You can tag somebody and then revoke it if you get nothing on the trade market. If we tag Cro I can't imagine us getting NOTHING for him. I don't think the Jets want him back, Revis is gonna be a big money player for the rest of his career so it doesn't make sense to have another big money guy who isn't that good on the other CB spot.

Even a 3rd or 4th for him would be a success.

So you feel most comfortable with:

A player who has less than a year's experience at his current position and openly struggles.

A stopgap who is unreliable in coverage.

    And a penalty flag magnet.

    Got it.

I'd really hope for more than a 4th but Cro is the one I'm most comfortable with letting walk. Cro for a 3rd while keeping both Braylon and Holmes would be the optimal situation but that being said, I think it is unlikely that we can retain both Holmes and Edwards regardless of what happens with Harris. If we have to let one of the WRs go, I think our best shot of landing value would be to tag and trade Holmes. He's the bigger game-breaker but he's also the most valuable.

Leonhard absolutely has to be on this team next year. He helped design the gameplan that beat the Patriots in the playoffs.

I'd have no problem upgrading the other spot, if we play our cards right we can have the cap space for Dawan Landry.

Obviously we stole him for a 5th rounder. I don't know if we could get that much but he's certainly worth more than a 5th, especially without a pending suspension for 25% of the season.

I was talking about the 30th pick in the draft.

Brandon Marshall has a rap sheet about a mile long, far worse than Holmes. And he's been suspended by the league too.

    OK.

If we can get OLB taken care of in the first and get a top 3(round) pick back on a tag-and-trade(I feel the need to point out that this is a big if at this point), then I think that gives us a lot of room to start targeting a safety like Nebraska's Eric Hagg.

DE is a question but we have Pitoitua coming back next season, Rex's favorite DE prospect from 2009 in Gilbert on the roster, a promising and large player in Marcus Dixon, and Matt Kroul coming off of the practice squad. I don't think we're getting a top player like Watt or Jordan in the draft but if we can get an extra pick then Safety opens up as an early option.

Given what we're trying to do with Braylon, Holmes and Harris, I think a guy like Landry is going to be a little too expensive, although I'd love for the Jets to sign him.

Landry and Leonhard play the same position. Leonhard always plays down in the box like Landry. Although I love all of Leonhards intangibles like an above poster I think he really hurts us in pass coverage against big tes.

I've been saying this for a couple of months now. Unless we are getting a top notch NT I dont think its necessary to address the D Line early in this draft. If you look at the possible DE FA there are so many guys we could pick up for cheap. Id rather build our homegrown players up.

NT, along with ILB, should be the least of our worries right now on the front seven.

We have a lot of bodies and UDFA prospects, but all that means is that we're gambling a lot by not adding any more talent to the pool. Guys like Ropati, Gilbert, Kroul and Dixon are interesting prospects but we cannot pass up a chance at taking a top-level talent in the draft if one is there.

I wasn't saying so much to forget DE in the draft because of the players we have but rather that we could wait a round or two to address it. Since we have a few bodies then we could be able to let it go until later but passing on it because of a few UDFAs and PS players is by no means an advisable decision.

Then again, we really don't know how high the CS is on those aforementioned guys at DE. I just think that given the lack of proven talent and the questions of Ropati coming off of an achilles injury, drafting someone can't hurt. At worst, Matt Kroul and Marcus Dixon have to find another profession.

    1) Maybe someone would be willing to part ways with a 3rd to grab Holmes...

    2) Oh ok, problem is there aren't too many teams with two picks in rd 2... but keep in mind at this time of the year it always seems great to trade back... but if you look at drafts from the past years not many good players were taken at the top of rd 2... I'd prefer to keep the first rd pick. Someone good always drops...

    3) My bad, you're right... but still I don't think he is one suspension away from missing a year...

Just FYI it was an achilles injury, rather than a knee injury. Not that this is much (or even any) better than a knee injury for a D-lineman.

Yes, I do... I think Lowery has a bright future as a FS and a whole off-season in that position should help him get better.

Pool started the season bad but has gotten better and better... it takes a while to adapt to a Rex D. I think he's already better than Leonhard NOW and another off-season should only help him more.

    E. Smith is a very solid tackler and if you ask him to do only what he's actually capable of doing (which doesn't include covering slot WRs or fast TEs) he brings a very physical dimension to our DBs.

Teams have learned how to exploit the weaknesses in Leonhard's game and for many of the games he was on the field this season he was a liability more than anything. Love the guy but not his contribution...

Lowery still needs to learn the position and he doesn't know how to call the coverage. He's a backup at best.
Pool has been in the league for six years and has either a) a long line of concussions or b) a case of PCS that crops up every now and again. He lost his starting job to E Smith and got back on the field as a starter after Leonhard's injury. He was a stop gap when we signed him to a one year deal in the offseason and he's a stop gap now after his one year deal has essentially expired. We can do a lot better.
    You're fucking clueless
He's Roy Williams part II with Eric Barton's ability to judge potential penalties.

Every good 3-4 starts from the triangle of NT - ILB - ILB. That Scott had to turn invisible to allow Harris make play means he was doing part of NT's job. We obviously have a lot of bodies for NT, but I don't think any of them are top of the line quality (except healthy Jenkins - who sadly cannot stay healthy.) Our biggest need is NT in my eyes. DE... not really. I think Pouha and DeVito will perform admirably there, and the prospects Jets have are more than good enough at that spot; I think DE is least of the worries, provided NT hole is filled.

Secondly, we lack speed and athleticism at OLB. We cannot generate pressure or cover the shallow field if needs be. *This in part falls on to the nickel/dime and safeties too actually.* Jets need at least two good OLB prospects - one for immediate starter, the other for phasing Pace out. ILB - I don't think Harris or Scott needs to be upgraded. ILBs go as the NT goes. Not the other way around. We have seen what both can do when they had legitimate NT in front (in case of Harris, even when he didn't have one in front).

Lastly, Safety position needs major upgrade. The likes of Coleman, Eric Smith and Ihedigbo should be cut, if a cheap upgrade can be found. Not only that, Jets need an immediate contributor from FS position, and SS position could see some improvement from Leonhard through this draft.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Shaun Rogers? Questionable work ethic. Lousy technique. NO NO

Alan Branch? Vernon Gholston playing NT spot. NO NO.

    My Ideas for Reloading

    WhiteShoeWillis

I'm in total agreement that Tanny has his work cut out for him. With only 5 draft picks, an uncertain situation regarding the CBA, and LOTS of Jets FAs, it's going to be very difficult for this team to even remain at the same level, much less improve.

As I see it, the Jets' needs on defense are: 1) pass-rushing OLB, 2) NT, 3) DE, 4) S

By far, however, I think their #1 need is a real, natural pass rusher at the OLB position. That and NT are THE two most important positions in a 3-4 alignment. As we all know too well, the Jets can't generate any real or consistent pressure without bringing the house. They need to be able to get pressure consistently with only 3-4 guys coming. With an upgrade at DE opposite Ellis and a real pass-rushing threat on the opposite side at OLB, Pace probably would contribute more. BLT makes some plays, but not enough. If he's kept, it should only be as depth, and imo, that only because the Jets have limited options as to what they can do with so few draft picks and so many FAs of their own. I'd love for the Jets to be able to draft that kid from A&M, but he'll probably be long gone before the Jets pick. There are some OLBs available that I believe would be an upgrade over BLT: Kamerion Wimbley and Tamba Hali. Hali would probably be too expensive, but if they don't resign Holmes and/or possibly Cromartie, they might be able to sign Hali. They also needs LBers who can cover TEs and RBs over the middle. I'm not sure how good any of those 2 guys are at that, but know they have generated some sacks and QB pressures.

NT also is a position of strong need. Pouha has steadily improved, but still isn't the rock in the middle that we need, and he's no spring chicken. The AFC Championship game proved that. There were lots of missed tackles in that game, but also a lot of holes up the gut. Jenkins cannot be counted on. I don't have a lot of hope for Tevaseau, either.

With regard to the DE position, I don't think DeVito should be starting. IMO, at best, he's a rotational player or depth. He makes some plays, but the Jets need someone better at the point of attack, and who can provide some QB pressure, particularly with Ellis' career winding down. I have hopes for Pitoitua and Gilbert, but unless/until they actually do it on the field, I think DE is one of the biggest areas of need on the team.

Finally, I think the Jets have a strong need at safety. Leonard makes a lot of plays, but also misses a fair number due to his lack of athleticism, size and speed. Eric Smith has come a long ways and is a productive role player, but not a starting caliber S imo. IMO Pool didn't contribute nearly enough and was lazy. He admitted that he didn't really bother to learn the system until Leonard went down. That's lame. I realize that they may have no choice but to keep him for another year, however, and I can live with that. I like Ihedigbo. He may have been their best STs player along with Brad Smith this season. He's also a good blitzer and hits people. Unfortunately, he also makes some dumb mistakes, and I don't think will ever be a starting caliber player, but is useful. I hope he's back. I'd love for them to find a ball-hawking S that can produce some TOs for the Jets. I think Lowery will make a good addition at safety, but there's still not a stud back there. Maybe the Jets can steal Dawan Landry from the Ravens for a reasonable price.

In terms of the Jets' FAs, these are the guys I would make a priority to bring back: Ellis, Harris, E. Smith, B. Smith, Edwards, Hunter, and D. Coleman and Ihedigbo if the Jets can't find anyone better. If Wilson had shown anything at CB this year, then I'd say let Cromartie walk, and that would free up some big money to get their other FAs signed or bring in an outside DL. The problem is that he didn't, so even though Cromartie is soft, can't tackle and produced few, if any, interceptions, I think the Jets have little choice but to bring him back at least for another year or two. Hopefully, Wilson will show enough that they can let Cromartie walk in a year. I loved Cromartie coming out of college and wanted him on the team then, but he hasn't improved any and in fact has regressed in his play. He just doesn't fit Rex's mold for the type of player for his system, either. I'd even be willing to let Wilson struggle and learn, if the Jets could use the money Cromartie would have gotten to bring in Hali or Wimbley.

Jason Taylor is under contract, but I'd release him (I never was in favor of signing him anyway) and Gholston definitely. That would give them a little more money to work with.

I'd love for the Jets to be able to sign an Asomugha or Nagata, but unfortunately there's no way they can do that. I don't think Nagata will leave Baltimore and will command a King's ransom. Asomugha wants to play with Revis and for Rex, but I don't think the Jets could afford to sign him. If they did, they might be able to keep Harris and Ellis, but would probably lose the rest of their FAs, including both Edwards and Holmes. I'd also love to sign Cullen Jenkins, but there's no way Green Bay lets him walk.

you franchise holmes resign edwards tender cro let Holmes and cro walk get a few extra picks that way. Look at some linebackers and draft the dline and then safety lb can wait for one season.

How about BT is 31 years old, a career underachiever, has never had more than 6 sacks in a season aside from 2006 when he is supposed to be the pass rushing LB in a 3-4 system and is slower than Calvin Pace? Would that be reason enough to part ways with him?

    How about no. Just no.
