The kind of character I would want around my young receivers would be vets like crotchety, not divas like Holmes. Holmes has made some flashy brilliant catches, but he is no leader.

1 year 3 mil, 1.5 guaranteed base, 1.5 mil incentives based on games played and behavior. We're on the hook for 2.5 anyway so why not. He could play for another contract as the #2 if we absolutely can't get what we need out of FA and the draft; if it falls bad(hey, shit happens). If we do get what we need like Maclin+ or whatever, we stick Holmes in 4th spot. Holmes is an asshole, by devaluing his importance to the team and NOT making him the "go to guy" could be a win for the Jets. Look at how he was when we had J-Co and Braylon, and Holmes wasn't regarded as the man while playing for a contract; they got a model citizen for the most part.

Wow really so basically we would have the same WRs as last season,Witch is the worst WR core in the league.Great plan, thank god you don't work for the Jets. And there's no reason to keep Holmes we need new blood on offense .Holmes will never play another down as a Jet ,he is injury prone and has lost more then a half a step.Time to go.in a new direction.I wouldn't want him back for free

Then you too are misremembering that play.

You know how posters here always think they are looking at things "objectively" or through the prism of "reality"?

Well Wayne Chrebet was one of my all-time favorite Jets, one of my all-time favorite sports figures.. I can't look at anything he ever did "objectively". My opinions of him are completely slanted by subjectivitey. I was Wayne Chrebet in HS, small, white, fast (well, faster than him relativewise), great hands, tough, played RB, WR, SS, WLB, ran back kicks--would have done anything for the team. When he came along I looked at him as a kindred spirit. Loved the guy when alot of folks doubted him. Bought my older son and my older daughter Chrebet jerseys.

He dropped that ball trying to brace himself for the fall--no two ways about it. Wasn't hit, wasn't injured--just coughed it up. Most "objective" fans saw it that way, and even though I wouldn't admit it--there were a ton of fights on Matt's old board back then--I knew that I was wrong, that he simply coughed the ball up.

    http://www.sptimes.com/2002/12/16/news_pf/Sports/NFL_Round_up.shtml

    Bears 20, Jets 13
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Wayne Chrebet and the Jets couldn't hurdle the banged-up Bears.
Needing a win to enhance its playoff chances, New York didn't look like the feisty team that fought each other in practice three days earlier. Veteran Chris Chandler gave Chicago's erratic offense some stability, and the Bears allowed one touchdown.
"It just stinks all around. I feel horrible," said Chrebet, who fumbled after a reception as he hurdled Chicago's Larry Whigham and Mike Green, ending a 22-yard play and killing a final Jets drive.
Bears rookie Roosevelt Williams recovered at the 14 with 1:10 left.
"It's not something I sit around and think about doing. That was my natural reaction. It's not the smartest thing to do. But if it works, we tie it up," Chrebet said.
"I had a good head of steam going. I thought, 'If I could slice and get through there ' Next thing I know, I'm higher in the air, I'm facefirst on the ground and I didn't know what happened. It's my fault we didn't have chance to tie it up."
Chrebet's fumble was one of many mistakes for the Jets, who are mathematically alive.
"If he hurdles me and keeps running, it's a great play," Whigham said. "He couldn't get out of bounds. I think he was just trying to make a play."

Those were his words. He didn't know what happened but everyone watching did--even if we would never admit it.

Folks here have an agenda and want to romanticize about what our heroes did back in the day and then use that to kill today's players that they hate.

Hate Holmes all you want--doesn't mean anything to me.

Romanticize about how one of our heroes wouldn't have done the same thing in a similar circumstance--then throw out Wayne Chrebet as an example?

    Pfail.

Like I said--you are either purposefully misrememebring that play or your recollection is clouded by romanticism and what you want to believe our heroes did back in the day.

Thanks for the quote. The big difference between what you said, however, is that the article said that he "fumbled" and you said he threw the ball away or intentionally dropped it in order to brace himself. I'm not "romanticizing" anything. I don't have athletes as heroes (or anyone for that matter). That's just the way I remember the play happening, but hey, I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time that's happened. I remember being really upset that he fumbled on that play. If it happened the way you said it did, so be it, it's not the end of the world.

As for Holmes, I don't hate him, I just don't think he's worth another dime from the Jets. Even if he's now fully recovered from the Lisfranc injury or if he had never even had the injury. Supposedly, he has changed his selfish ways and was helping mentor some of the young players last year or the year before. I hope so for his sake, but that doesn't change the fact that he's an older, slower player and just not that good any more, and was never really that good anyway. Remember the Jets got him for a 5th round pick. No one else was even interested. The fact that he won a SB MVP means nothing. There have been a number of SB MVPs over the year who were FAs the following season and signed big contracts, and they sucked for their new teams and were totally unworthy of the contracts. Holmes gave us 1 good season. Since then, he's been meh. He's fragile physically, and to some extent emotionally. He's not the future. I'm not interested in keeping or bringing in any older FAs if they can avoid it. I realize that due to the number of the holes they have, they have to, however. For that reason, I'm willing to bring back Pace, Barnes and possibly Colon if they can't sign Asamoah or Schwartz. I'm also willing to sign a Pitta, Pettigrew or Maclin because they aren't part of the Jets past. I think that in order to move forward, the team needs to replace as many older, ineffective pieces, particularly those who have been a part of the "circus" atmosphere. That means Sanchez and Holmes especially. In addition, as someone pointed out, I think giving him a new contract would add the value of that contract to the $2.5 million dead money cap charge the Jets would have, and I think it would be dumb to add more money to that charge. He's not likely to stay healthy for the entire season. Geno needs a consistent group of receivers to work with week in and week out.

Yup, didn't mean for it to be the end of the world.

I guess my point was--there are plenty of reasons to want Holmes off the Jets--money, cap, injury history, diva, bad guy, no longer talented, just plain hate his mug.

But that injury? Because Jet icons of the past wouldn't have done it?

    That's just silly.

I definitely forgot this play, solid example I guess, but I still think the Holmes toss was worse. I guess I will only know if my foot pops.

Holmes production is poor and his character is questionable. I don't see any reason why he should remain with the team.

The difference between the two plays is, and for the record I don't remember the Chrebet play first hand, is I see a concussion prone guy trying to not end up landing on his head. Frankly anybody in that exact position is going to what he did 99% of the time. ON the other hand Holmes was on the ground and it would have been physically easier to just let it slip out onto the ground or maybe give it a little push away from him. Now I can't read what was in the mans mind or know the pain he was feeling, but I do remember being a kid and that flip is the sort of "fuck it" thing that we did out of churlish anger because something didn't go right. Maybe I'm projecting something on this guy because of his past transgressions but I think alot of folks see that play in exactly the same way, injury or not.

Exactly. Hate Holmes all you want. Want him off the team all you want.

Not because of the injury. Not until you've ripped your lis franc. That's just crazy talk.

So you're just making stuff up now to make the narrative work for you.

You have no idea what agony Holmes was going through, yet you're giving Chrebet the benefit of the doubt because he was a concussion guy and you're suggtesting/apologizing that he had a real reason to cough the ball up.

Look at the pictures of Chrebet. You may care not to remember but some of us do--some real Chrebet fans. He wasn't hit. He wasn't injured. He coughed the ball up for no explicable reason.

Maybe "it would have been physically easier to just let it slip out onto the ground or maybe give it a little push away from him".

    Sounds duplicitous.

I think you missed the part where I said I didn't know the mans pain. I'm only speaking on what I saw and, yes, what interpretation I can make of the two plays. At what point did I demean Holmes and what he did. I was giving a fairly objective testament to how the play is being viewed by those that want him gone. Earlier in this thread I said to bring him back despite the fact that, I do, think he's been a real asshat since we signed him. If you want to color my opinion biased, then I suppose you can, but the fact still remains that the guy has a negative aura surrounding him that turns people off to the point where a good chunk are willing to completely jettison a guy that can still be useful. A fact that is pushed even further by the fact we have a bottom of the barrel WR core.

I'm not sure anyone can make any cogent interpretation of Holmes' play without being in his shoes--or shoe as it were.

I'm a guy so I've never had a baby, so I'm not going to make judgements on my wife trying to kick me in the balls as she was giving birth to one of our children.

Not quarreling with folks that want him gone--I'm taking issue with him being called a pussy or not a true teammate because he "threw the ball away". Nobidy that wants him gone and uses that play as one of the reasons is not being objective.

It's fuel that is not needed for the fire.

Comparing Chrebet and Holmes is laughable. Its like water and oil, I mean come on, Holmes has so much talent and Chrebet had ordinary talent. If Holmes had 1/10 of Chrebet's determination, we would not have this post. I would pay a $1 per game surcharge to get rid of that dog!!!! What a jack ass

    Stop trying to be rational.

He should have knelt down, secured the ball, signaled to the ref that he may have been physically impaired and made sure to hand the ball to a linesman.

I've never had a lis franc tear but it supposedly is extremely and acutely painful- like getting shot. He could have been carrying his baby and he would have tossed it. To be fair, one could argue that he gave himself up and that shouldn't even have been a fumble.

But if you hate the guy, you think he stubbed his toe and willingly handed the ball to the closest cornerback to him.

Holmes has never done anything close to that catch by Cotch. Oh yeah, except maybe this and his 2010 playoff TD against the Pats. Where are the good emoticons? I need to laugh at this dude.:D:eek:

This is why this guy needs to be laughed at. He's posting nothing but hatred and generalizations. The Holmes throw was worse? How? He was in excruciating pain and thought the play was over. The other one was intentionally thrown away to save a harsh landing.

People are SOOOOOOO mad at Holmes. Get over it already. The character shit was 2011, it's over. He's been battling a major injury. Give the dude a chance, he offered to take a paycut. Unreal.

I'll just leave this here for you. Enjoy.

    Couple obvious points.

I've never had a lis franc injury so I know fuck all about how much pain it entails and what its likely to make a professional football player do with the football when he has one.

I've been watching football for 30 plus years and have never seen anybody toss the ball away like Holmes did.

As a fan, it is one billion times easier to root for a guy like Cotchery than it is for a guy like Holmes.

That said, vet minimum, sign the beast.
