How much to keep Holmes?

I don't know if it's a sure thing that he will be on a team this year. I'd think that he would have been signed by someone now if he was looked at as a potential contributor. Maybe he'll get a shot when some receivers get injured in training or the preseason, or mid-season. It's just been a long time since he was consistently good, and he's missed lots of games, and does have a rep (warranted or not) of being a bad locker room presence. On the other hand, he was very good a few years back.

I don't think the front office likes Holmes very much, and he hasn't been very good on this team, overall. He's had good games, but ever since the 2011 injury he was never the same. They'd have to be extremely desperate to consider him, and I think they will want to see how the rookies do, hoping that they got lucky with one or two of their later round wideout picks- maybe the next WC.

Yeah yeah. It's pretty obvious he's not coming back at this point, but I'm sure he'll find a home before the TC begins, even if it's just on a prove it type deal as I was hoping for from the Jets. I just hope he doesn't end up on the Pats or another elite QB team that we face this year. I'm near positive his production with an elite QB would be at least 3 times better than with rookie Geno / Mark Sanchez.

I think the only way Holmes gets signed is if a playoff contender loses a starting WR for the season during TC or early in the season.

When you look at the trend (as reflected in this year's draft to a significant extent) of Idzik placing an emphasis on trying to secure high character players, even at the right money, my guess is that a Holmes signing would be a last ditch solution absent any better trade/FA/waiver alternatives presenting themselves between now and the start of the regular season. Rex had a much higher tolerance threshold for "difficult" players that I believe our current GM is far more inclined to vigorously avoid if possible. It would be one thing if he was healthy, gave us a strong workout showcase, was available at a good price and able to convincingly demonstrate a reformed attitude but unfortunately, Holmes has an extensive history of manic behavioral cycles whereby he appears to have finally seen the light by saying and doing the right things on and off the field only to fall back into his poisonous behavioral habits. He's like two different people (Dr. Santonio and Mr. Holmes, if you will) and if you sign him, I think you have to be prepared to deal with consequences of having both.

Sometimes it's just best to move on. I'd consider a vet minimum deal, but would Holmes be happy with that? Probably not.

Holmes will be lucky to find a team. He'll be in training camp with someone but no chance he's back here.

You would think his ego would be kept in check after the whole league basically passed on him, but it is Holmes.

Holmes' character flaws are greatly blown out of proportion, as I've demonstrated numerous times. It could be argued that in almost every situation that he thought he was doing the right thing. Obviously in the Dolphins game he blew up emotionally because the offense was terrible that day and Wayne Hunter was flat out garbage. Holmes had called out Hunter publicly before that as well during the season. Yeah, that's partially on him, but not completely. Since that incident, Holmes has not had any character issues. Yeah, he didn't say the PC things to the media and even trolls them from time to time, but fans act like the guy constantly bitched and complained about everything, ignoring his enormous contributions to community work, his working with the young receivers (ie Kerley) and him fighting very hard to come back from a devastating injury that often ends careers. The guy rehabbed his ass off, and even when he couldn't participate, he'd be working with the young guys. I think a lot of teams would be nuts to not at least give him an incentive based deal. He never fully came back from the injury and it was compounded by another injury at the time, so the deck was definitely stacked against him last season. Maybe he won't ever return to form, but I feel the guy at least deserves one more year to try. Lisfranc injuries are no laughing matter.

Holmes will find another team to play on and get more than the vet minimum, but at this point with all of our young receivers we don't need him. Too much baggage.

I agree 100%. Plus he had a rookie QB last season.

Right now the Jets don't need him. Would he be willing to be the 3rd or 4th receiver. He'll have to settle somewhere for a lot less money and a lesser role. Would a good team like the Seahawks be interested in a guy like him as a reserve Wr?

I have posted many posts defending Holmes from the unfair criticism he gets. As someone said he would sometimes troll the media, who deserved that, and too many fans followed the lead of jerks like Cimini to conclude Holmes was a problem when he wasn't. His arguments with the OL were ones where he was right and also the team captain. I think he was right there, too, to be speaking out as a captain. And having to play with such awful Qb's as Sanchez and Smith would get on my nerves, too.

But... I think the FO concluded he was some combination of a media problem for them, too, but also would not come back at any point with enough speed to be #1 anymore. Since the Jets had to cut him for contract reasons, and have Kerley for the slot and now Decker playing some 1 and 2, Holmes is not a good fit for the Jets anymore. So I don't really have much to say about him at this point. I do expect he's going to get a shot somewhere to show whehter he's back or not, but since it will be somewhere else, all I have to say is good luck to him. hope it's not NE.

Why he his to come in as a 3rd or 4th receiver? Why not bring him in and if he becomes our 1 or he gets cut then fine. There no team going to bring him in and promise him he there #1 wide out.

For Holmes to not even get a sniff in FA I'm thinking "Tone Time" has run out

That Holmes contract, easily one of the worst in Jets history.
