Devito is good as a rotational player. He's good when you're facing G&P. He's excellent as a sub who can come in across the defensive front and spell people for a series when they need a breather.

He's not particularly good as a 3-down player that's going to be out there every series. He's not good as a 2-down player either because the truth is there are very few 2-down offenses out there any more. 1st down is more of a passing down than a running down these days. So is 2nd and 5.

I agree. Devito is a bit overrated. We have a front 7 full of guys who can stop the run very well but can't rush the passer at all. The way the league is now that has got to change.

Not to mention opposing teams who can run no huddle will take advantage of him being on the field. We have 2 teams in our division that can do that. He's getting paid $3 million this year to be a backup/rotational guy? I doubt he makes the cut.

They let Ellis walk when they drafted Wilkerson, certainly DeVito goes after drafting Coples. They still have Dixon (I think) as a backup.

Why would Jets just cut him? We can get value out of him, maybe a 5th. Yeah teams know he might get cut, but none if the team us guaranteed to get him in FA. And there is no way Debito doesn't command $3mil in FA. He's only 27 and has been a starting DE for one of the best D in league in recent years. He'll be traded or he'll be a Jet!

Because he can help someone now and we don't have to cut him.

Given that Coples is better vs the pass and DeVito better vs the run, it's not a certainty that we cut DeVito.

I think Coples isn't that much worse against the run than DeVito-- he should be a fine 3 down player, which will reduce our reliance on subbing in packages per situation. Should help against teams that go uptempo/no-huddle against us, especially late in games.

Not that we should cut DeVito. Hopefully he agrees to a pay cut, so we'll have a hell of a rotation on the DL.

Coples strength is against the run. He's a good pass rusher but he's an excellent run defender.

Yeah I'd like to see Devito stay also. He's excellent depth and there are times when the Jets will want him on the field. If Kenrick Ellis doesn't work out Devito is probably the best 3rd down NT on the team right now.

I'll miss DeVito on short yardage and goaline situations if we get rid of him. The push he got on the line was some of the best I've ever seen.

Then again he was non-existent against the pass.

DeV is a great backup and a high motor guy, but based on production he's not a starter and not worth a starter's salary of $3m. Redo the contract or say goodbye. I think he'd be willing to renegotiate.

Well, what value does he have in a trade? A 5th? 6th?

We have to cut somebody to make room for him.

I'm no expert, but if Assante Samuel only brought a 7th round pick why would we get more for DeV? All the other teams are aware of his weaknesses as well. I'd suggest keeping him for $1m; if he's not willing, be happy with a 7th rounder.

Don't think NE wouldn't pick up our castoff this time. They have no need for a lineman after their first round picks.

This guy is a great run defender which one of your DEs must be in the 3-4.

This conversation wouldn't even be happening if they had taken Ingram.

The Jets have serious starter (RT FS WR OLB) and depth issues (ILB SS RB G) etc cutting a solid player like him is nuts. Just further waters down the depth.
