I'm sorry I'm just not impressed. This kid was sacked 103 times in his college career. He's very stiff and the elusiveness you talk about he will not escape in the pro's. I saw bad accuracy and not just on the deep ball but short throws.

Anyone who watches the breakdown of Hack's mechanics and doesn't get excited about the fact that having him around good coaching at the NFL level could turn this kid into a star is just blind.
Playing to a QB's strengths is Gailey's strong suit and I'm confident that this kid switching back to a Pro style offense is going to dramatically change not only his lack of confidence which was squashed with the lack of protection and help at the skill positions but when you add in his football IQ the sky is the limit for this kid.

If Hack comes in with a chip on his shoulder we are going to have a beast under center for years to come.

Was shell shocked by his junior year, couldn't even get screen passes off, coach was absent, receivers mediocre with constant drops...with Chan's help he will blossom, has all the tools

His arm is incredible. He throws the ball so effortlessly

I think the Gruden film basically gave you what you needed to see:

    - Hack was mum about it, but basically left college because his coach wasn't up to snuff, and he didn't want to spend another year getting killed behind an awful O-line
    - His coach asked him to change his feet, it wasn't natural for him, and his footwork was a problem because of it; coach's decision- and a bad one
    - It shows character that he didn't throw his players/coach under the bus, even though he could have
    - He has talent, on and off the field
    - He holds on to the ball too long
    - His ball location is inconsistent, and seems to vary between great and awful
    - He still needs a lot of work

I'm cautiously optimistic that he can turn into something, but it still looks like a bit of a long shot.

I liked the BC game tape from a throwing perspective, but keep in mind in that game he lost 2 fumbles, one of which turned into a TD drive. Against BC he missed throws here and there, but went 34/50 for 371 with 4 TDs and no INTs, which is pretty good no matter what (fumbles aside). Granted, BC is a middling ACC team (they went 7-6 that year, same as PSU), but still, that's a December game where he was down 2 scores and came back to win in OT. Can't hate on that, it was a solid effort.

I like the pick, maybe it was a bit early, but if he becomes the Jets starter, then he was worth the 2nd pick and more.

My concerns after watching much tape, is his overthrows and his balls don't look pretty. He throws a lot of wobbly passes and he doesn't have the tight spiral you would like. In the NY wind, this may be a problem.

Not trying to be stuck up, but this thread isn't for just statistics. Have you watched some of the sacks? I have watched at least 20 so far with plans to watch more and I can assure you that most of them are not his fault. He can correctly identify who is blitzing, call it out, and still get hammered within a second of the snap. I encourage you to show us some samples of him holding the ball too long because I'm sure they are out there.

Take it with a grain of salt- it was only 1 game- but in Yankee Stadium for the Pinstripe bowl (not an ideal wind field for football, you'd imagine), he went 34-50 for 4TDs and 0INTs. So, I'm not all that worried about his spirals in the wind, as much as I am concerned about him throwing one hoppers to the running back out in the flat- which he did that game. Every QB bonks one now and again, but it always drove me nuts with Sanchez. Hopefully he can correct it.

I don't like the pick in the second, I'm also weary of the excuses that are constantly made for him, but because he is a Jet now, I'm going to root for him and I hope Chan can fix whatever needs to be fixed.

The arm is crazy good, it's like Brett Favre awesome. If chan can smooth out the rough edges, wow, we are set for the next 10 years.

Do you guys want to see negative plays too? I feel like we've all seen the instances of him air mailing/spiking throws to open receivers but I can include some if you want to see them. Another thing that strikes me is that he doesn't have a very good deep ball for someone with such a strong arm. Hopefully it goes back to the footwork again because it looks a lot better his freshman year (then again, Robinson could be the one making them look good).

This game in Minnesota is extremely windy by the way, so I think it's a good one to look at since he'll be playing in MetLife. His throws seem absolutely unaffected.

0:19: He's really good at throwing these play action bootlegs on the run. Another throw he's awesome at, that wasn't in this game, is the PA naked bootleg where the outside defender is unblocked and he hits his receiver in the flat while getting pummeled. That's a play I see in the NFL a lot and his size and arm strength allow him to be great at it.

1:05: Subtle pocket movement around the oncoming rush.

1:20: One of his typical hard play fakes then steps up in the pocket to show off the arm.

2:31: A "wow" play. Play action fake then goes through a cross field progression, maneuvers the pocket to avoid the rush and lofts a beautiful deep ball down the sideline. He looks like Carson Palmer the way he hitches up in the pocket with 2 hands on the ball and then launches it deep. Mind you, the winds are howling and the throw shows no signs of it.

3:13: Again goes through multiple reads quickly (good processing ability) then breaks the pocket to avoid the rush and makes a touch throw down the sideline while on the run. This same receiver ruined back to back awesome plays by Hack.

4:00: Just a simple pitch and catch but shows NFL caliber arm strength while stepping up in the pocket. He definitely moves around the rush while in the pocket more in his freshman year games.

    5:52: Similar play to 4:00.

I don't mean to just spew butterflies and rainbows about the guy so let me know if you want to see some bad plays to be critical about, they shouldn't be too hard to find.

I'm very curious to hear what Chan thinks of Hackenberg. He was at all the visits and interviews, so its obvious he's onboard with drafting the kid. Its not just Mac and Bowles rolling the dice here. If Chan can make Hackenberg a franchise QB, it will be a highpoint on a great coaching career. I hope thats the way he is looking at it and it means a few more seasons with Chan as OC.

Absolutely. Mac and Bowles are definitely not drafting a QB without the approval of Chan Gailey.

People are quick to bash this pick, but something about it really intrigues me. Not only is this kid very talented and has the prototypical size for this league, but in order to draft him, Bowles, Mac, and Gailey had to all be on the same page. Gailey brought out the best season Fitzpatrick has ever had. He flourished under his watch and really looked great many times. If Gailey sees something in Hack, I am very happy to bring him on board.

Mac may be unproven, but Gailey has proven a lot to me and proved his worth last season with Fitz. I trust Gailey big time

I've seen a ton of hack at PSU being a fan of the Nittany Lions so I'll post a few thoughts.

For one, he has an absolute GUN for an arm. He can make every single throw...and he's someone who's not afraid to make or go for the big play. He's excellent on play action with excellent fake...he puts it all together on those type of plays and throws. He'll make someone like Devin Smith a stud because he likes to throw it down the field.

He has a good understanding of what to do out on the field. His freshman year he showed excellent promise running a similar system Brady was running, so he has a very good idea of pro concepts and running a pro style type of offense.

The downsides are his last two years he's been beat up pretty badly...you don't want him to become David Carr and have him afraid to be in the pocket but he's a tough kid. Also the offense for the last two years was dummed down a lot...not many pro style concepts as BOB.

He struggles with short and intermediate throws, and that's likely due to poor mechanics and bad habits...and what Gruden pointed out may have been key. He's almost Sanchez like on dump offs where he just throws it too hard or almost too much leading a guy up the field. He needs more finesse in those areas. Also, he struggles when you take the first read away. Now this maybe due to a very porous offensive line but he would get nervous it seems back there. He often LOVED his #1 target whether it be Allen Robinson or Godwin for last year for example, so you really don't want him to lock in on a target because he may like the matchup.

There's a lot to like but me personally, I wasn't enamored with the pick. He has the tools you want for a franchise QB, but I've seen some rather mediocre play from him. I felt like he maybe broken due to bad habits, bad coaching, and an awful offensive line. I'm rooting for him and now being a Jet, I'll be watching him more than ever in hopes he can be the franchise QB the Jets been longing for.

I don't think the Jet's take him unless Gailey is 100% in agreement. No doubt about his talent. They need to rebuild his confidence. They don't need to play him this year. I think Fitz will be back and they should take all 4 QB's until the end of training camp. Never know about injuries. Bottom line is I like the pick. You got to keep swinging until you find a legitimate long term QB.

I haven't watched this all the way through myself, but this is a breakdown from the same guy who did the Winston and Mariota videos that I loved last year. Don't let the view count fool you about his credibility, I've seen lots of more well-known analysts praise his stuff and link their followers to him. I think he does a scouting book that's a lot more popular than the vids and this is just a side thing.

Obviously an hour and a half long video isn't for everybody, nor is it to be watched in one sitting, but I'm sure at least a couple other people will appreciate it.

Hack needs to work REALLY HARD on his foot from shotgun. He can watch some Fitz tapes. Fitz doesn't have the benefit of a cannon arm so he can't afford to be lazy with his footwork under center or shotgun.

Please compare to Bryce Petty who someone said is "mediocre" and in same breath as Geno

I think both Hack and Petty are similar in talent but Petty throws a deeper ball...of course Petty won more games in college haha

Nice we are having a QB competition for real...I bet that was Chans input cause maybe he subscribes to RWolf philosophy of draft a decent QB every year. We coulda waited till Rnd 3 but the Jets really coveted him apparently

Correct me if I am wrong but who "tutored " ARogers before he got his start. To h#ll with Fitz let the QB staff and Coaches earn their pay
