He's had nothing to work with. I give him at least another season. The fact is our o line is in shambles and we need to get an offensive playmaker, whether it be at RB WR or TE. Another weapon is in order to help out Clemens. This year is a scratch in terms of judging Clemens.
I can't believe the talk of "Pennington give the Jets the best chance to win" continues to go on. Chad led the team to THREE points. I know the reactions will be "but McCareins bobbled the ball" and "Nugent missed a kick" and "Baker fumbled." Let's assume those don't happen...Baker's play would have resulted in a FG attempt and McCareins holds on and its a TD. That's still 13 points. The Jets aren't going to win games putting 13 points on the board. Furthermore, you'd see a lot of "Pennington Specials"...15+ play drives that end up in FG attempts. That is what Chad gives you. Look I was rooting like hell for Chad all Sunday, but the only reason this talk persists is that the defense stepped up and played well. If the Pats had scored their average, the Jets would have gotten blownout and no one would be saying that Pennington gives the Jets the best chance to win. The jury is still out on Clemens and, frankly, I am disappointed, but I really don't see any reason to go back to Chad. (And, yes, I do hope he is traded and I do hope he excels somewhere else, except when he plays the Jets. And, no I won't feel stupid if he leads a team to the playoffs.)
I promise to shut my pie hole about it as soon as Clemens is actually better, or we have a better option at QB. Until then learn to live with it.
I think it is pretty stupid to spend a high 2nd round draft pick (in a trade-up, no less) on a QB, start him halfway through a season behind a porous O-line and without a full offseason training program to develop sync with his receivers, only to give up on him at the end of that half-season. He should be given the chance to compete for the starting job with a couple of veterans and win it outright. I would give him until the end of '08 before I made a decision like that.
Has he looked great? No, but I say we persue him as if he is our franchise QB and bring in a vet to compete with him in the offseason. Cut/trade chad, bring in a vet, and whoever wins in TC is our QB next season.
At the very least, he needs 8 more starts behind a decent O-line to prove himself... At the halfway point of last year, if he's still struggling mightily despite better blocking, we should start to think about our other options... Letting him start the entire season before deciding would be fine too
Personally - I dont think Clemens is the answer , and I say we need to draft Matt Ryan But just becuase we Draft a QB , sign a FA vet or go out and trade for one doesn't mean we are throwing in the towel on Clemens. He will most likely get at least half the year next season to show he has what it takes , but you need to be prepared if he is not. Look at SD they had to move Brees , Cleveland will have to move Quinn.
And if Chad gets a first down at the end of the first half, the Pats don't score the TD before half-time....whatever. I really just want to see the Jets win and was pointing out that I saw nothing on Sunday that showed me that Pennington is a better option. If Hobbs (?) holds on to the ball when he cut off the out route and goes for a pick-6, no one would even be suggesting that.
I think he's proven he can't win with us. A QBs job is to overcome his teams deficiencies and lead them to victory. Clemens hasn't shown that kind of ability...the "IT" factor if you will.
1) The Pats score just about every week right before Half , give them 5 minutes , give them 3 minutes, or guve them 50 seconds they find a way 80% of the time. If - means squat - Clemens threw a Pick 6 - Chad did not. I never said Chad was the answer , but if you cant tell that Chad is a better QB than Clemens maybe you should stop watching football. I am not saying stick with Chad his time as a Jet is over but take away Clemens Bonehead play and the game was 13-10 with a missed FG , a Fumble at the 10 and Mcdrops in the endzone. Sure the McCareins play was on first down ,I guess its Chad fault the next play was Holding basically killing our shot. Please dont give me this all he got was 3 point Crap - it was a cold rain with 30 MPH winds- the main thing to do is control the ball and not turn it over, its a battle of field position in which on that One game he outperformed Brady, Clemens will never do that.
Chad led the team to a possible 13 points... Kicker shanked a kick, McCareins bobbles a TD pass, and Baker coughs up a fumble in the RZ. As I have said a million times now, Chad only passes the ball... it takes the rest of the team to do their jobs too. You keep on believing in Santa too, btw. I'm sure he'll bring you a shiny new wagon this Christmas.
I'm willing to give Clemens a chance to show what he has or if he has anything. But I am confused by some of the posts in this thread and others in the past few weeks. If Clemens' poor play is to be excused by a bad OL that does not protect the QB or provide a running game, why is it that Pennington doesn't get the same pass????? Pennington is a proven winner (3 playoff appearances) when he has any semblance of a good team in front of him. I just don't understand the animosity towards a player who, it appears, still has what it takes to win in this league. And where do you go for a veteran? Look at 1998. Was Testaverde's body of work better than Pennington's? Not at all. He had one good year in Cleveland and one good year in Baltimore in about 12 previous seasons before coming to the Jets to back up Glenn Foley. Drafting a QB would be idiotic. The Jets need to build their defense and the OL. If you are going to bring in a free agent to compete with/back up Clemens, who do you bring in??? I don't see a potential FA QB that is better than Pennington that will be in the market. The bottom line is the Jets team stinks and I am not sure that much of it was Pennington's fault. But he became the whipping boy for a franchise full of miscalculations and lack of talent. If Clemens gets the benefit of the doubt for these weaknesses, so should have Pennington. That said, if Pennington goes or won't renegotiate, give Clemens another year. But this offseason the Jets better use the enormous space they have under the cap and a likely favorable draft position to shore up the DL and the OL, because that is where these games are being lost every week.
I never really heard of a team being awarded a victory based on total "possible points" scored. I don't think Chad is inept. In seasons past he has been a great game manager and would not lose the game for you. This year has been different. He never was a guy who could put the team on his back. That is not to say he doesn't play hard. I am pretty sure most people have agreed on the fact that Chad is not a good come-from-behind QB. With the Jets talent level this season (and some say coaching) they are going to play from behind most of the game. Again, not Chad's forte. That's why I think Clemens give the Jets the best chance to win. (Again, not that I am overly impressed with KC, just completely underwhelmed and fatigued on Chad this season.) As I have said many times before, I don't understand why "chad supporters" seem to think that every person who supports KC as the starting QB hates Chad. That is simply not the case.
