He's an excellent choice. I'm still on Blalock as my #1 just because I would LOVE to have a young and potentially dominant superunit O-line, but Spencer is my #2 pick. He has all the tangibles and intangibles you want and he fills our most pressing need.
i wouldn't mind Spencer and his crazy mohawk at 25. I do think we can still get Josh Wilson and one of the above guards in the second round and in the third round we can go after a good WR for our #3. It still works out but I'm a fan of getting a great OLB in Brian Robison in RD2. So we go for Blalock in RD1, Josh Wilson and Brian Robison in RD2. Then we go for someone like Aundrea Allison or Rhema McKnight in RD3 or later. Thoughts?
I still like Blaylock the most at #25, but Spencer's absolutely my #2 choice there. Other than Gaines Adams, he's my favorite 3-4 OLB prospect in the draft. Either way, I think we should either go G in the first and OLB in the second, or OLB in the first and G in the second (Beekman?).
We can get Brian Robison in the second, who I feel will do just as well as a pass rusher in the NFL. We can't get Grubbs, Sears or Beekman and might be able to get Ramirez but I would be a little cautious about that pick. It would be better overall (from my viewpoint, anyway) for us to take Blalock in the first and get either Robison or Alama-Francis in the second.
Alright people are with me for the Jets to draft Anthony Spencer! I hope the Jets realize that this is the guy that can really be a factor as a pass rusher and all around great player. at 25 if Spencer is there he better be the pick.
I do like Spencer and he's def. a guy we should have targetted at # 25. W/ that said, I do not see our pass rush as the glaring need that others do. I believe w/ BT coming off the edge, D ROb/Ellis collapsing the pocket, and some creative blitz packages( Courtesy of some great downfield coverage from Vilma) our pass rush made some great strides and by year's end, was pretty formiddable. Now I agree and it could stand to get better and a guy like Spencer paired w/ BT could be scary, but I just see OL and the CB spot, as slightly bigger needs at this stage.
While I absolutely love Spencer and wouldn't be upset if he was drafted, I think there is more value in going Blaylock/Wilson/Robinson-Woodley-Moses is going to yield more value than say Spencer/Wilson/Beekman-Ramirez
I tend to agree, mainly because I think Blalock is a decently substantial amount better than the second teir of guards, while the fall off from Spencer to any of the 3-4 OLBs who should be available at the end of the second is not nearly as big. Mangini was trying our Alama-Francis at OLB as well and he is a physical freak (at 6-5, 280 lbs, 4.85 40) who could be a steal in the late 2nd/early 3rd for anyone who takes him if they develop him properly. Moses as well was considered a top 10 talent coming into this year and possibly might just need to get his head knocked one straight by good coaching to turn into what would inevitably be the steal of the draft. Woodley was also a potential first rounder at 1 point. There's just so much value in the 2nd at OLB that I think you have to wait til then if you're the Jets and then have your pick of the litter.
Spencers motor is always going and he has that look in his eyes that he is attacking exactly what we need on defense. you know in most of the good defenses around the league theres that one player that is mean and you could tell he is going to cause havoc and spencer is that type of player...
Of the guys who can realistically be there at 25 and would offer nice value in that spot, there are four players I will be happy with no matter which of the four we select .. Justin Blalock, Ben Grubbs, Chris Houston and Anthony Spencer Give me any one of these guys and I'll be happy .. and yes PA, I really like Spencer too
I'll have to agree with you Jabba. I actually liked Houston before he shot up draft boards but I think that with the coaching of a guy who could turn a WR into a corner (see: Mangini on Troy Brown), I think that Houston could turn his physical prowess into a top CB in the league. He needs some refinement in reads and risk taking, but he's a helluva physical corner and you knolw that if he's making too many penalties in practice with Mangini that he's gonna be doing lap after lap on the field. I like Blalock more than Grubbs for us because I think we need a big road grater in the middle to compliment Ferguson and Kendall's finesse blocking (which is more of what Grubbs is). However, Grubbs is very good in his own right and I wouldn't mind him if it came down to those 2. I'm just 60/40 favoring Blalock here. My Spencer reasoning's above, I'm pretty sure he's gonna become Adailus Thomas II for whoever picks him.
Could we get value by trading both 2nd's for a 2nd at the top of the round say 34th? and swap 3rd's to get better talent?
Jets are already short a pick. We're not going to short ourselves further by trading picks to move up. Players is another story.
