drafting a kicker 2nd rd never sounds smart, they jumped the gun because we were a kick away from the AFC Championship.

BUT! I will say I dislike Ohio State and watched Nugent boot AWESOME game winning kicks plenty of times. So there is a reason for the hype.

Did we draft him early? yes.........without a doubt. But he had enough hype that he was going to be snatched soon. Does that justify it? no.

My main point is give the kid a few more yrs before we release a verdict, for all we know 4 or 5 yrs from now he could smack a game winner that puts us in the Super Bowl.

and at that point nobody would debate the decision cuz theyd be too happy! yet, he could spiral down under pressure these next couple yrs.

we'll see, all I know is the offseason is too long and were rehashing a conversation that came after last years draft.

Yeah, you won't find that stat. I had to tabulate the whole thing manually last year, and posted my findings here.... which were then completely lost when the board crashed with no backup for old posts. That analysis took me hours to do. So, you'll have to either trust me on this or not.

We tend to remeber the second half of the season, as far as impressions, and it was the second half of the season that Nugent's kickoffs went downhill, and significantly. But, like I said, through the first 8 games last year, the Jets were #5 in starting field position after KO's.

Some try to blame it on the cold weather, but you don't lose 20 yards and a full second of hang time because it's cold out, and that is just what happened to Nugents KO's in the second half of the year. I am more inclined to think he had some mechanical glitches as well as a bit of "tired leg".

In those first 8 games, Nugent was consistantly around the 5 yard line, and the coverage was all over the returner, because of the long hang times. This was exectly what Westoff expected from Nugent, and he talked about it at the end of preseason. The resulting field position was very good, with the exception of a couple of out of bounds KO's Nugent fudged on. Kick offs like that can lead to turnovers. I was thrilled with Nugent's KO's through those first 8 games.

What the heck happened after that though, is what I can't figure.... yes, his KO's were awful after that hot start.

Good Post. Pennyandthejets just likes to spring himself on every post to show how much more he knows than anyone else. Maybe he should think before he posts. And its never with any respect. Its always a shot on someone elses comments.

Neil Rackers, in his first two seasons:

    FG% 57.1 (12-21) and 60.7 (17-28)

IMO at least where he was drafted doesn't really matter. Yes the higher you are drafted the higher the expectations, but every great kicker in the league, Vinetari, Vanderjedt, Akers, Rackers, all had piss poor rookie years. Contrary to public opinion, the transition from kicking in college to the NFL is not easy. So the fact that Nugent did not have that great of a rookie season, no matter where he was drafted, is not out of the norm for a kicker. This is the year that we see if he was worth the pick or not, this is the year he has to put up or shut up.

If this happens I'll never complain about the pick again, unfortunately doing that or kicking the game winner in the actual Super Bowl are the only two things that would justify the pick that early IMO. I'm sure he's going to be a fine kicker.

The Ones who say he sucked are the ones who's argument is that he was picked in the 2nd Rd.

IOW. If he were picked in the 5th. No one would be complaining.

So the argument is more of the Draft pick.

    Excellent points raj.

Now I guess you finally agree that herm edwards and company had no idea what the hell they were doing during their "stay". Herm loved the pick (personally I think he loved the pick because Nugent became the first player ever drafted that had less of an idea about x's and o's than Herman).

    Welcome aboard.

Exactly. Draft position has plenty to do with how a player is defined.
How often will a team hope to draft a Tom Brady with their 6th round pick?
How many times is Terrel Davis's draft position used when talking about his greatness?
If they were drafted in the first 2 rounds would they still have that same mystique?

Herman Edwards was the coach, not the GM. Name one HC in the history of the NFL who ever said he hated any draft pick. Bradway has sent the Jets down to irrelevancy once again. In five years he made only three acquisitions that made the Jets better. Hiring Herman Edwards as the HC and drafting Santana Moss and Jonothon Vilma.

'X's and 'O's? Jets are downgraded in that area as well. The new HC was given his first opportunity to lead an entire defensive unit with the Patriots last year. His film study and ingenius game plans, putting smart tough players in a position to make plays and avoid dumb mistakes revealed what a Pillsbury Douhgboy souffle of hype he is. His Patriots finished 26th in total defense, 31st in pass defense, 31st in defensive takeaways and that smart Mangini led defense committed the 5th most (dumb) penalties in the NFL last year.

You cant downgrade from hiring a coach that was a DC replacing a coach that was never a dc.

Everytime you point to EM's stats...the easy comeback is very simple.

He had stats to point to...along with a bunch of rings.

Your guy never had any stats....besides being an expert at cheerleading...which I do agree...he has taught Pennington very well in that department.

top 10 rush defense, and there was also a stat that in the final 8 games they were ranked in the upper half of the league in pass defense.

also i think someone as negative as you loves to forget things like the fact that mangini was shuffling 3,4, and even 5 DB's into the lineup due to injury.

i dont know if you worship edwards, or if you cant afford a chair so prefer a stick in your ass, but your a raincloud with legs.

which is fun cuz there needs to be people like you who provoke actual posts, but if your not satisifed, become a chiefs fan. i dont know what else to tell you.
