Good point. Also the list of available or potentially available jobs this year seems a lot more appealing than last year
You don't think that 2 Super Bowl wins is "even close" to a HoF resume? That alone makes him a lock for the HoF. He's one of only 13 HCs to win multiple Super Bowls! They will look at his Super Bowl rings, not the strength of his division or how many times he missed the playoffs. Both of his Super Bowl wins were against the Belichick/Brady NE Patriots. The 2007 Patriots had the best offense of all time; 50 regular season passing TDs, and an 18-0 record heading into the game. The Patriots had Tom Brady, Wes Welker (who tied the Super Bowl receiving yards record that game,) and Randy Moss. The Giants had Peyton's goofy little brother and David Tyree. It takes a fantastic coach to pull out victories against those ridiculous odds. Is he the greatest of all time? No, not even close. But he easily deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.
Well he'll get in the same reason he was named MVP in both Super Bowls when he didn't deserve it in either game. It's the obsession over the QB spot that the league has turn into. Eli for all intents and purposes is average. But in a QB driven league with so many bad ones , his value is increased. To me he is not a hall of famer. Not even borderline really. But he'll have his day in canton based on 8 games of being elite.
Sean Payton shit the bed last 2 years with Drew Brees as his QB. What makes people think he will be a good fit for Giants with Eli?
I agree with you. It's just crazy that not only did he keep his job with everyone thinking he's gone, but he signed an extension lol
Clearly Irsay fell off the wagon again. And that's not to say Pagano's a bad coach but to keep a disfunctional marriage together (especially when the GM's terrible) is Idzik-Rex level stupid.
2 championships puts a coach in the conversation, i'll agree to that. but the conversation does not end there. if that alone constituted a HOF lock, then guys like J Johnson, Flores, Seifert and Shanahan would be in. while he meets the championship criteria, there are other factors: - were his teams consistently competitive, regularly appearing in the playoffs? - how was the career W/L percentage? - did he bring anything unique or innovative to his coaching approach, or advance the game in any way? - did he excel in any one area of coaching? for instance, a team coached by him will always be good at _ (defense, running game, developing QB's, special teams, etc, ...can the blank be filled in)? - did he extend organizational influence beyond coaching, like changing culture, developing out personnel, or establishing organizational identity? - did his teams play hard in December, or would they quit on seasons? with Coughlin, not too many checks beyond the 2 rings. now consider some of the same questions regarding Belichick, Walsh, Parcells, or other recent inductees. the bar has been set high, with not many coaches being inducted since the 90's. Coughlin just doesn't have enough imo... i do think he has a better chance than Eli does tho.
Agreed. I don't even think he was elite in those 8 games, he mostly avoided turnovers although did have a couple of very nice performances (Packers game in 2nd run stands out to me, even though the Packers D was horrid). The other thing Eli has going for him is durability and longevity, he will begin to become a compiler with respect to yards and TDs. You add it all up, he has a decent chance of sneaking in, but you never get the sense watching him that he is a HOF/legendary player.
Browns pulling crazy moves once again. Hire some guy from the Mets.. yes the Mets in some Moneyball ploy and now plan on hiring a HC before a GM.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/01/05/browns-hire-former-mlb-gm-paul-depodesta/ "After firing head coach Mike Pettine and general manager Ray Farmer on Sunday, Haslam announced that Sashi Brown, the team’s general counsel, had been promoted to executive director of football operations and given full control of the roster." So a lawyer (who probably handled contact legalese and whatnot) with no personnel experience is going to be in charge of roster construction...reporting to an ex-baseball guy with no NFL experience? No matter how much the Jets may frustrate me, thank god I'm not a Browns fan.
Shanahan isn't eligible to be in the HoF yet because he coached too recently (there's a 5 year waiting period, except for owners); but the others you mentioned are solid points. Jimmy Johnson isn't in because he won with a hugely stacked team from the Walker trade (which the league should have blocked because it was too lopsided,) and then he wasn't particularly good with Dan Marino. Flores and Seifert both did poorly with their second teams, and I guess not quite great enough with their original teams. I think Coughlin got a lot out of some mediocre teams, and that's the main reason I think he'll get in. Also, the fact that he won them against the Brady/Belichick combo - that counts for a lot in terms of the overall lore of the NFL. It's one thing to win a championship, but if you beat Muhammed Ali in his prime, multiple times - that makes you a legend too. His win/loss ratio is not amazing, but the raw number of wins still puts him at #13 all-time, just behind Bill Parcells. That's impressive. If he doesn't get in, it will be because he didn't have a high enough win ratio - and that'd be fair. But I think he'll get voted in. In today's "hey man, it's all about the riiiiiiiiiiiiiings!" media narratives, those SB rings will count for more than they would have in other eras. People worship Super Bowl rings.
Giants will probably be stuck hiring McAdoo as a stop gap. They would be lucky to get the Panthers DC but I dont think thats happening. Keeping Reese already made it a guarantee that they wont be winning next season. Im thinking he'll have to blow one more draft , Giants will go 4-12 next season , then Mara will finally clean house.
Giants supposedly interviewing Marrone. There's actually some support for him. Is it possible he's coaching the Giants next year? That would be a really classy move.
