I don't think your fellow Jet fans will believe you until they see it in action. As a Bills fan, I got to watch Dick Jauron's "play not to lose by too much" football for almost 4 seasons. //barf //barf //barf! Losing 6-3 to the GD Browns while the 2 QBs complete fewer than 10 passes between them is not fun. The good news is that the system is perfect for Sanchez. He won't be asked to do much and so will have time for his GQ photo stints and Kate Upton. His apologists will be happy because he'll be starting and they'll be able to continue to blame the defense, the OL, the WRs, and the RBs for the Jets losses. The bad news is that it will be excruciating watching this kind of crapassed football, especially since the Jets don't have a runner with breakaway speed. Believe me, if this is what you get next season, you will be wishing you had "pass crazy" Schotty, Jr back again. Averaging 1 offensive TD a game is NOT fun.
Ground and pound only works when you have a QB who is willing and able to throw the ball downfield, as in 15+ yards, not little check-downs and dump-offs to the TE or RB because he can't read defenses. Otherwise, with a QB who throws short, the defense puts "eight in the box" and shuts down both the short passing game and the running game.
I believe the Jets swept your team this season, the 2nd of which Sanchez threw 4 tds. Thanks for latching onto a SOJF at your miserable convenience.
Thats because most casual football fans are morons who want every player to be Aaron Rodgers or Peyton Manning. The fact is when we had Thomas Jones if we kept our offense EXACTLY like that with Sanchez improving, that we woulda been a 12+ win team. Our problem that year wasnt running it too much, our problem was that Sanchez had 20 ints, 10 fumbles and a 53% completion percentage because he was a rookie. And most of those turnovers lead to easy points for the other team, The less Sanchez throws it the better he will be, which means the better we will be. its really that simple
We averaged 34.2 pass attempts per game. The Jets were 17th in pass attempts, 16th in rush attempts (27.7). We weren't trying to be the Saints, guys. 16th in rushing attempts is actually high for how poorly we ran.
Odd that a run first defensive team with a young QB would pass the ball 56% of the time and only run it 44% of the time, sounds a little odd to me
This logic is absurd. There are so many variables you aren't taking into account: strength of schedule, progression/aging of players, progression of coaching/scouting/adjustments, etc. The 2009 Jets had an ELITE run blocking offensive line and Thomas Jones had a career year. Fast forward to 2011: Faneca is 35, Woody is 34, Thomas Jones is 33. Do you really think all three of them would still be as effective as they were in '09? Do you think that after multiple years of doing the same thing with the same players, that NFL coaches can't adjust and improve run stopping? We weren't THAT dominant. We were actually much less effective in reality than we were on paper (YPC-wise). We only scored 348 points in 2009. We scored 60 more than that in a non-playoff season the year before. By DVOA, take it as you will, we had the 10th best running game and 28th best passing game. We had the #1 Defense in the league and won 9 games. That system is what you want to lean on? Running the ball more only works... if you can run the ball. We could not run the ball in 2011.
Because we couldn't run the ball! Would you be happier if the ratio was 50/50 and we scored 50 less points? Every single team that had more rushing attempts than the Jets this season was more successful at it. It's like the backwards logic that says "When X halfback gets the ball 25+ times, the team wins 90% of the time" The winning is not a product of the carries, the carries are a product of the winning.
Any Jets fan over the age of 10 is all too familiar with the ''play not to lose'' coaching philosophy - we suffered through years of it. The thing is, nobody has any clue what this team is going to be like next season. Just because Sporano is expected to impliment a more run-centric O in no way implies that they'll be a conservative, ''play not to lose'' team. Ground n Pound is fine as long as it's complimented by an aggressive scheme on D, which is Rex's specialty. The SOJ teams of the past ran a ''play not to lose'' scheme on both sides of the ball where they would be up 6-3 in the 4th qtr and then go into a prevent D and inevitably give up the winning TD. I don't see that happening next season under RR. If they can get the Oline shored up and stick with the run when it's working, the passing game will open up naturally. Obviously nobody knows how this will all pan out next year but whatever happens I'm confident that getting a run-first minded OC was a positive move for the O.
I understand your logic and I agree up to a point. The thing is that the stats don't tell the whole story. There were several games where we were able to run the ball well and inexplicably went pass-heavy. Just looking at the overall run/pass ratio it doesn't look bad, my problem was with the timing of when Schotty decided to go pass happy.
It really is enlightening to have bills and miami fans take the time from their spin around the inside of the toilet to come and give their insight.
Yeah, I agree with the questionable play calling / gameplans a few times. Although leading up to the Jets game, the Giants had one of the league's worst passing defenses, so that plan made sense. We made them look like a defensive juggernaut and they've ridden the momentum ever since.
Did I say the Bills were great this season? No. I said that "ground and pound" football where a team only passes when absolutely necessary and which so many of you Jets fans think you love is a "play not to lose by too much" strategy that's likely to backfire. The Jets don't have the team to do it. They have a decent OL but they have a QB who doesn't throw downfield. They have no breakaway speed among their RBs. They have 1 fast WR who disses his QB and sulks. That's reality. But, hey, maybe the Jets can outbid the Carpies for Peyton and bring him in to demonstrate how to hand off the ball forty times a game.
Just because we hired an OC who's known to favor a run-heavy offense does not mean that we're going to have an offense that only passes when "absolutely necessary". That's a pretty silly exaggeration. You're also making this exaggerated inference before any personnel changes have been made during the offseason, let alone the draft, so you're point doesn't hold any water - sorry.
No argument there. The Oline just couldn't hold it's own against the Giants' front 7. Same situation against the Eagles. There are plenty of needs to address in the offseason, but Oline has to be the top priority. RB, QB, WR, TE... they're all going to mean nothing if our Oline isn't solidified.
March Sanchez is better than harvard Zach Galifianakis and whoever they got over there in miami so I don't see why phins and bills fans are trying to shit on us...
