    I believe 20% is the standard, not 17.6%

    8.8% sales tax is not unusual for many places. In Quebec they pay 15%

    FIguring out the 20% is easy, just move a decimal point over on the total and double it

    Standard tip is considered 15-20% according to most tipping guides.

    I think those tipping guides are somewhat out of date, especially for New York and some mention that at better places expect to tip 20% or more. The poll in this thread has elicited an 88% percent response for a 20% tip. And as mentioned above, moving a decimal point and doubling should not be a problem for any but the severely math challenged.
