None of the QBs were day 1 starters imo, never were meant to be. A year of getting a large number of reps could've benefited Petty too. Just have to hope one of the 2 become the guy. Pettys touch down the field looks to have really improved this offseason. I don't like the young QBs sitting on the sideline in practice they need the reps. Hack is getting his practice reps in preseason games. It's not right, dude ain't prepared. Petty had a yr still not enough reps
The problem is Hack needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. His footwork & pocket presence are F-'s. While those attributes can be improved..that doesn't happen on 11 on 11's in July. That's early offseason mechanical type stuff. Reps right now in this market is not a good idea. He's not getting any better fundamentally & this fan base will drive him further into the ground confidence wise w/ every errant throw. Let him learn other aspects & start anew next offseason.
I'm all in on Petty as well. The Kid has the size and the moxie not to just play Qb, but play it in the Tri-State where as we all know, unless you have steel in your backbone you will not thrive there. Petty has shown he can get the most out of the talent he's given to play with. He's made the backups look good and given time with the 1's and 2's, I think all of us will be similarly impressed with him. Petty took a blast last nite and was sore, but not a catastrophe. He also took that blast after completing a perfectly thrown TD pass hitting Anderson in stride. We Jet fans aren't used to Wr's being hit in stride are we. I'm not sold on Hack and frankly, was shocked when we took him. If Petty had shown last preseason what he's shown so far this preseason, Hack doesn't get drafted and perhaps Mac goes for a functional TE instead.
Good point. cant say Hack is a bust. But he needs alot of work and it could be a few years before he shows more of complete product.
I like Hackenberg's potential on paper, he's got prototypical arm, size, brain and realize he is also just 21 years old. We need to give him time. With that said, he's bad enough that you can't fault anyone for questioning whether his mechanics and feel for playing qb will ever be improved enough to be an NFL starter. Passing on Paxton Lynch is looking more and more like it was a mistake.
They could've at least provided that foundation this offseason to start getting it fixed. Let him get the reps with real weapons and learn from his mistakes in practice. Look at the film and continue to improve. Jets need to restore his confidence also. Dude is getting reps with the scout team, it's a disservice, cause then you throw him out there in a preseason game with shitty lineman. The kid can make reads, strong arm, gotta fix the footwork. I wonder what type of reps Rodgers got when he was drafted? It's the same story really. Rodgers had to rebuild his footwork too.
Aside from one Oline project (Brandon Moore), have the Jets ever successfully "rebuilt" a project player into a solid player? For years people on this forum have defended drafting project players early and touted their "raw ability", and 99% percent of the time the player leaves the team having shown only raw ability, then either goes to another team and fails or in very rare instances actually flourishes with the other team. For once, I'd like to see one of these players actually pan out for this team.
When we were all sitting here a couple years ago when Geno and Vick were our starting QBs, many people including myself, were saying that the Jets should just draft a QB every year until they get it right. Honestly, you can pickup the other other 10 positions on offense in the free agency. Now I aint counting the money, but for right now it looks like we have something in Petty. If you told me one of either Petty or Hack becomes our starter in the future, who cares about if the other one is a bust? Frankly, they should draft another QB again next year. I never see the point of older QBs coming into "groom" the young ones. Let the QB coach do that job.
Needing your footwork rebuilt is not the same as having a QB rebuilt from the ground up(when is the last time this actually worked?). And it's not like the Packers drafted Rodgers to have him sit for three years... they expected Favre to retire before Rodger's second season. It was also during a different CBA era, where coaches could actually have contact and work with quarterbacks during the offseason.
A lot of Hackenbergs issues are lower body footwork. It is ALWAYS sloppy causes his throws to really sail. They are absolutely awful at times. Getting his footwork to an average state could make him an average qb
Hack horrible bruh. That was the worst game i've ever seen from a QB... dude had a stretch of 8 pass attempts for -5 yards
Not that it matters now but that was a bit of a late hit on Petty - ball was off and Bryan Braman who's a special teams yahoo to begin with could've pulled up some. And Brandon Shell's a goat as well having whiffed against Braman.
Dude, you need to give it up. You're wrong. You clearly don't understand the first thing about changing body mechanics and are just making yourself look bad by stubbornly repeating the same old crap.
Well it's good that Petty looked good. Your looking potentially as him as next years starting QB. And I like he brings the deep vertical game....Hack does too...
They've identified a prototype. Which I like. They have a specific type of QB they are looking for that fits the cold weather, the market & the scheme. They like pocket style QB's who stand tall, can move their feet & have velocity down the seam. In time..this should provide some sort of uniformity & refinement within their QB development program and allow some direction in terms of what type of personnel they need to bring in offensively at other positions. Interestingly enough...accuracy/decision making seems to be the items they're willing to compromise on & allow some teaching/improvement to transpire. It all seems good on paper. But so have alot of things over the last 40+ years. Still no legit QB.
Hackenberg was picked 4 rounds too early. Paxton Lynch will be better. We needed a QB in this draft, but we just panicked after we reached for Lee in the first round. I hope he proves everyone wrong and turns out be good.
To say Hack was brutal is an understatement. He needs a lot of work and as other posters stated the team stated they would be making recommendations about what he needs to do in the off season... CG actually stated that about a month ago. BTW- Petty has come a long way but still needs reps... I hope they do not stick him on IR and roll with Geno but they are prudent and probably will so we all better hope Fitz remains upright or it will be ugly fast.
stunk big time. but hi,s line was awful and the penalties were killers. got to do his footwork. he is bad over center
