Thomas has more potential as a NT, and fits the mold the Jets are looking for a lot better than Cody does. I don't dislike Cody as a prospect, but as a fit for the Jets spelling Kris Jenkins they would likely opt for a similar player. Thomas and Cody have about the same grade, and their slotting will depend on the team that drafts him. As for Jefferson, he's just a developmental corner with return ability. He could go before then, but that's the type of player I'd like to see the Jets bring in. Alualu isn't really as good a fit for a 34 as people make it out to be, he really is more of a small, penetrating tackle in a 43 system. College 34's (as rare as they are) have never been factories for producing NFL 34 players because they aren't set up to be. I think the three headed safety group is solidly in there, and as much as I like Cook moving back there I think they'll be fine with a later round safety. Robert Johnson is a stud in coverage and would be a potential starter after a year learning the system. Jerry to me is one of the real interesting talents on the line, because he really does have the ability to play either guard or tackle. He's like Linval Joseph in a lot of ways, versatility add value. I hate when people don't put effort into their comments. Harris is going to be a free agent next offseason with D'Brick, Mangold, Braylon and Revis if I'm not mistaken. They just may not have the juice to bring him back. Thomas is legit. He stepped up massively senior bowl week and showed why he's a top level prospect. He got overshadowed a bit at UNC by Marvin Austin, but the fact that he's legitimate NT size with great NT skills doesn't hurt to get noticed. You were right with the latter statement. I love Linval, I think he's got massive potential, but to me Thomas is more of a sure bet, especially coming from Butch Davis' program. If Thomas is gone after a trade down I wouldn't blink to get Joseph a little later. And I agree, I wouldn't mind at all seeing them deal down again in the 2nd to add more picks, or trade down even further from Rd 1 to get better ones. You have to think though, there might be a win-now mentality, but what's the real difference this year between OL and DB if it's in Rds 2 or 5? A rookie corner would be a fourth corner at best, and a safety would be in the same spot, probably playing even less no matter where they were drafted. An OL would be much the same, regardless of Rd 2 or 5. Now if you want to say Pool gets hurt, they'd need a safety to be apart of that rotation, right? Yes, but if Faneca, Moore, or Woody gets hurt? They're in serious trouble, no rotation to help that new starter out either. Unless you're comfortable with Rob Turner or Matt Slausen, they need to find a youngster ready to step in. That becomes even more important in year two, because more likely than not one of those older lineman won't be back. Thanks, I appreciate it. I had my OL bit a little earlier, but to repeat something I said in another post about OLBs, they'll probably be looking for a passrushing specialist who can develop into a starter. They can get that guy layer with the depth at the position. JPP is a unique talent, and after Morgan he may end up as the most highly valued End available. Might Graham be there at 19? Sure, but JPP most likely won't be with Tennessee sitting at #16. They turned Kearse into the freak once and will probably see a lot of similarities in Pierre Paul. Atlanta is a really solidly built team, depth all over the field, and can afford to make a move for a potentially elite player.
Excellent work up GH. going back to your response to me, seen in bold, I am glad to see you havent flip flopped on me you really convinced me about Joseph. Depending on the board after a first trade back, I would love to slide back again, the board at 38 that you had set up is a perfect example. Say we slide back to the mid-late 40's there you could select Joseph, your future replacement for Jenkins, then at 61 you could draft Alex Carrington, and have essentially rebuilt our DL in one round. With the extra selections we get by trading back twice, we can then select a suitable OL in the third, and getting that all important slot guy in the 4th or 5th. I just think trading back again is just a better option overrall.
Excellent draft, cane, though I have to admit Gil Brandt has me firmly entrenched on the Linval Joseph bandwagon  I like Cam Thomas too and really like this draft regardless, but I would prefer Joseph with that early 2 John Jerry, Manny Sanders and Robert Johnson are three of my personal favorites as well Its a Great draft in my view, and very realistic in terms of draft positioning for each selection
I gotta be honest. You do good work on here GH, but I'd be bummed if that was our draft. I wouldn't trade down with out getting a 3rd rounder, and I don't love the picks. I like Jerry too, but we need a WR or a CB in that spot. Use the extra picks to develop lineman.
I had my response to taking a DB in that spot on the previous page, and the 2nd round is way too early to be taking a slot receiver in an offense where he'd only be a fourth option. Now, if the Jets are planning on taking a receiver to develop into a starter, which is the only real reason they'd be thinking WR in the 2nd, then they should take Demaryius Thomas is Rd 1, and not even consider waiting. As for the 3rd rounder, it'd mean dropping further and losing the 2nd pick, I preferred to get an additional 5th. It allows for the Jets to get additional depth, specifically that pick of the ILB to develop behind Harris and Scott that doesn't really appear in any Jet mocks I've seen. The Jets don't have a lot of massive instant needs, but they do have a number of positions where they could definitely use a young player to develop.
Thanks Jabba. You know I'm a huge fan of Linval Joseph, I just think the risk is lower with Cam Thomas. Bigger competition and a defensive system that I really trust under Butch Davis. That said, Linval's the man, and I wouldn't mind to see him in that spot at all. I've been riding that pick for a while now in Rd 2, and would love to see him as a Jet in a few weeks, regardless of where it is.
GB traded a 2nd and 2 3rd last year to move up from 41 to #26, but then also got a 5th back from New England. I mixed that, the Pats other trade, #40 for 47 and 4th and a 6th, and the pick board to come up with what I did.
What's Robert Johnson's knocks on him that drops him all the way to the mid rounds if he's a stud in coverage? "Sherry Syndrome" where he's afraid of contact? Shitty run support?
Skinny and not really any kind of force in the run game. In my mind he just needs to get into a real weight training program.
Not necessarily. It just makes more sense for this draft. THere are so many juniors that this third round is equal to last years second. I'd give up a 6th or next years 5th to do it.
I have a feeling Thomas will be gone way before our first pick. I've been thinking that a good move would be to take a Riley Cooper with our late second rounder. This would also give us the ability to move JCO around the field(and he plays the slot well already). I think we have a good backup to Harris in Westerman, but agree we need more depth.
