Sports Science timed Darnold's release and found it isn't slow. So I don't the think the INTs are a result of his mechanics, I think they're because he tries to a be a gunslinger.
The zone blocking scheme allows you to spend less draft and/or FA capital on offensive linemen. You can get buy smaller weaker offensive linemen as long as they are agile.

Both of those kids got beaten to pulps behind marginal OLines. I think Harrington took 125 sacks over 8 years. Not sure what Couch's sack count was (166 sacks over 5 years). That's a beating no professional QB should take. You just can't ignore the OL or your Qb pays the price and that's a fate I really don't want Darnold to experience.

Brady has played 17 seasons and sacked 452 times or about 26.5 times per year on average.
To answer the OP's original question, I wanted to sign Cousins because I thought there was no way we'd get Darnold. Even after trading up to 3, I didn't think Darnold was a possibility. But had you told me before free agency that we could sign Cousins or draft Darnold, I'd have chosen to draft Darnold.
He had a pretty good QB in front of him though. Same as with Rodgers. I don't think Macc considers Darnold a "two year project". I sure hope he isn't. That said, if he has to sit some games at the beginning, so be it. But to decide up front that he has sit a year - or two! - is the wrong approach. "David Carr" syndrome happened because Carr was on a horrible team. While the Jets aren't very good, they're not horrible. And the rules protecting QBs are much stricter now as well. The point is, let Darnold compete for the starting job. If he wins it, then let him play; if he doesn't, then you see where he's at and know what kind of timeline we're looking at.
What does that mean? Does that mean you'd want him to start next year regardless, even if it hurts his long-term development and may cause him to never be as good or effective as if he sat for 2 years? Besides, it's not like he'd be sitting on his ass doing nothing. He'd be working hard to fix his fundamentals, learn the WCO, develop chemistry with his offensive teammates, studying film of opposing Ds, learning, mastering the fine art of playing QB, etc. It may not take 2 years, and I hope it doesn't, but if that's what he needs to be ultimately successful, then he should get it imo.

What about Goff? You talked about Wentz in that draft. Goff was the opposite. So terrible that everyone called him an INSTANT bust. Then he played great in 2017 and all of that was forgotten. Wentz played really good in 2017. He truly was the MVP until injury. What happens on the field is all that matters. So Darnold just needs to progress his rookie season. If he looks like Hackenberg or complete garbage, maybe people will form negative opinions, but I don't see that happening.
