I figured they'd at least tender him at the right of first refusal level (or maybe I'm not understanding how the RFA tender process works?)
He is not a big priority right now and no one is going to be giving a serious look for a while. He can be easily resigned later. Why the Jets bothered to tender Drew Coleman on the other hand, I will never understand.
No you're right, that's how it works and they did tender him. But they could have probably offered him an extension close to league min. and had it all taken care of if they wanted to.
I give a "hell yeah" to trying Lowery at safety. With two lockdown corners playing man to man, the Jets will not have to rely fully on a safety, allowing for growth on the job. Same argument for Smith of Ihedigbo but for differing reasons. Smith and Ihedigbo could work blitzes/run stopping while Lowery could be on the field for passing downs.
I agree with letting lowery play safety ..when he came into the league alot of people said he should be playing safety just because speed wasn't his strenth it was his ball hawking capabilities ..i think it would be a good idea..either way I am pretty sure Rex knows what he is doing...
I was just reading up on the Saints draft pick. And since they drafted a corner, many people are expecting them to move Malcom Jenkins to safety. Which makes Sharper staying in NO seem all the less likely. Yeah Sharpers still a long shot, but if it happens, the best corners by FAR of any team in the nfl and 2 great safeties with 2 solid backup safeties, omg teams better all start drafting runningbacks or something.
I remember when Lowery first came out they talked about him as a potential safety. I think it's not a bad idea - although the CS has given us no indication that will be the case. With Eric Smith + Jame Inhedibgo (who I still feel like the CS likes) on the roster and Lowery to compete for 1 safety spot, why pick up Poole? I think Lowery will see situational duty and be our #4 CB this year.
We have to hope the Saints don't view him as a solid $1.8 million backup. I don't see how they couldn't, but I guess there's a possibility.
That'll be good until Robinson gets burned on consecutive plays and they have to shift Jenkins back over to CB. The number of safeties they would have, roster space and his utter disgust with the value of that contract would be my guess.
I dont think Sharper is willing to be a backup. He knows hes only got 2-3 years of football left, and doesnt wanna spend it on the bench
Well, one new corner has been acquired. I still like Lowery as a safety on obvious passing downs. In a pinch he could always be moved back to CB.
I think Lowery is gonna be doing a little bit of both this year.. kind of a nickel safety/corner role. Rex uses such a hybrid scheme that we can never have enough guys who can cover and tackle back there and be versatile.
Yeah, he'll just be the fourth DB at either spot, and basically play in nickel/dime spots at both positions.
