I was also at this game. When I heard O'Donnell was injured during warm ups I thought he was faking it and still think he was. Who gets injured during warm ups? I bet other guys where pissed they didn't think of it.
I think O'Donnell hurt his calf in pregame warmnups but I believe you are right that it was against Houston. We led NE 21-0 but it was 21-7 at the half and we knew we'd lose that game. That ALWAYS happened back then.
Those were really bad years. I was a more casual fan back in the early 90's cause I wasn't a big football head until 95/96. At least in modern times, when the Jets go 4-12 its cause of injuries...
I never understood firing a coach (Pete Carroll), who had just lost his last 5 games, in order to hire a coach (Rich Kotite), who had just lost his last 7 games.
Someone singing the praises of Rich fucking Kotite...now THAT'S funny. Wow, you just got off the phone with him? Were you ordering a pizza from the Domino's he works at?
the knicks pretty much got me through those years. and ill never forget after kotites final game in 96 someone dumped a beer on him as he was about to go through the tunnel. during the presser he was like "i was wearing gawtex"
I have to admit, although I liked the guy, I found it highly amusing when Murrell's reward for winning us our only game of the season over Arizona was to be shipped off there two seasons later.
Just a final note on those 12 sacks on O'Donnell, that game was against the Broncos, and my best friend and I were at a bar watching the game together. He's a lifelong Denver fan, and I was talking smack for weeks leading up to the game. O'Donnell and the other $80 million worth of FA's were going to just destroy old man Elway. Just like the year before, when I was at a party bragging about how we got Kotite and how this kid, Kyle Brady, was going to have a monster day in week 1 against the Dolphins. WTF is wrong with me?
Yes, at the time, even without 20/20 hindsight, everyone knew Brady was a POS pick. I was sick that we didn't take the absolute gift in Warren Sapp. IIRC, with the Jets secound pick in the first round, Kotite wanted Matt O'Dwyer, and had to be convinced and pleaded with to pick Hugh Douglas. O'Dwyer was still there in the 2nd round, where the Jets took him. Another Kotite gem was in 1996. Signed WR Jeff Graham off of a 1300 yard season, just drafted Keyshawn #1, but decides to take WR Alex Van Dyke w/the first pick in the 2nd round...universally panned as a huge reach. Mike Alstott and Lawyer Milloy were still there. If he just HAD to get yet another WR, Amani Toomer and Muhsin Muhammad, 2 receivers who were more highly regarded, were also available. I'm sure Kotite is a real sweetheart and a gentleman....but he was a fucking football moron.
i'm not singing his praises. believe me i know just had bad he sucked, i lived through it. but some people who admittedly didn't know anything about him first hand had very nasty things to say about him. he sucked big time as jet head coach, but its not like the guy was a total loser in life. to say "fuck you" kotite is nasty, to say he didn't deserve any credit in philly by someone who admits they don't have any memory of it is silly. but yes, as a jet HC he sucked bad.
Can you imagine that defensive line with both Sapp and Douglas? Of course, if we had failed anyway, BOTH might have gotten shipped off when Parcells came in and moved to the 3-4. Something tells me he'd have found a way to use Sapp, though.
Sorry that is freakin hilarious. We all dream big about the team in the offseason. I forgot about that 12 sack game, probably better to forget.
If all those players were acquired something tells me, he wouldn't have such a horrible record, especially with Sapp and Douglas, and having Muhammad/Toomer as a reciever
