I hope McElory gets some preseason snaps with the second team, maybe even a few with the first team, considering he started last year. But I think people expecting him to be the answer are going to be disappointed.
GMAC threw two TD passes to wide open receivers...looked better...give me a break. He's third or fourth string for a reason!
quite a bit of blah blah blah in this thread today. please get off the gmac for competition bandwagon, thats not his purpose and not a good move for the jets organization. let him ratliff his way against the tc fodder and understand what it is that he is doing. that stuff doesnt matter though, joe talked yesterday about geno dropping back and planting with his toes pointing almost in the wrong direction rather than perpendicular to the los, did anyone see the scrimmage and was he still doing that yesterday?
Sanchez is having a decent camp, but Geno is playing much better. Without experience in the factor, Geno would start today. If Sanchez keeps turning the football over in practice then he's done. Learning the offense is no excuse, because Geno Smith is a rookie and he's learning the playbook.
I've got to admit that I was a Sanchez apologist for longer than most. For me, last season was the turning point where I came to the conclusion that, despite the occassional moments that he shined, he just wasn't the guy for the job. With that said, regarding the QB competition, I think it really comes down to this: There really shouldn't even be a competition when a 5 year vet is going against a Rookie in his first training camp. This shouldn't even be close, and the fact that it is speaks volumes. I'm not saying at this point that Geno should start, but if he continues at the rate he's going, keeps his composure during the pre-season games (when the pressure from the defense is real), shows that he can read the defense, and understands a scaled down version of the playbook, then I say give him the ball and let's see what he can do.
Good post. I'm basically in the same boat as you (although I came around to realizing that Sanchez wasn't the answer about a half season earlier - late in 2011). I'm just SO happy that Sanchez FINALLY has some legitimate competition and will actually be held accountable for his incompetence.
See this post is reasonable, the current Sanchez supporters for some reason cant see Geno starting for any reason at all. Geno has been progressing very well and a key thing people are missing is that he played a bunch of series with the first squad and was only sacked once and threw the ball away in another would be sack situation. This is great news since the new knock on him is that he takes a ton of sacks but most importantly he is getting the speed of the NFL (even though its just a scrimmage)
I'd prefer Sanchez to McElroy He threw 2 wide open TDs though Mark overthrew a wide open Gates in the end zone
