Since Bryce Petty is the second coming of Brett Favre (on the Packers), the Hackenberg pick is moot at this point.
I wonder what Gailey's evaluation of Hack was going into the draft, or if he was even consulted. The guy has seen his share of mediocre QBs and has gotten a lot out of them, so he should know what red flags are worth working with and which ones to avoid. Also have the imagine that Gailey figures to stick around for a while, because if the plan is for Patullo to take over for him I don't think you'd want to stick him with a huge project to work with in a year or two.
All I can say is, wait and see dumb dumbs, wait and see. There are more people on this board that lack football knowledge than any other board I am a part of, and the realization is easy to see. I'm as hopeful as anyone that the Jets win a Super Bowl. As long as our current front office keeps drafting crap in the early rounds, we will not make it. Anyone want to bet any money on Hackenberg? I didn't think so. I don't post here often and I've visited this board for many years. If folks wanna criticize the Jets for taking Hackenburg in round 2 becuase of his mechanical flaws & other team needs so be it. I don't buy the argument that another team wouldn't have taken him till the 4th or 5th round. There were rumblings from many places about interest in him on early day 2.While his play on the field was questionable...there were also alot of contributing factors. He has off the charts "Chalkboard" skills & physical measureables. He's also a cold weather QB. That's meaningful. For all his questionable play on the field he still managed to set all sorts of PSU school passing records. All in the wake of all that negative national attention. Jets obviously had some conviction when they made the selection.It also appears they have a very specific plan for Hack's development.One that really builds him from the ground up.They're starting by making sure he has the mental part down.Reading defenses,situational,audibles,game management.He's taking in alot of things around him as well as perspective.from both Fitz who has taken him under his wing as well as Petty showing growth a year ahead of him...trying to overtake a veteran losing his grasp, All meaningful experience. If he masters this playbook including presnap hot reads,protection audibles, & identifying defensive coverage...you'd like to think it will keep him afloat while he works out the kinks mechanically with his feet & ball placement. I'll say this: Nobody said the strength of an elite QB's game had to be pinpoint accuracy or completion percentage. If the guy can manage the game, find a way to move the chains & use that size w. the big arm to make a TON of big plays in Chan's offense that will suit the Jets just find. It's about scoring points..the Winds of the Tri state have always seemed to be kindest to the Jets passing game when it's a down field vertical attack w/ physical receivers & a tough comp[limentary running game.That seems to be the direction the Jets are going & Hack could be a big part of that starting next spring.If you're looking for a finesse Dink n dunk west coast offense with lots of precise ball placement...look elsewhere.
I like the kid. I'm just not convinced the Jets can develop him properly. When was the last time that happened?
When was the last time the Jets had the current FO and CS? We have actual experienced, intelligent grown ups running the show now, not a bunch of clueless novices.
I feel good about this regime, more than years past. No more rushing QBs out, no stupid color wristbands. They are actually taking their time. They are breaking down the QBs and rebuilding their mechanics, before they rush them out there. Both Petty and Hack are projects in different ways.
I don't know who came up with the idea on this board, but, about a week ago I saw someone mention it would be a good idea to put Hack on IR. Then, a week later that asshat Maneesh Mehta, steals the idea. Not the first time I've seen that Punjab troll this board. Guy has no originality.

I think most people who keep posting about putting him on IR is because 1, either they don't understand that you can't practice on it or 2, we don't want to lose an up-and-coming WR who can make an impact. sure in a perfect world we want to keep everybody but we can't.
I agree with you. Same for Bryce, if he goes into the season as the 3rd QB. Another reason why Geno should be let go, the development of our 2 year and Rookie QBs. If we lose Fitzpatrick for extended time, I don't think Geno is a hold the fort guy, Geno has never held the fort, id rather see what we have long term in the two kids. A case of losing the battle short term to win the war long term.

While I never wish injury on anyone, our best bet is someone has a starting qb or significant backup get hurt and is a good enough team that they would give something for Geno. It then puts us in a dangerous position as well. Having a "win now" team makes it hard or risky to trade him.
It's hard to imagine that they would shelve him and not keep him within the team. Don't see it. Unless they can manipulate things and do it short term with one of the QB's, Petty or Geno? Is that possible week to week or with a limited PUP or IR designation?
The argument made by some in here and in the media, that Geno should stay because he is the only one with starting experience is a facile one. With Bledsoe, Brady had no experience, Dak Prescott is the backup in Dallas. Hell, Garapollo is the backup in New England, plenty of backups with no experience, on win now teams.
I think each team is only allowed to use the short term IR for 1 player a year. Best to use it where there is a need for that player later in the season than stashing a QB that won't see the field anyway.
