only if the RFA restrictions apply in the new CBA. Which is extremely unlikely. We only tagged Holmes (and everybody else for that matter) in the highly unlikely event that the RFA terms actually exist, even though its very likely they will either revert to 2010 terms (where holmes is not restricted) or it will be abolished, so that no one is restricted. The only scenario (at least that is forseeable right now) where the RFA tags would apply, is the one where the lockout continues until well after the draft, and possibly into the normal TC period. At that point it is conceivable both sides could agree to continue the agreement for another year. Under this scenario all the rules and restrictions of the 2010 offseason would apply (30% rule, RFA's after 6 seasons, final four rules) so on and so forth. But it was a good move to tag people in the event it does happen, then we don't lose our guys because we were to lazy/stupid to file the paperwork.
I saw your first post. It listed reasons why Holmes should be here-- fine. I can also list 100 more. The problem is, his agent just announced that he's letting holmes test Free Agency. That's an issue because to some other teams, Holmes CAN be worth 8-10 Million per year. If the Jets offer him 5 years, 32 Million with 18 Million Gauranteed, and he took it, I'd be happy. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see someone else offering him closer to 5 years, 45 Million. If that's the case, I don't want him back. He's not worth that much to the Jets. The bitch about this site is, I'm sure most people on here don't disagree with what I just typed- but someone will disagree just for the sake of it.
As has been stated over and over again for MONTHS now, the Jets have been prohibited by the rules of an uncapped year from extending Holmes. His max extension under the 30% rule would start at about $2 million with minimal allowable escalation per year. He'd never take that, and we'd never offer a SB that came out to 4-5 million per year of the contract. The "news" today from his agent meant jack shit. His agent "just announced" something we've known all along. It's not a problem; it's redundancy. Again, who do you think you're arguing against? No one here has mentioned Holmes deserving $9 million per. What do you think you're adding to the conversation? The bitch about this site is that people like you make threads that add absolutely nothing new, repeat the same info under a sensationalist title, sprinkle in some stupid comments, and then in the end scale their argument back to the same thing everyone's been saying for months.
No, based on the fucking recent contracts with top WR's. Brandon Marshall, Larry Fitz 10 Mil+ His agent should be fired if he doesn't ask for 10 Million.
Brandon Marshall didn't get $10 million. Close, but not quite. Fitz hit it on the nose. And Santonio Holmes is NOT Brandon Marshall or Fitzy. Once again, however, it doesn't matter what his agent asks for if no team will pay it.
It's also amusing that you call him a "top receiver" with his one season over 1000 yards. There are #1 receivers, then there are the $9 million plus guys. Holmes is the former.
as IJR stated, there is a gigantic difference between what Holmes has to offer and the likes of a Brandon Marshall, Larry Fitz, and Andre Johnson.... Holmes would be lucky to be considered a top 10 WR as far as salary is concerned. He has one stellar year of production and one amazing catch in the corner of an endzone in the super bowl. Don't get me wrong he should get paid, but 8 million a year is probably more than his agents could hope for. Especially when you add in his decreased production this year, coupled with the off-field perceptions and the fact he is one failed drug test away from sitting a year...
Asking and getting are two different things. Just because the top WR's are getting $10M, doesn't mean that's there is a team that is willing to pay him that this year. All of the other teams are operating under similar budgets as the Jets. Can you give us a few examples of reams that you predict will want to offer $10M per year to Holmes? Bear in mind- he's one violation from earning a full year suspension.
Regardless if his agent is posturing or not, Holmes is probably going to get a better offer elseware. He can easilly be worth more to another team, and I don't want to overpay because Sanchez is in his third year, or because he won us all these games, or because he was a Superbowl MVP. There were several points to the thread that were overlooked. Cotch/Edwards/Keller being a nice trio, diminishing returns with too many stars, and the offense playing fine without Holmes. I don't think he's coming back, and I'm justifying it. Shrug off the agents comments today if you want. Regardless if it's "new" news or not, the bottom line is, he's going to get other offers.
If the tenders hold up, yes. They may not with the new CBA...we have to see how it plays out. what everyone is saying here is that the jets are doing their due diligence as if they are running in accordance with the 2010 rules. Which makes sense.
The reason you need two great receivers on the field is to put pressure on the defense. If you have one top receiver, the defense can take them out and you've got problems in your passing game. (Like KC). If we had Cotch/Edwards on the field, Braylon would be drawing double-teams all season. Cotch did ok this year because Edwards and Holmes were on the field. All the talk about contracts is pure speculation- especially with the CBA in limbo.
There will be plenty of solid and affordable FA Wide Receivers we are able to sign if Holmes doesnt come back. I'd love to see him return, but look at this list and tell me there isn't talent on the market we could easily make a move at. Sidney Rice (MIN), Malcolm Floyd (SD), Mike Williams (SEA) James Jones (GB), Steve Breaston (ARI), Early Doucet (ARZ), Brian Finneran (ATL), Donte' Stallworth (BAL), T J Houshmandzadeh (BAL), Rashied Davis (CHI), Devin Aromashadu (CHI), Chansi Stuckey (CLE), Sam Hurd (DAL), Jacoby Jones (HOU), Mike Sims-Walker (JAC), Kevin Curtis (MIA), Hank Baskett (MIN), Greg Lewis (MIN), Lance Moore (NO), Courtney Roby (NO), Derek Hagan (NYG), Darius Reynaud (NYG), Brad Smith (NYJ), Johnnie Lee Higgins (OAK), Legedu Naanee (SD), Ben Obomanu (SEA), Laurent Robinson (STL), Danny Amendola (STL), Mark Clayton (STL), Maurice Stovall (TB), Santana Moss (WAS)
I agree 100% man, I really do. I understand the value of two good WR, and the trickle down affect of it. I happen to believe that big money is better off spent in the trenches, and front 7 than at WR. If I had 12 Million to spend on a WR and an OLB, I'd put 10 Million of it at OLB in a heartbeat. For example's sake only-- I would much rather have the combo of Woodley and Stucky than Holmes and Cactus.
I would take half of these guys in a heartbeat. There are some good ball players on that list, and they're going to be pretty affordable.
I know this board favors Braylon, so at the risk of being totally contrary and conflicting... And I want them both back for the record, so I'm not going to devalue Braylon, but in Holmes' defense... Where did the $10M dollar amount come from as it pertains to Holmes? I've seen people try to speculate about what Segal is likely to try to get for him, and it's never been $10M a season on average. Ever. Most agents, scouts, "insiders," have speculated Joel is going to want somewhere between $7-8M for Tone, potentially $9M in the craziest market scenario, and that $9M was a reach, and many believed it to be very unlikely, unless a crazy bidding war or supply/demand issue presented itself. Tannenbaum is smart and says he wants Holmes back. I think the "crazy" market scenarios will be avoided. I think when the new CBA gets done, he moves quickly to lock Santonio up to a "fair deal" and avoids a lot of ridiculousness. I also think it would make sense for him to lock up Santonio first, because as ESPN News said on this topic the other day, Santonio has the higher salary ceiling, and is likely to be one of the most coveted receivers. Don't let the supply start coming off of the market before getting him signed, because it just increases his demand, and thus, his salary. They said signing Braylon second makes sense, because his demand/salary ceiling won't be impacted to the same extent in the supply/demand game. He's not as likely to get priced out of the Jets' market. Holmes is going to get, maybe 7/8ishM is what the consensus seems to be. I also wouldn't discount what he brings to the team, honestly. Rex talked about how Tone was a "weapon" who in certain games was drawing double teams, and sometimes, not just double teams, he also had defenses on a week to week basis scheming such that they were rolling all of their coverage his way to protect against him, and Tone was still getting the job done more often than not. Rex even said if they wanted to do that to Tone, he'd find a way to beat them with another weapon, if they were attacking Tone in a way he couldn't get the ball. Tone, whether he's making the play or not, was a large part of our offensive success. He's the receiver that worries peoples, keeps them awake. Removing him from the equation of being on the field very likely changes the level of success, at least to some extent, any of the other receivers are going to have. He was a player that came in with a mentality of matching first team players with first team players on both sides of the ball more often and practicing hard against each other and hoping it reaps more preparedness and more success for the team on game days. Rex implemented it when Tone suggested it for a trial run, and talked about what a huge difference things like that have made for the team during practices and extending through to game day. Through the course of a season he's also said Tone's brought other stuff with him from Pittsburgh "we're" incorporating. Likewise, multiple teammates have said he's always on the sidelines of the practice field teaching, coaching, preparing, or getting schooled if he makes a mistake. Multiple players on the defense say as soon as they get beat by him, he's patient and takes as much time as necessary to explain to them what's going on, and how they can "beat" him the next time, so they can beat other receivers when the time comes, everything from technique to "reading" things. The list goes on. He's arrogant, I won't argue, and he's going to want his pay day, as he should, and as Joel should be posturing for, because he's a Super Bowl MVP who hasn't seen his pay day yet, but discounting the value he brings, his contribution, his work ethic, etc. I think that's a mistake. I want him back. If we have to pay him closer to 8M instead of the low 7M, fine with me, although I doubt it. I think it will be well worth it in the long run. He's not just an easily replaced wide receiver. When you leave a team, and the team that dealt you is doing Super Bowl press on ESPN talking about how much they miss your presence, how much you and your talent were going to be missed on the field when they take the field (like Pittsburgh did in regards to him that week)... That's not an "any wide receiver" will do type of replacement you have to look for, it doesn't seem. NFL Live analysts were still talking about how telling that was, and what it said about Holmes as a receiver and playmaker, just last week. Anyway... Just my opinion. Contrary as it may be.
Read back if you want to know where the 10 Mil came from. It was initially brought up as an exaggeration to the guy who started the thread about resigning Holmes. He simplified the argument too far, and simply stated that Holmes won us all these games, and we need to bring him back. Nobody is arguing any of the good things Holmes brings to the table, but there has to be a limit. I think it's not a dime more than 7 Million, to the Jets anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if his agent tries to get him 10 Million, but it really depends on the way this year ends up. Top WR's like Marshall, Andre Johnson and Fitz are all at or above that number. Their agents probably wanted 12 million per, and got 10. I'm sure Holmes' agent will want 10, and might get 8.
Half the guys on that list? You've got to be kidding me. If we lose Holmes, by all means, tell me which half replace him.
Do you even listen when people correct you, or do you just prefer willful ignorance? If you wonder why you get attacked, just look at your posting behavior.
The cuts they made this week shave about $14M. There will likely to be more. Signing Holmes does not preclude improving at other positions. And at this point, we don't know if this will be a cap year, what a potential Holmes deal may be, etc etc etc.
