Leave it to the Jets to have a bad team last year but win games miraculously and screw up our draft position. The big caveat to this guys article is that the Jets draft picks will pan out and we have to give it time to see how it looks. Have to tell you with Millner looking spotty at best, Gino looking awful, Winters looks bad and for this year it is generally too early to tell, Amaro looks good, but that whole receiver draft appears to have been a complete waste. Not looking so good thus far other than the obvious win of Richardson
But in the meantime, why not acquire everything else? O line, LBers, secondary, WRs. Picking the right QB takes time unless he falls right into your lap like Luck with the Colts. Jets don't have to go crazy and draft QBs if there are none worth taking a chance on. I would go with a stopgap that can keep you competitive and then i would surround him with everything he needs. THEN when the time is right you make the move for that QB, kind of like Washington did to get RG3. Even tho he got injured, he was a great player his rookie season
I agree - as I said the other day I am all for drafting OL next year or getting help at WR or CB - I don't want to reach for a QB which is just a recipe for disaster
Yeah, i mean there will be vets out there. I don't know what the obsession is about drafting this stud QB in the draft, that doesn't happen all the time so why keep trying? Until he comes along, build the team. I think if the Jets had a decent QB with an O line and receivers and this defense, they can win 10 games and maybe a playoff game or two. Get another WR, a few guards, and a couple guys in the secondary and they will be in business. There are other options at QB and even if they do draft a QB, there is no need to throw him in the fire right away. Draft a QB and sign a guy like Hoyer for 2-3 years until the QB is ready but thats only if they draft a QB.
Yes, the process is very sound. However of more import is the execution of said plan. So far very lousy grades, Geno over Bridgewater. No athleticism in WRs when Benjamin was available in 2nd round. A bunch of smurf draft pick with good combine measurables but lousy football skills. Money can be rolled forward . Easy to say be patient by the fan sitting on his butt at home who can change the channel. Not so easy from the guy who cuts Woody a $6K check every year on top of a PSL.
Although, I'm not a fan of Idzik nor Geno, a QB that off season was certainly necessary as Sanchez was coming off an impressively bad season preceded by an even worse 3 game stretch to end the season before that. The pick was fine, what has occurred since is the issue.
Well to be fair to Idzik, no one saw Keenan Allen becoming THIS good, and other than him that WR class was fairly weak. I think the second best WR from the 2013 class is Robert Woods, and he's not exactly a " game changer". But there's no way I'll give Idzik a pass for waiting on a WR until the fourth round this year. We could have easily traded up for Lee or Matthews with our fourth round pick(the Eagles did this) or we could have taken John Brown in the third round. And to make matters worse he cut the damn WR we drafted in the fourth round.
I hear you. Cutting that rookie kid is mind boggling. 12 picks is alot of picks but trading a few of them to move up wouldn't have hurt
They gave him the opportunity to compete for the job right away which I believe was the last correct move done with regards to Geno's management. From that point, he lost a competition seemingly rigged for him to win but is forced into the fire because our coach, maybe with pressure from our GM?, had the ultimate brain fart. A year later his poor play is rewarded with an uncontested starting job.
this article makes a lot of sense to me, but then I suppose I'm the choir the writers preaching to anyhow. some thing that stood out to me: "Idzik came from Seattle, where the general manager is John Schneider, who comes from the Ted Thompson tree of managers. Thompson-style general managers hoard draft picks, maintain cap flexibility, and generally avoid the middle class of free agency, only occasionally jumping into the water for a big splash." that right thereā¦ is probably why he avoided gong for over his set price for DRC. or why he didn't sign Sanders and such at WR. While I'm sure he'd love to have them aboard, he won't do it of more than he thinks their worth. no desperation overpays, not even for a few million, go big pay for the big fish and don't settle and overpay for what you consider a middle class signing. Maybe DRC ISN'T a middle class Corner, maybe his one year burst wasn't an aberration, but why give him a good deal more than your asking price on that chance? Yes we have to fix the corner position, but what happens if we choose the WRONG guy to invest in heavily? how does THAT help us out? One shouldn't make a move from desperation, thats how you find yourself in trouble. in short, JI doesn't want to get caught blindsided by a terrible free agent signing that he paid too much for. Instead, go with the value vet and the draft pick, because if THEY don't work out, either immediately or over time, well at least they didn't leave you out of house and home as a result.
That class wasn't that weak. I was a huge fan of the skill position players available that yr. Receivers from the 2013 class better then Woods: - Keenan Allen (I was a HUGE fan of this guy, slid due to injuries way in the past, but we took McDougle who had a worse injury history) - Cordarrelle Patterson - One of the better play-makers to come out of that draft. - Justin Hunter - Had a decent rookie yr, slow start to his sophomore yr. - Terrance Williams - #2 opposite Dez - Markus Wheaton - Steeler Nation is excited for this prospect. If Idzik looked at Allen's tape, saw his route running ability and hands - he should have been a round 2 selection to be honest.
Compared to the 2014 draft class of WRS, 2013's is definitely weak. And Terrance Williams is woefully inconsistent, and to be honest I'm not sold on Cordarrelle's potential as a WR, but I'll still give him the nod over Robert Woods So far that class has only produced two good WRS/playmakers in my opinion. Other than Allen and Patterson, there's no other stand out WR.
I mean it was said when Idzik came on, it wasn't going to be a one year turnaround Then we went 8-8 and got everyones hopes up.
Williams is far better than any option we have on our team outside of Decker and Kerley - it's not even close. He doesn't drop the ball much either. He's having a strong 2nd season as well so far. 5 TDs in 5 games. Cordarrelle Patterson, I think they just need to get him the ball more. He's raw, but his play-making ability is unquestioned. The kid is very dangerous with the football in his hands. That class has 5 play-makers at the WR position, Woods is pretty pedestrian. Any of those 5 guys would have helped develop depth and reliable targets for the young QB.
Yes, I would take any of those guys on the Jets, but I'm comparing this class to 2014 not the Jets. Regardless, I can give Idzik a pass for not taking a WR in 2013, but 14? Unacceptable. Everyone knew WR was a need, and we all knew this was an extremely deep WR class, yet he still waited until round four to draft a receiver, who is not even on our team anymore. We'll be heading into the 2015 offseason, with the same needs as 2014, that doesn't sound like a winning formula to me.
