I think both Bowles and Macc are getting undue criticism.

To me - what happened last year was, more or less, a fluke.

Incredibly easy schedule + A few lucky breaks and bounces = 10 win season.

Does that mean Jets were 10-win worthy? In retrospect, not in a long shot. While I don't think Jets are 1-5 bad [remember, they got 4 straight playoff contenders after 1-1 start] I don't think they were 10-6 good either.

So where is this franchise headed? Petty looked pretty promising last off-season, and hopefully he's ready to take over after this season. OL and CB are the next spot we need to focus on. Other than that - I am content with the direction this team is headed as of right now. Almost every skill position is filled with young talents [WRs, LBs, DLs in particular] and that should tell us that Macc is hardly the problem. Maybe Bowles can do a little better job with the defense, but we are not watching the dreaded Schottenheimer offense and Rex-Ryan offense, a.k.a. 3-and-out fest, any more. While it's sad, it is indeed a major improvement from 2 years ago - acknowledge that at least.

Just like I said w/Bowles, I think it's a joke that some of y'all put almost zero blame on the players.
So far the biggest blow to this team has been the secondary but if you think about it, that can be the fault of an under performing d-line.
That said, and sticking to the OQ
Mac is responsible for depth and $ numbers. What he did w/Fitz is a joke...let him walk.
I have NO issue paying Mo what he was worth..
But our depth...or lack of in secondary positions is laughable.

I agree with last year being a fluke, easiest schedule we will see for years, lots of lucky bounces and dropped interceptions were a help. We are about a 500 team.Give or take a game.
I have to disagree with the skill positions being filled with young talent. The WRs are old , Marshall and Decker. No real talent beyond them. Quincy is a nice 3 but not a #1 by any stretch.RBs are old , no proven QB on the roster. LB is an area of need.
The only solid position on the roster is D line and punter. Every other position is a hole. Either due to age or ability. Our Stars are not getting younger.... This team needs a full rebuild. Not mid tier draft pics and one year rentals to maintain mediocrity. That's the direction of the current roster.

Good QBs don't sit on the FA market for 3 months. Ultimately MaCagnan will be judged by passing on Lynch and picking Hackenberg before any of the rest of the QBs.

Can't really blame him regarding the line since it has performed very well and the guys he wanted were taken before our picks

I like what Mac has done for our team overall.

    Mistakes:
Giving Fitz and Wilk big money instead of resigning Snacks and whoever else the Giants added to their defense instead
Should have taken McKenzie Alexander over Hack
Should have taken Dak Prescott the following round
Should have drafted Peake earlier (no idea how he fell to us)
Should have addressed CB in free agency or earlier in the draft

Two year grade B+; Year two grade B-

I really only blame him for making Ryan Fitzpatrick a top priority and letting Ryan beat him in the contract bid.

Had we signed Ryan for what he was worth (backup money with good incentives) .. that way benching him wouldn't be as difficult and he wouldnt be overpaid.

I also blame Mac for his timing of his decisions in the off-season. He let the Fitz and Mo situation drag out sooo long and that held our free agency period hostage .. and also didn't ask the necessary players to restructure.. We could have had a nice cap number this offseason had Mac played the obvious cards right... but he left himself with little $ to work with and couldn't be aggressive in FA.

Coming off of a broke leg and a weak secondary which needed help. He was a luxury with us drafting DL every 2 years

agree that OL was biggest need in 2016 draft and all we got was a future 4th round pick for shell who played well at RT his first 3 years of in college, so TB brilliantly names him a back up at LT

As of this moment I don't blame him for a damned thing. He had to make choices on the 2 drafts. OL suffered for the future but right now OL is the least of our problems. He brought plenty of talent in other positions and this C staff is misusing them all to hell. I will start blaming Mac if he does not fire the DC ASAP and HC at year end if this shit show continues.
Every one was ragging on Mac for not accelerating Fitz's return. TB was the force behind wanting Fitz, a colossal mistake. I'm here to tell you that our record could not have been any freaking worst with Geno and we could have 12M extra to spend on areas of need, like OL or a real CB or a monster RB or God forbid a no shit QB.
TB is walking on thin ice and the DC is a dead man walking....or at least I hope so. Otherwise I will blame Mac.

His $12 million salary is spread over 2 seasons. $7 million this season and $5 million next season. They had to structure it this way to get him under this year's cap without having to re-structure other player's contracts.

    Overall I like McCagnans strategy.

He's filled the roster with veterans without trading away many draft picks (Tannenbaum). This allows his draft picks to sit on the bench and develop.

The idea is a "competitive rebuild"

Macc is just another in a long line of rookie GMs that Charlie Brown Johnson has hired who think they are the smartest guy in the room but are just pretenders at best.

He's about 20% of the Jets fail, Bowles is another 20%, and Charlie Brown is always the other 60%.

For the dummies that want to hold Bowles accountable for Fitz starting every week, the last thing Tard Bowles cares about is his accountability to the press or the fans. He is most worried about his accountability to his boss. Same with Rex's "Mark Sanchez gives us the best chance to win" garbage.

At some point, you have to call a spade a spade. That fat-headed little billionaire bitch is the reason for this team sucking year in and year out. You're a moron if you think otherwise.

    1. Jets have pretty good roster with WRs. Behind Marshall and Decker, they have a few young WRs developing nicely, starting with Enunwa. Besides, having a good QB can mitigate the need for a top quality WR a lot. [See New England.] Moreover, since Chan Gailey utilizes spread attack a lot, having a stud WR can be a luxury, but it is not a necessity. [It would be a necessity for a Gillman offense, where a stud WR is required to go deep almost every time and get the ball regardless of the coverage. Think Michael Irvin during the Cowboys golden age. Jets don't play that, and shouldn't]

    2. LBs are another spot that got younger in a short time. While they could do a better job with Lorenzo, overall the LB corp is not in the worst shape like it was a few years ago. If you still feel like the LBs need more help, that's probably because the previous regime ignored LBs for so long. They kept running the old horses like Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas for I don't even know how long. Finally we got a replacement, and more will be coming if the front office sees it fit. Blaming the current GM for the disaster that was brewing for the past two GMs is about as stupid as it gets.

    3. QBs too; at least now they have two prospects in the wings, and one looked promising, albeit during a preseason game. Same couldn't be said of the past Jets team - unless you count the likes of Kellen Clemens and Brett Ratliff as prospects. [NOT.]

    4. DBs and OLs: I agree that Jets need to spend heavily on these two areas in the coming drafts. I have mentioned these are an area of need in the previous post as well.

    5. RBs - that's one spot I didn't mention, but Jets could really do better with a stud RB. Coupled with good OL, that would help the budding QB a lot. It will become very important next year, when both Geno and Fitz are gone.

That's the way the NFL is set up for GMs and Head Coaches today. You get 2-3 seasons to prove your worth and if you fail you likely don't get another opportunity. Hence the reason why everyone hires rookie Head Coaches.

Are there exceptions to the rule? Of course-look at Norv Turner, or Mike Mularkey and Hue Jackson today.

Almost half of the teams in the playoffs last year were coached by someone who was on his second gig, including the SB champs. So, while the vast majority of NFL teams hire rookies, it's certainly not "everyone" and it's not a blueprint for sustained success by any means.

Of the 12 tenured HCs in the league, 5 were in the POs last year. Of the 20 rookie HCs, 7 were in the playoffs last year.

I agree Zach I'm willing to give MM thru 2017 another draft and time for his QB to develop before I decide ...
