who is that DE?? I know of an OLB who was the 1st pick and got 30 Mil, but no DE. And Gilbert won't even come close to demanding a Gholston contract.
draft jackson at 17, then trade up in second round and take gilbert with that pick, sign matt jones to a one year and there you go. Both end positions filled for years to come and you get a big fast wr for who ever wins qb battle. Our defense would be very good if not great. They can learn under Ellis for a year or two then we let him go.
What's with all the talk about Gilbert being a 1st round pick. Where have any of you seen that anywhere?? It's ridiculous.
He's going to go in the first round or early 2nd round. He dominated in the east/west game. So many teams would love to get their hands on a guy who can be 6 5 300, stop the run and pass rush. Think a cross between Richard Seymour and Aaron Smith. The dream draft for me would be Maualuga and somehow also getting Gilbert. Rex Ryan would cause so many problems with that defense. I doubt the Jets are gonna draft a wr or qb. This is going to be a defensive oriented team while Rex Ryan is here.
If you watched him play, you'd know how damn good he is. Per rotoworld: San Jose State DL Jarron Gilbert is "rising on many draft boards," according to Mike Lombardi of the National Football Post. Lombardi thinks Gilbert could crack the first round. Gilbert can play end in a 3-4 or tackle in a 4-3. It's hard to imagine him not going in the top 32.
Yeah, I just watched all of this guys youtbue videos for the first time and all I can say is...WOW. If not for our question marks @ the WR postion, I would be all of drafting him with the #17 pick...All for it. After watching those videos, I almost want the Jets to take the guy over Harvin which means that I'm REALLY impressed, it's just...I've actually watched Harvin play since day one and with this guy...I just have highlights but I wont lie...If the Jets draft the man...I'll be just as pumped up for our Defense as I would if we were to draft a top WR. All in all...I'm all for the JEts picking this guy up @ 17 or maybe even trading down and snatching him up @ around 23-25. I have one question though...Would Gilbery be able to start for the Jets defense right away over Coleman, or would it take him a year or two to develope? (Which is also fine in my eyes) But WOW...He looks like a beast (But then again, so did Gholston)
I still like Kenyon Coleman...he's pretty damn good against the run. If Jarron Gilbert gets drafted by the Jets, he'll provide three things this defense needs: 1. Depth at defensive end 2. A rotational player to spell Ellis and Coleman. 3. A potential 3-4 DE star that will take over with Shaun Ellis is done.
Good points but dont you think we could find a DE later on in the draft that could... A. Provide deph @ DE B. Start off as a rookie who rotates with Ellis and Coleman at times. C. Become a potential overall talent over the next 2-3 years I like this gilbert beast, I'm just not so sure that we can do defense with our 1st pick when our offense has so many question marks.
there is a HUGE difference between "possibly sneaking" into the 1st round and going #17. Generally you would want somebody that was suppose to go in the top 15 to slip to you at #17 not the other way.
That article was written right after the combine...almost every team sent multiple scouts and coaches to Gilbert's personal workout. Just because YOU have never heard of him doesn't mean he's not worthy of being drafted at #17.
Oh I've heard of him. I just have not seen one mock draft where he is in the 1st round, much less the 17th pick. In studying the draft as I do (and I'm sure you are aware), that sometimes players get drafted in the 1st round when nobody projects them to. However, that normally happens at the end of round 1 and I think you would agree its very rare for fans to be clamoring for someone that the consensus is he is a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Now I don't know how good he is. I have never seen a San Jose St. game. The East-West shrine game generally draws 2nd tier type players as opposed to the Senior bowl. What I have heard of him is he is one of the few 34 DE's which could drive his stock higher than it warrants and that he is a great athlete but that his production does not match his athleticism. Trust me, I want a DE as bad as you do but not at #17 (not this year anyway). In fact, a guy I like much better than Gilbert is Ziggy Hood from Mizzou. 6-3 295, great motor, coachable, good athlete, long arms, 3 year starter in the Big XII, production increased each year. I wouldn't be opposed to trading down and grabbing him. What do ya think?

I've got a question: Seeing as how we have a new head coach looking to fill the roster with his own hand-picked players, would you rather see Tanny stay put and forfeit a shot at an extra impact player or draft a talent like Gilbert (who will most likely be gone by our 2nd pick) or Britt, but trade away picks in the process? I would trade up; a guy like Gilbert who can both rush the passer and stop the run is pretty rare to come by in the draft...
You left out something else. A WR has 8-10 possible impact plays a game. A DE 30. For the Same money (which it is because it's slotted) you take the 30 plays a game player. Then you trade whatever it takes to get back up and get Britt. New HC...only two rookies coming in....easy to absorb. Also frees up Salary dollars to pay Leon.
I just want the nasty front 7 defensive players. Wide recievers are such a crap shoot and I doubt any of the wr's we could get will have much of an impact on any team this year. Even the best wr's take 30 games to really figure it out. I would rather let Rex keep building up a dominant defense and take a wr in the mid rounds.
