency rating in the NFL, who has no arm and is throwing balls up for grabs by the D. Granted we also have an overpaid end that hasn't played great, but the difference is we don't have a DE of the future sitting on the bench like we do at QB. In fact Ellis is playing better than the DE on the other side. As Stat pointed out Denver, who is 7 & 3 is about to put in Cutler to start. Denver is not just a contender for a playoff spot, they are a contender for a SB and Shanahan understands that without significantly better QB play they aren't going to win one this year, next year or the year after. Prior to breaking his leg, there are some experts that believe Clemens was an outright first round pick. He comes from a big time program and apparently, by some reports has a live arm and is smart as can be. I have no idea how good or bad Clemens will turn out, and I'm certainly skeptical of his size to be a prototypical NFL QB but I do know the current QB doesn't have an NFL arm, is no longer accurate or efficient with the ball and is making bad decisions with the ball. Joe Montana was a third round pick. Tom Brady a 6th rounder, maybe we get real lucky and Clemens is the deal. If Shanahan doesn’t believe that Jake Plummer can take a 7 & 3 team to a SB, why should any one in their right mind believe that Pennington can take this Jet team with their crappy overpaid DE, Ellis and their can't stop the run D to a SB? Apparently in order for the Jets to win a SB, we are going to need significantly better play from our QB in order to overcome the other deficiencies on this team. Guess what we drafted a highly rated prospect in the second round. Maybe we should take a look at him? For right now I'm fine with Pennington starting. We have a schedule where mediocre QB play should get us to 10 wins? If we happen to beat Miami and Buffalo along the way we might even be in the hunt for the playoffs with a 5 & 1 division record? We don't need Chad to be great, we need him to run the O, make an occasional play and not chuck the ball up for grabs. Based on his play the last several weeks, including the NE game, I don't believe Chad has the accuracy anymore to not put the ball up for grabs. I hope he proves me wrong, just as I hope Ellis steps up and plays better. To bad in Ellis's case we don't have a replacement on the bench.
winstonbiggs I jsut can;t see how you get that point of view. 2 things: first of all, you say he is throwing balls up for grabs, and secondly you are saying that we get mediocre play out of Chad. Now he has had 2 standoutishly bad games, that's it. Cleveland and Chicago are those games, but in Cleveland the defence didn't show up and we were really outplayed all game. He did throw ONE ball up for grabs against Chicago last Sunday, and yeah it got picked. Last season, Vinny was throwing them up for graps once per quarter. Also, he is not mediocre. I don't think any of the impartial outsiders would call him mediocre, but instead would say that he is in a funk. If he does not snap pout of this for the rest of the season, I still don't think he will be benched because Chad gives us the best chance to win. At the absolute worst, if he bombs for the next 6 games, he'll be fighting for a starting spot again next summer, but at no point can I imagine Mangini saying Chad's no longer the starter...it just does not make sense. His arm isn't even as bad as people say anyways. he can still throw the ball deep, and the only reason his medium passes have not been completed latelt is because he is not throwing accurately, velocity has had nothing to do with it. On Urlachers pick it wasn't a lack of zip that got it picked, it was a bad read. For once, I would say we should be looking at factors other than arm strength to explain Chad's recent struggles. Let's look for him to bounce back against Houston.
I believe our coach has no faith in Clemens at this point. From someone that has no problem benching players, it says alot about how much he's defending Pennington. Maybe Clemens just sucks.
He's arm is worse than people think, it's terrible and now he lacks accuracy. Having zip on a 7 yard pass is something high school kids have. By the way he had 3 horrible games and several mediocre games. Take a look at Chad's QB rating inside the opponents 20 this year, it stinks and that's based on 10 games.
Look, you hold a team to 10 points you should win the game. It's really that simple. Chad Pennington made at least one mistake that took points off the board. That one mistake more then likely changed the complexion of the entire game. We put up 3 there we might not try an onside kick to open the second half. Coleman might never be in that position to slip and give up a TD. It killed the teams momentum and was the turning point in the game. And as far as continually blaming the QB...well......he must be doing something wrong if people can "continually" blame him right? If he came out and threw for 200+ yards and 2 td's with no picks and we lost, then people wouldn't be dogging him. Thats not the case though.
dont be stupid...are running game was awful and pennington only had 1 bad interception the other one was when DBrick got beat by Alex Brown
DBrick didn't really get beat, that was a bad line call, the blame should go to Schotty for a really stupid play. I don't even know what that was supposed to achieve exactly. Leon Washington picked it up though iirc, so Chad really has no excuse on the play. He had 2 INTs, just like he got credit for a TD the week before even though the reciever made the play and it should have been INTed. He also overthrew about 8 times, and underthrew once, so that's another 9 bad decisions. So he had a minimum of 11 bad decisions/bad plays. That is wat too much. The running game is awful because Pennington can't stretch out a defense, and they just play the run. It sure wasn't awful the first quarter when the Bears D got sliced for 60 yards or whatever it was. If you put a decent QB back there, you'd probably start seeing a running game. Chad's limitations are simply too much. He might not usually make the stupid decisions that someone like Jake Plummer usually does, but with his physical limitations the results are about the same. If Plummer, on a 7-4 team, can get benched for a touted rookie, Pennington shouldn't be above that as well. The same people defending Chad the way they are now probably defended Vinny, and will probably defend Clemens, so their opinions mean very little. They'll toe the company line once the time comes.
