Not as a pass rusher. I think we should have tried him inside because he was passing decent in coverage, but he never had the speed to play the position outside. Apparently the Pats think differently, unless they are going to use him mostly for depth and the glean the Jets' defensive playbook.
Agreed on the first point and no chance in hell on the second one. Farrior was actually a reasonably quick OLB who brought some impact to the game (note his 7 forced fumbles with the Jets in 5 seasons.) Hobson is a slow-footed linebacker who has never had much of an impact at the point of collision (note his 1 forced fumble with the Jets and none in the last 4 seasons.) I suspect Hobson will play with the Patriots for one season and then move on or maybe even retire. I think Belichik signed him to try to put pressure on the Jets to take Vernon Gholston on the 6. That's just a feeling.
Doesn't seem like Hobson was fighting off the offers. If the best he can do is a 1-year deal at this stage in FA, he's obviously not even that highly rated by the team that signed him.
Right now I'd be really happy if Hobson spilled everything Mangini taught him to Belichik. It'd take ol' Bill 5 minutes to get up off the floor after he fell down laughing.
When I read the story in the paper this morning, I had visions of you popping the cork on a dusty champagne bottle, grinning from ear to ear.
still think we should have signed him. he would'nt have cost us much, and would have given us depth at position.
What I don't understand is canning a guy like Hobson but keeping dead weight like Kassell or Chatham, whichever guy is still on the team- both of those guys are mediocre ST players at best. I was actually hoping to see what Hobson could give us if moved to the inside behind a much improved D-Line.
Well if Bcheat turns him into a pro bowler then you have to really wonder what are the true evulation skills of Man & Tan. OTH if he is just another player or cut then Man & Tan will deserve kudos for cutting him
Hobson was an excellent tackler, when he got his hands on a guy, he was down. The Jets are lacking in that area. He reminded me of Mo Lewis in that way. I don't really understand how having Harris eliminates the need for Hobson; it's a 3-4 defense right, with 2 ILBs? Hobson was never advertised as a speedy player or a big pass rusher coming out of college...we knew this the first day he got here... but he was drafted because of his smarts and his ability and willingness (a too-rare attitude on this team) to stick his head in and wrap up a ball carrier. Letting him go was yet another foolish move and he will do well in NE where they actually understand the defense they're running.
