I'd be curious to see Brant Boyer as a HC; he has been very good for us. My point was more though that the last time we forced a GM on a coach, we got stuck with Gase. The same thing would happen again if we fired Saleh, kept Douglas, and tried to hire someone outside the Jets.
Yes, many HCs you can see it right away but some take a couple of years to get their feet under them. I'm not going to try and justify how things looked in Saleh's first year with excuses about injuries, lack of playmakers, etc. but when a team has only given 1 or 2 years to half of their head coaches in team history then maybe it's time to stop calling for the HCs head after one season. I also wouldn't say the D was average the year before Saleh got there, they gave up 387.6 ypg in 2020 compared to 397.6 ypd in 2021.
I think good coaches show that sooner rather than later….yes some take a couple years but by year three or four a great coach will show up as such. Usually by year 4 if they’re gonna win they’re doing it already. I think Parcells was one of the best at this…he turned around the Giants, the Patriots, the Jets, and he did pretty quick. that’s why I hate the continuity for continuity’s sake argument. I think a coach does need time to bring in his players, have them learn his system, get his assistants settled out, etc. so to me as long as year two isn’t a disaster where it’s clear and obvious that he sucks (like Gase was), I think you gotta give the third year as long as you see progress in year two. so to me, if Saleh, who now has a much better roster, shows some real improvements I think he gets a year three…if instead were looking at another season of less than 4 wins then I think it’s fair to consider making a change instead of wasting another year.
I agree that sticking with a HC and/or CS just for the sake of continuity is wrong. That said, some coaches can be fired from one team, go and work as an assistant somewhere for a couple of years and then do well. In rare cases a HC goes from doing poorly on one team to another and does well there. That's why it was beyond stupid to hire Gase after he failed in Miami. I think it's too early to judge Saleh. He's had one season, and didn't have a lot of talent to work with, and on top of that, a lot of key injuries. Unless the team falls apart on him this year, I'd say he gets at least next year to prove one way or the other whether he's the right guy. I'll say this: I like that while his background is defense, he's really working at learning how to be a "CEO" as all HCs should be. I don't want to see him take over the "D", I want him to make sure the "D" and all the units perform to their ability and if they don't hold the coaches and players accountable.
We are firing our head coach after the first game of the second season and dumping our 2nd overall pick QB before he takes a snap in his second season? Just making sure I have this right.
