You can't make this pick where it was made if the OC or the QB coach has real doubts. I'm guessing the Jets spent a lot of time this winter and spring trying to make heads or tails of Hackenberg and they collectively thought heads was more likely to come up on the toss.
Kind of makes you wonder how often this happens. Coaches trying to fit square pegs in round holes. You know, that was one of Bill Parcells' greatest attributes...fitting what he was doing to the personnel on his team and then slowly getting "his" guys in the key locations. I think we just saw a prime example of a coach doing that very thing...square peg/round hole. Usually it's not quite this drastic in its' manifestation but when you toss in the loss of 20 scholarships and all the sanctions it magnified the entire situation. Sadly it falls on the QB. They won't talk about the specific o-lineman that couldn't block a 5th grader or receivers that dropped 34% of their passes...no, it all comes down that the QB that so effectively ran an offense that won multiple SB's....as an 18yr. old...couldn't take the world on his shoulders and block for himself and catch his own pass. All he could do was peel himself off the grass after getting pasted 103 times in 3 years.
Orienting 2 of Hack's major flaws in a Jets-specific manner: - He misses a lot of throws high, but we have a bunch of trees at wide receiver. Marshall and Decker should be able to help out with errant throws. - On the other hand, he has really poor touch on checkdowns. He spikes a lot of balls at his RB's feet and just guns others into uncatchable spots. Seeing as dumpoffs to Forte figure to be a major part of our offense, this could be a really big problem. Of course, all 3 of the players I mentioned might be done playing for us by the time Hack sees a snap.
If the GM was that obsessed with the player he probably would have engineered a trade down in the 1st and taken him there. I think the Jets scouting staff and brain trust collectively bought into Hackenberg and he was an easy pick at 51 because of that.
Big Cat - can you post Cliff's Notes of the 1 Hr 30 min video. He's streaming the scouting video and the buffering made it unwatchable for me.
I see a QB that has a strong arm, but doesn't step into his throws, perhaps because the protection isn't very good. This can be corrected. He definitely has some real potential that hopefully can be brought out by the Jets coaching staff.
You can't blame 103 sacks on the offensive line. I have watched some of the sacks and the some had to do with his reads, not identifying the hot receiver or calling an audible. The rest I saw was his elusiveness is pedestrian. That is bad for the college game and even worst for the pro game because everyone is a tick faster and the scheme are more deceiving and creative. Now in time he might get it but he is a shell shock QB and reminds me of David Carr. Carr was #1 and took a beating and never got the mental toughness part fixed.
Hackenburg was drafted as one of HS Americas highest rated QB by PState Believe it or not guys the Jets FO is banking on that mojo fom 3 or 4 years ago....Hack was better HS prsopect than Lynch or Petty? lol That's my only reasoning in trying to make sense of the pick smh ...we could have taken Lynch before Denver but wanted this guy wow Prove it to me Chan haha This whole draft has got to part of Macs 5 year fix it plan certainly not win now....where was Hoyer signing when we needed it? No we had to wait and draft C Hackenburg!? Pretzel logic imo and just plain ole stupid...restructure contracts free up 2 mil and at least you got a vet QB Must not have had enuf Fitz money if we did that ...I guess Get ready to tank in 2016 if Geno at the helm. Unless Fitz has some secret deal already...this is not looking good Maybe they start Petty and Hack for the fun of it after Geno shits the bed
I can't fathom how Lynch in the first round seems like that much better of an idea than Hack in the 2nd.
Nothing like Carr at all. Some sacks were his fault definitely but majority were on his Line, when you can rush 2 guys and get a sack in 1.5 seconds there's no way a QB can be blamed.
