Don't forget an all-purpose back. Norv's schemes need a running back that can catch, run and protect. Frank Gore, LT, Ryan "broken" Matthews. Greene doesn't fit the bill here, Powell does, but not in a feature back role.

I just however, cannot see Mark Sanchez starting another game. If there's an open competition and we have Mark, Greg and Matt Moore battling it out, Marks going to win again ...

The Jets will never contend unless Sanchez is gone.

Unless McElroy shows he can at least be a game manager, I am not sure how the Jets can get a decent starting Qb without some kind of trade that will take a piece or two away from some other part of the team. Sanchez' contract will also be a problem next year one way or the other. So there's that right off the bat.

I am on board with getting Norval as OC if that can be done, but the Jets will also need a new Qb coach. I assume Guge is gone if Sparano is, but as for the rest...

The roster. Jets will have holes at TE, RB, I am optimistic only one OL slot, two, maybe three, LB's, and probably another safety (since I doubt both Bell and Landry are back). Doing all that while also getting a starting Qb (unless McElroy can somewhat improbably fill that role) seems way too much to do in one off season, particularly with the cap constraints.

Add it up, and I think depending on the Qb situation, two to four years.

    You are delusional.

Go back watch the Indy game. 10 min lleft in the second quarter, Simms and Nance say it out loud.

    Sanchez doesn't get any gimmes.

Then they tak about Manning, and Brady throwing balls less then 6 yards.

Specifically Buck Frady completing 31 at that distance the week prior.

    Watch the tape.

Sanchez is your investment not your problem

We are a dropped pass away from being a playoff team.

To get a wildcard, you dont need to be good. You dont need to beat a single good team. Even if you play 5 playoff teams, you can lose to all of them and some more and finish 9-7.

this keeps going overlooked in this thread. people cant just say "all we need to do is address the wideouts/hb/qb or oline or offense...

we HAVE to address the defense because we are going to lose 5-6 starters. we dont have a choice in the matter.

Sanchez is the worst QB in football... and that most certainly is a problem. He doesnt get any "gimmies" because the biggest flaw in his game is short accuracy and quick decision making.

example: we had to basically take the screen pass out of our playbook because he was uanble to execute it. a frigging screen pass!!!

Clearly in New England. Hell that tipped pass at the goal line houston changed that game, I think we win if that TD happened, credit to Watt for making it tho.

Add a few players and maybe the odds of these negative plays occuring go down. We arent that far off, its just plays.

The Jets are just a QB away from being a SB contender.

The OL is still top notch and ranks 4th in the league according to PFF. We are 10th in the league in rushing despite having a QB. Our Wrs are young and promising. Stuckey with a mediocre QB would have likely topped 1000 yards this year. Not to mention he is pretty clutch. Holmes had a very good start to the year. Hill is a great blocker, has size, speed and gives good effort. He will only get better. Given another year of development along with a substantial upgrade at QB and our receivers could be very good. Our receiving core compliments each other very well. Stuckey is a perfect slot receiver who should be our third down threat who will only get better with better with Holmes back and as Hill develops as a threat. Hill height, deep speed and could be a great red zone threat and Holmes has the ability to turn any catch into a big play and can also dominate a game. If we keep Edwards that is a very strong receiving core with great potential. The downside is no receiving TE with Keller likely gone. But hopefully we can replace Keller with a more well rounded TE that fits our offense better. In other words one that can block. While Greene stepped up a lot this year he is likely gone. The Jets need another back to go along with Powell. I hope they resign Moore. His loss would be rough.

Our D is a top 5 D. Arguably the best D in he league. The D has been left on an island by itself all year watching our O go 3 and out all game. The D single handily kept us in games all year. With any offensive productivity our D will be very good. The big question is will Rex and Petine be back? If they will be back the D will likely be a top 5 D again next year. Our DL and secondary are both very good. Harris is solid and Davis showed some flashes. We will likely need to replace Thomas, Pace and Scott.

The Jets have as talented a roster as any team in the league. They just lack a QB. Unfortunately this is a QB driven league. Give the Jets a mediocre Alex Smith type QB and they are instantly a title contender.

Yeah I just rewatched the Houston game and Watts tip flipped that game, It would been 14-14 at half, instead we were down 17-7. The defense dominated the 2nd half, had we went into half tied or even down 4 we would have won. Instead we lose 23-17 and even had a shot to win it in the end.

I'd say a good offseason and draft away but that applies to any team.

This is the nfl where teams go from 4-12 to a first round bye within a season and where first to last and last to first happens regularly.

And you guys can say what you want, but even the 10 team lived on the edge. The big difference is they made that 1 play that this years team for the most part didnt. Look at 2010, Lowerys pick against the vikings when we had a 2 point lead, then the big pass interference in Denver, then clutch comeback against the lions who blew it when they went to pass instead of killing off clock, or the of course the browns game, then the texans miracle victory.

The 2010 made that 1 play that the 12 team just couldnt make.

With a top 10 defense year to year (although with Pettine possibly leaving that may not be a given) we can compete next year.

Let's be honest if we didn't have the worst QB in the NFL we're in the playoffs. We can easily be 8-8 this year with a QB with the most turnovers, worst completion % and worst rating in the NFL (Or damn close). If we even had a Joe Flacco type QB we're probably a 10 win team this year easily. Our O-Line was solid, our running game and defense were top 10, let's look where we were really deficient, at QB, plain and simple.

This team is so devoid of talent that it is easily 3 years away from making any real noise. Could we make the playoffs next year, sure. But we have no talent at all on offense and that will take more than one off season to fix.
Most likely our QB of the future will not even be on the team next year, and then will need some time to develop.

Yeah, there's a chance that the GM you hire may believe in your coach, but you cant hire a GM based on that. You pick a GM based on his experience, knowledge of how to run a successful franchise, ability to see talent and his vision for this team. If his vision doesnt involve Rex Ryan then that shouldnt matter when hiring him.

Rex has a ton of flaws, which is why I find it so strange that everyone here absolutely loves him. He is a great defensive coach. I will definitely give him that. But there is no one that this team has a good offense under him.

Everyone also says that his players would run through a brick wall for him... But after years of his teams not doing well in the clutch, including the defense, and 2 straight years of terribly unsuccessful seasons I question that.

I agree, if we could add a speedy LB to rush from the outside, we could have a killer defence. On offence we need McElroy to be a good game manager like he was at Alabama, another lineman, and a deep threat at WR.

If the cards fall the right way, we can win a super bowl in two years.

Based on where the team is right now I think they could contend for a wild card next season. That just means they could go 9-7 pretty easily, like 80% of the other teams in the NFL.

In terms of being an elite team they've never been farther away from that over the last decade than they are right now. No QB is kind of a killer and the overall talent isn't close either.
