Because he's so good at LT, right? Ask Trevor Semien how good a LT he is. Any tackle worth a shit can play both positions, then he should be cut
We usually agree, matt, but not on this one. Could Brick have played RT? No. Brick was pretty bad in run blocking, and that's probably the biggest responsibility of the RT. Yes, they have to contend with rushers as well, but run blocking is huge for a RT. Teams will accept an LT that is a great pass blocker, but not so good a run blocker, but I doubt that few, if any, would accept a RT who wasn't a good run blocker. That's been the only real positive for Shell, and he's not even that good a run blocker.
Williams has done a spectacular job and kept this D motivated thru the hardest of times. He is the brightest spot on this team. This Jets would have been lucky to win two games under the previous regime. We couldn't stop a cold. The only idiocy is to think he actually put the CB in the wrong position 6 yards in front of the receiver for that play . Single coverage or not you keep the receiver in front of you. Our rookie did that on his own, and he paid the price.
I agree. If your RT can't run block he's no RT. The exception being a left handed QB. Then you just switch the line around. Conklin is an RT because he excels at run blocking, he's decent in pass pro. Brick was great at pass pro and decent at run blocking, but he was by far better suited on the left side. Beachum is garbage at run blocking, he's not great at pass pro but he's at least average. I could see putting the future LT at LG and keeping Beachum at LT for a year, but I wouldn't even attempt Beachum at RT.
Agree with this. Austin had him in front then slowed up and that is when the WR blew past him. He could not turn and recover. Maybe single coverage was taking a risk but it was a long bomb. He just need to be with the player. Its a learning curve for Austin. He will remember that. Williams is one of the big reasons we were in any of the games, and that is with the rotating Corners, missing LB's etc. He has been a shining light this season and hope we keep him at all costs.
Well said. Austin has grown immensely and overall he has been a pleasant surprise. He will learn from this.
