I really think the Jets should hire a young coach with a good background to bring a fresh approach to the team. Although I think it is low rent for sportswriters to call for a person's job, the Jets need a new voice. I watched my first Jet game at Shea in 1965. I still pull for them and chalk this season up to a tough schedule, poor play and injuries. A new program may have them in contention next year. It is obvious with the rule changes that the head coach must be involved with the QB, (especially if he's young) and the offense in general. Rex is still the same coach as he was six years ago. The game is constantly changing if you don't more with it you will not last.
Why would a top-flight candidate come to the Jets? Mangini would not be a bad option. He has a track record with taking bad teams (Jets, Browns) and making them better. Where he sucks is getting them to the next level. So hire him, have him clean up the roster and when the team looks better bring in a real coach.
What the hell. Yeah let's get Pettine back too huh. You people want a new coach no matter who it is. So like in 2 years we can do it over. Again.
I don't like Jim Harbaugh but he might be one of the better options. I definitely prefer a coach with NFL experience over some college coach who could flame out as that will just set us back another four or five years.
lets say the pool of openings is (Giants, Oakland, Falcons, Bengals, Skins, Jets, Vikes, Jags, Bucs). Where would you rank the teams that a top-flight candidate would want? Where are the Jets?
While it pains me to do this I would rank the Jets second behind the Giants. I would rank the Jets ahead of them but because of our owner we are second. We have a terrible owner. Jets are an attractive team to go to though. You're in the tri-state area with rabid fans, a ton of cap, and virtually any college football player you want next year.
Falcons & Bengals have pieces in place - Jags, Vikes and Bucs are young and could be good in defense in the coming years. I'm not taking into consideration where you live here but purely the team, owner, cap space and fans. We are pretty low there. Obvioulsy as a fan i would rather take on the Jets than any other team but you need to be objective here. ie. Matt Ryan can win a SB with Julio Jones and Co.
I like this question for the academic exercise alone. Ryan & Jones make the Falcons attractive, but, IMO, not more attractive than the Jets. Assuming Idzik gets the axe, the Jets' job will there for a big name GM/coach combo like the Parcells situation in '97
I actually would love a ST coordinator as the head coach choice. Much of their responsibilities map exactly to HC needs.
