When the dust settles, I think @Br4d ultimately has the right idea and a lot of these guys are going to fall much further than they're projected right now. Jones/Trask in the third. Mond even further if he gets drafted.

Guys like AJ McCarron and Jake Fromm had the speculation of "why not him - look at all he's done!" and they were both fifth round picks. Connor Cook and the USC quarterbacks in between Sanchez and Darnold are good examples as well (Kessler, John David Booty, etc.).

At the end of the day, drafting a quarterback is probably more about speculation than production than any other position. And the "it" factor is usually a must.

So you think we should keep Sam?

Maybe, but this year seems like a bumper crop of talent. McCarron and Fromm seemed like good prospects because there wasn't much competition, but while you may disagree with some analysts, the vast majority of them consider the top 5-6 to be legit prospects, and in this QB-hungry league with the short window for young QBs to prove themselves, turnover is high, creating extra demand for them.

Good post! I'm definitely biased and would prefer a QB like Lance or Fields who can hurt the other team with his legs, and give their opposing Ds and DCs something to think about, but as you said, the bottom line or most important thing is getting a QB who possesses a superior football intellect, has the ability to diagnose plays quickly, and who has an accurate, quick release and a strong arm. I think I could get excited over any of Lawrence, Wilson, Lance, Fields and Jones. The only deal-breaker for me is rolling with Sam.

I don’t think they are rolling with Sam, you can’t have a GM tell the world we are taking calls for our QB and expect guy to be on the team.

My point was that this offense is not going to be QB dependent, the QB will have to live up to his end of the bargain when it calls on him but it’s not going to be a 60 pass attempt offense every Sunday. It will be a 30/35 attempt offense for QB but he will need to make it count.

I hated Sam in college and threw up when we drafted him. But when the dust settled I was still willing to give him a chance just because you never know. Since you can't dispute any of the points I made and you're 100% sure about him, nothing will convince you otherwise. QB is in the eye of the beholder. Anyone can bust, you know that. And players can come out of nowhere to be stars.

Can I ask you in your perfect offseason scenario, what would you like to see us do? I'm not here to criticize you because I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion. We see things differently, it is not a big deal. I'm someone who sat in cold windy Shea, so I've dealt with Jets nonsense for a long time. Nothing bothers me anymore when it comes to this team. I will support whichever QB we draft even if it's not my first choice since there's really nobody I truly dislike at the top.

    Thank you.

To answer your second part it is yes and no. Growing up I was a great athlete and played every sport non stop. I tortured my body, but always played because I enjoyed being out there with my friends doing what I loved. However, as I progressed through the "system" of scouting and recruiting, I began to sour on the entire process. Instead of it being fun with friends, it became them telling me what to do which I hated. By the time I got to college, my arm was falling off. If I had to do it all over again, I would have been a catcher since I was a great hitter & loved the position. I never would have made it through the minors anyway due to my body at that time falling apart. Maybe I should have taken steroids like most around me did. That put me at a huge disadvantage. Oh well, no regrets, still have great memories and love baseball.

The same exact thing crossed my mind yesterday as far as how long we should keep Darnold. I really don't know to be honest because like you said, if a QB goes down during training camp, we have a QB to trade. Now that also puts Darnold in a bad situation knowing that he's not the #1 option here. Maybe he holds out, maybe his mind is not right. I just don't know. But I would jump on a 2nd rounder now if someone offers it. Other teams might be waiting for the draft since they might miss out on the QB they want. Whatever we do, the sooner we can get our #1 pick on the field, the better. He won't be asked to do much in year 1 anyway.

Trading down getting picks and winding up with Jones wouldn't upset me.

I would like them not to trade everything for Watson. My hope is they did their homework and Wilson is the guy for our new offense.

I agree with you. Not a big fan of trading a boatload of picks for Watson because then I fear we will just be like the Texans. I also like to build a team through the draft and build a foundation of homegrown talent, rather than the opposite through free agency. Also, getting Watson to me is the lazy way to build a team since then you have to go out and buy expensive free agents to put around him. Now, if we already had a solid foundation of cheap homegrown talent that has produced, then I might be open to Watson. But we don't.

Although Wilson is my #1 choice after Lawrence, I will be happy with whoever we select at QB. At some point we have to put our faith in the GM and scouting staff, otherwise, we're not winning even if we get a good QB.

I also am coming around to the decision that it might be better for the overall progress of the team if we are able to get our franchise quaterback with pick #2 rather than by trading for Watson. We just have too many team needs to be competitive, even with Watson. I fear that giving up substanatial draft assets for Watson will just re-create Houston 2020 for the 2021 Jets.

Besides, analysts whom I respect (especially Chris Simms) describe Wilson as the second coming of Aaron Rodgers. If they're right, we would be on our way, with a young franchise quarterback and all our draft picks and free agency money!

I agree on both accounts. I'm not worried about it happening, just saying that if it does, the Jets are cursed, will never get it right, and I am done.

Your touching on what is slowly becoming by #1 pet peeve/hope/concern is that I don't want to see the Jets get rid of Darnold via some kind of "get out of town at any cost" type dump trade. Even if they evaluate that they should draft one of these Qbs it seems to me to be a decent move to keep Darnold one more time as at least the nominal starter if they can't get a really good offer for him. Since you will have now wasted your hard-earned premium draft capital on yet another QB the rest of the team is likely to still be fairly shitty so at worst Darnold could be deployed as a punishment absorbing bullet sponge for one more year while the new kid acclimates. At best Darnold comes alive and you have a Brees/Rivers situation where maybe somebody still has to go but now your assets have enjoyed some capital appreciation during the building year and then you are ready to start really going for it in 2022 with more draft picks and a hopefully overhauled team.

Short version. I don't want to see Darnold traded for nothing and then have to watch Ryan Fitzpatrick for 10 games as the dumpster fire continues to burn.

Yes, 100% agree. The Jets have taken the shortcut way many times and it's gotten us nowhere. We always had to overpay players to come here and with not the results we expected.
