And you’re not one of the homers? Just like to vent it’s not your fault, didn’t ask for any of these players, because you knew it all along that Jets didn’t draft the right players, don’t have the right coaching staff. So you knew it all along and had answers? So just want to bash other Jet fans? Whoa a Silly post.
People also seem to forget that these aren’t your father’s offensive or defensive coordinators. They’re not making slightly more than a shitty car dealer salesman like they were in the 1980’s. The better ones who might be head coaching candidates could be making really good money and aren’t going to rush into ruining their legacies right away. There are only 32 head coaching jobs and they all want to get there, sure. But 4-6 jobs are open every year. I get why some of them might slow roll their first head coaching job to make sure it’s the right organization and situation. This Rodgers situation appeals to pretty much no one but the Jack Del Rio’s of the world.
The bold is an under appreciated point. Our philosophy of never firing GMs and HCs soon enough makes the job harder for the next GM and HC because they have to spend time and resources dealing with the "screw the long term, I'm saving my job" moves the previous guys did on the way out. We kept Mac a year too long and we'll be keeping Saleh and JD a year too long if we don't fire them after this year. Retaining a bad GM and HC a year too long results in a significantly harder starting point for the new hires. The whole "good franchises have stability" thing is a meme. Good franchises hire good coaches and GMs and thus don't have to fire them. It's not like a bad front office always becomes good if just given enough time. Much like QBs, you should know whether you have the right GM and HC in place after 2-3 years. 3 at the absolute most, but you usually know after 2. Again, rebuilds do not take a long time in the NFL. They take ~2 years, give or take a year.
This is comical. You can choose to attack someone, say nothing, or spend a few minutes surfing around and find all the answers you need about who was against it and saying things all along and who flipflopped. You definitely accused the wrong guy of flipflopping, so maybe door #2 would've been your best bet here. Only in the world of the 2020s with social media and electronic communication can someone be so righteously indignant towards someone who has been right all along.
You are speaking at the very high level, where it is not obvious to me what are you even saying exactly? What "plan" would then new regime not want to continue? I mean to win is everyone's plan, so I would assume new regime will come here and would want to put a winning product in year 1. They will have their own coaches, they will draft the players they want, install the system they want, and current players should be able to adjust, just like the Giants players did last year, like Miami did. Both teams made play-offs. What specifically is the problem you are highlighting with that? Please do not say "all in", this is too generic. What is the issue with the new regime coming here and actually making play-offs in the 1st year to break the streak that JD didn't break in 5 years here? And maybe winning some games in play-offs.
I agree with this almost all the way. The only part I don't agree with is that we'd wait a year too long by waiting until next year. Only the Jets can accidentally find themselves in a position like this - and it's almost a guarantee they'll screw it up royally. They have inadvertently given themsevles a mulligan. Sure, the talks of a mulligan have been there all year, but that's for the coach and GM. This is the FRANCHISE'S mulligan. They can choose to just keep the status quo and finish the job they started with the whole Aaron Rodgers saga, and then wipe eveyrone off the map next year. That may be a year too late in the eyes of some, but it would be syncronous with resetting the franchise. Or they can kill them all now and reset immediately. They only way the Jets really screw this up is by trying to half ass it and do both things at the same time - which we can all be assured that they will somehow choose to do.
I guess I just really don't see any downside to getting rid of JD and Saleh after this year. The defense might regress a bit, but the offense can't get any worse. The only true downside is if it pisses Rodgers off enough to retire or something. I don't see that happening. This mulligan could also be looked at as a blessing given that it has laid out JD and Saleh's shortcomings for all to see. Rodgers would've somewhat covered them up had he stayed healthy.
I'm going to get eviscerated for this but here goes... I STILL want to see if Zach Wilson has grown some and can be salvaged...but he needs to be doing it BEHIND A COMPETENT O-LINE!!!!! However, I want to see that with a completely new coaching staff in place! Let's face it, too many on here have made excellent arguments as to "why" we should not draft a QB this coming draft. Not a high enough pick (you KNOW they are going to beat Washington just to shit on our draft spot) Not enough QB options where we'll be drafting If we waste the pick on a QB we'll still have to address the argument that it's the same shitty assed o-line in front of whomever! Of course, we can't forget Kal El...can't let his panties get into a bunch because we drafted his replacement. He seems to have made peace with Wilson being QB2. Then we draft O-Line the rest of the way and exert whatever resources we need to find FA's as well! Before all that happens, I really need to determine if I have any further energy to throw behind this team going further. 40+ years of this is enough for anyone and as much as we type, bitch and chat on these boards, we all know that NOTHING is going to change. Why not? Because it hasn't and we are decades into this. Let's face it, Hell has already frozen over once you realize how good Detroit is. Shit, even Baker Mayfield is being floated as a FQB for Tampa!! Yet, here sits the Jets. Loaded with defensive talent and a few bright spots on offense and we STILL can't get out of our own way. Simply maddening and I'm not sure I want to waste my time anymore. I'm going to have to think hard on this one.
Agreed. He may go on and do something somewhere else (highly doubtful, but possible I suppose), but it's over here. It's just a toxic situation at this point that only a change of scenery, for both sides, can really fix.
I have no problem at all with resetting and firing them both. But then you sit Rodgers down and say "we're going in a different direction, and i don't know what direction that guy is gonna take, deal with it". Do you really think Woody has the savvy and/or the balls to do that? I don't give a shit about Rodgers anymore. I barely ever did. But if you are going to cater to him and try and win, then you would be foolish to fire these guys now. Let them be the ones that take the fall with that and then off they all go next year. You won't find a single competent candidate to come in here and make a win-now attempt in 2024 in that scenario. That's why I say it's a mulligan - they have a free year to either go for it all and then kill the entire thing, or kill it now and Rodgers can huff it. But straddling the fence will create several more years of this bullcrap.
Every available situation is a dumpster fire. If it weren't they wouldn't be firing their GMs and HCs. There are only 32 jobs - all much more paid than Coordinator or assistant GM positions. Ben may not have been ready for it last year, but he had another year under his belt. Any available opening would for for a team that wasn't play-off ready, very few play-off teams fire their staff. Also, no one will be strapped to SB or bust expectations. The contracts are usually 4-6 years in length. Rodgers is signed for one more season. Just like Daniel Jones was. Like Sam was. The roster the Jets offer is comparable to other teams whose coaches will be fired, and may be better. I also am not sure that having Rodgers here for 1 year would be not be viewed positively. Yes, he got hurt this year, but the year before though declined, but played pretty well, considering Lazard was his #1 WR. The defense is rally good. It's really the OLine that is a major task, and if we tank well, there will be a high 1st round pick. I don't think Jets situation is as unattractive compared to others as people think.
Ironically, I just responded to REVIS and it is the right answer for you as well. All in is not a generic term - it is a very specific term for making every move and placing your entire focus on winning at the expense of the future. Whether that's a 2-year window like the Jets created when they traded for Rodgers, or a one year window which would now exists, you eschew eveyrthing else in an attempt to win this year. When you do that, you make moves like you suggested: trading 2025 and 2026 picks for 2023 picks to build everyhting up. But that sacrifices future years for obvious reasons. But that's the types of moves you'd expect JD to make since his job is on the line and he has to try and win. Expecting a new front office to come in and trade everything away to win this year is not realistic. If you want a new front office, you are going to have to resign youself to the fact that the new regime will not play it that way.
Daniel Jones did not come with expectations dude. The Giants were a clear rebuild project. I’m exaggerating a bit as far as the SB or bust stuff but any new coach and GM who will likely be a first time coach or GM and they will have to bend to what Rodgers wants next year. They will not be able to make roster decisions he doesn’t want. The only way you can clean house and bring in a new regime is if you allow them to get rid of Rodgers.
None of these guys are going anywhere. If Douglas has survived this long into the season after his moves are the reason that this season has gone completely in the tank, then he's not going to be fired after it either. If there were any justice in the world, he'd have been fired after he signed Brett Rypien. That signing removed any doubt about whose fault the QB situation was this year. There was that report hanging out there that Woody had said no more money was to be spent on that position this year. Well, that whole narrative completely falls apart after Douglas cuts one of the QBs on the roster and then signs another one (one who can't play at that) after the season has spiraled out of control. Douglas should be going, but he won't be. He'll be here to make sure there's another shitty line in front of Rodgers next year and then no veteran backup QB for when his offseason moves, or lack thereof, get Rodgers hurt again. Next year is going to be a carbon copy of this year, just as this year has been rather similar to the previous one as well.
I don't want to sacrifice the future either, and no one is suggesting that. I am suggesting something like for example, Philly traded up this year and gave up a future pick to get Jalen Carter. That doesn't mean they sacrificed their future. They got a really good young player who will be here this AND next year and 3+ more. So, when you say "all in" it seems like you mean "trade everything away to win this year". That's not at all what I am saying. There is a way to balance this, like Philly has done. There is a difference between "trade everything" and using some assets from next year (and some from this year like Zach if we draft a QB, Huff, etc...) to improve current situation. I hope this clarifies. And I actually want Philly's assistant GM here as a a GM. I agree, allow them if they want, we are in agreement here. All I am offering is that I don't think new GM or HC would want to do that. Good QBs are not easy to find. It's not a bad thing to have a bridge QB on the roster, who can still be very good. Where we disagree is that you think Rodgers needs to be the GM if he stays. He does not. He is a player, and GM is the GM. That needs to be made clear, but I don't see it as a problem.
Rodgers dictated a lot of things over the past 3-4 years in Green Bay. Whether he dictated them or not, the Jets did a lot of things on his behalf when he got here that he would approve of. I’m not sure why you think that’s any different with another GM/HC pairing.
I am not sure how much he dictated here, but definitely new regime doesn't have to do that, because they didn't bring Rodgers in nor is Rodgers an icon of a franchise like he was in GB. That needs to be made clear by Woody. But throwing Rodgers away like garbage I don't think is in the best interest of new regime. Good QBs are not easy to find. At this point Rodgers is a bridge player, I think the dynamic will be as such. But I do think winning is possible with a bridge player who is good, and new GM/HC may see it that way. They could even draft a QB and have Rodgers start for a year and mentor him. There are some good options for new regime with Rodgers here - including a better probability of a winning year to start their tenure. And if they don't like how it goes, his contract is up in 1 year. Again, I just see it as positive. But we need to get rid of JD/Saleh and start fresh and let new regime deal with the players.
You don't need to understand what I'm saying but you do need to not put words in the mouths of others. Whatever is defined today bears little reference to what a new GM would define. I prefer to use common sense and keep an open mind. That might mean a QB in the first round or one in the third or fourth; maybe even one in the third and another in the fifth - the possibilities are endless. It could be an OL guy or two. There are plenty of obvious needs that must be addressed and many ways to get there over the next couple of years - flexibility is key. It may also take that long to get out from under existing contracts and their cap considerations - that's nothing new. It's important not to fall into the pit of rushing to sacrifice known performers for more balls in playing draft roulette - they are the foundation blocks of the future. This team would be a huge surprise if it managed to be a contender next year and should take advantage of not working under a deadline or ultimatum.
