After his first drive, I was thinking "maybe I was wrong about Hack, maybe he's not a blown pick after all" I was so happy! Then, after his INT later, I was thinking "Geno Smith 2.0" ... Ah, the overreactions of a fan.
He acknowledged that post game, and made the point that the field position dictated more care on his part. I'd be willing to bet he won't make the same mistakes over and over again like we're used to seeing. He seems really astute and bright. Antone Smith really didn't do much to help him out when it was needed most last night night either, he actually hurt him. Lot of things broke down around him. Common to see chaos like that late in pre-season games with the bottom roster guys running around.
You said the most important thing that can be said about Hackenberg...that he won't make the same mistakes over and over. That was the problem with Sanchez, and then Smith, they kept making the same rookie mistakes over and over in to their careers. The key isn't how good or bad he looks now, it's how he learns and adapts and if he stops making rookie mistakes and repeating them as he progresses.
So the CS shelters the kid and keeps him off the field for most of the preseason. Then he leads to team to the leading TD late in the game. Great for his confidence. Then after a huge defensive stop, they have him throw from his own end zone on third down with a 6 point lead and 2+ minutes left in the game? What were they thinking? Run, punt, and let the kid have a shot at a win. I was shocked when I saw him drop back to pass.
I was disappointed in the play calling myself...I thought they tried to get too cute under the circumstances.
GTFOH! Nobody here "ruined Sanchez," nobody here "ruined Geno." Nobody here caught their errant passes; nobody here forced their fumbles; nobody here made them scramble fifteen yards backwards. They did it themselves. We don't need to shut up, and if any of them happened to see opinions here they don't like all they need to do is pull on their big boy pants and improve their games. It's about being a professional - do you really want to give theses guys a pass on that?
being accurate for 6 passes on one drive doesnt make you accurate. anyone can be accurate with a small sample. he was what, 6/16 for the game? accuracy is about being consistently accurate. not being accurate 1 drive a game. same deal with college, there were times he hit throws, but he couldnt consistently do it. his accuracy isnt there.

It was actually nice to see the coach play the top fifty pick for once... he should have been getting reps in practice and real game actions a long time ago. Petty should be sent to the PS and they should carry three QBS.
I think his throws last night exhibited more of the same from his college days; great accuracy when throwing 10+ yards but erratic on short throws with no touch on checkdowns. I'd compare his arm to a powerful sports car. When he's on the highway he can gun it, but he hasn't learned the finesse to drive it on the back roads yet. Is taking a little heat off of short throws learnable or is it an instinct he can't get rid of? Time will tell, but a year on the sidelines can't hurt.
you can't just send someone to the practice squad. You have to cut them and let them clear waivers before trying to sign them to the PS. That means any team can sign them before you have a chance.
If you watched the game you would know at least 5 of his incompletions were because of terrible blocking. Then another screen pass (that would have won us the game) was dropped. He also had two drops on his first drive... He should have been 12/16 easy. On top of that he was millimeters away from a 2nd TD. Not to mention Wesley Johnson was in his first drive. Then he was replaced with some bum on the street that put a helmet on for the first time in his life 5 minutes to game time. Did you see how terrible some of those snaps were? Did you see Hack take them in stride and still stand tall? Doubtful you did. Based on your comments you didn't watch the plays he was in.
Hackenberg was solid enough for his first live game action. He played much better than the box score indicates and delivered a couple strikes down field on top of a dime of a fade ball. He's obviously not ready, but the coaching staff and front office knew this coming in. He has all the tools to become a quality NFL player. I'm sure he had flashbacks of his time spent at Penn State with the poor offensive line play. This coaching staff actually seems to have a clue on developing a quarterback, something the previous regime had no idea about. Let's see how he pans out before we label him a bust on 16 pass attempts in the 4th quarter of a preseason game for christs sake. Some of you are such reactive morons. And it's a lot of the same dopes defending Geno's horrible play 4 years into his shitty career. Everyone fucking relax.
I loved how he showed confidence and was talking to his team and then he called kill kill at thr goal line and mixed it up. That is not Sanchez or Geno like at all. Petty playing a bit like Sancho out there
Yeah, Petty clearly needs some more work, though I think the interception was miscommunication. Look at Bohannon on that play, he disengages on the block and turns left just as Petty passes to his right. Bohannon then does a 360 looking like a kid lost at the grocery store. Not the best decision, but if Bohannon turns right I doubt it's an INT assuming Bohannon fights for it.
