They get an A for making value picks, but maybe a C/Incomplete for actual value on the 2013 Jets. IMO, since he's unlikely to start until year 2, it's hard to peg a grade on the Geno Smith pick. Then if for some reason we're in a position to draft Bridgewater or Tajh Boyd or whoever, do we quickly move on from Smith without giving him a chance to start, etc? There are so many unknowns in this deal with Geno that I don't know how to grade him yet. I like what Milliner can bring to the team if he stays healthy, but the media will forever link him to Revis, fair or not. So unless he becomes a multi-time Pro Bowl guy, some will think he's a failure, even if he turns out to be a solid pro. I like the Richardson pick given his versatility along the line, but I think the team would have been better served with a pure pass rusher like Jarvis Jones in that position. If it is true that the 49ers were willing to trade up to 13 for Richardson and we couldn't get a good deal done, then I would be a bit angry. I like the Winters pick and think he can quickly replace Ducasse, or rotate behind the oft-injured Colon. Beyond that, it felt like all projects, so I don't feel like I can really attach a full grade until we see who ends up on the practice squad, which QBs get cut, etc.
Take a Bama player, get an A from Bama Zeus, pass on the TE from ND, baker gives us a B ... Situation normal.
B... With Milliner, Jets once again have a solid trio of CB. Once Milliner gets his feet wet, Rex will once again have 3 solid CB capable of playing press in NFL. I think Milliner will need a season of training/seasoning before he can be a #1 corner but I do believe he'll get there. Sheldon Richardson surprised me & was leaning towards Jarvis Jones in that spot. Started watching Richardson's videos & his lateral quickness is really amazing but I'm still unsure he was the BPA. Luckily Rex is a defensive wiz, so I'm sure he'll find a way to make it mesh. ========== Geno Smith was an excellent pickup & I'm surprised that some posters are against his selection. If Jets felt Geno was guaranteed good enough to start day 1, he would've been drafted in the first round. Sanchez will remain the starting QB if he can beat out the rookie. If Geno earns the spot, then Jets will upgrade the most important position on their roster. Either way, Jets are winners because they'll be getting improved QB play. When you don't have a franchise QB, no round is too early to attempt a QB upgrade. ========== Looking at the players in round 4 & pretty happy with Chris Ivory substituting as Jets 4th selection. With all the QB drama, it's good to have a solid RB combo & OL upgrades to help whatever QB emerges. 2013 RB talent looks much better than 2012 RB talent. ========== This OL had major holes coming into this offseason & multiple picks were used to address multiple holes along the OL. New scheme, new OC, starting QB in flux, new RB on roster, this offense (and team) was doomed if OL didn't receive some love. Mangold+D'Brick = 2 rock solid positions on OL. Colon = 1-year deal only & he's got an injury history. Austin Howard was NOT good enough to be guaranteed starting RT spot. He's a huge improvement over Wayne Hunter but still wasn't that good overall. Vlad does not deserve to have any starting positions handed to him either. RG, LG, RT = open competition. Colon will get one spot and he can play all three of those positions. Colon is the perfect stop-gap as Jets have rookies (and Vlad) compete for 2 out those 3 OL weaknesses. Every starter on that OL heading into 2013 season opener is either an established stud or forced to earn that spot against realistic competition. =========== Once we get to Round 5-7, don't worry about what is the draft pick's position. At this stage, you're just hoping to get somebody that will somehow stick to the roster. =========== So what has Idzik done this draft offensively? Created some competition at QB. He's solidified the OL to the point where it might be good enough to carry this offense. He's also completed a solid RB combo. Solid OL + Solid RB = less pressure on whatever QB starts. What about the WR, TE? Jets had too many holes for one draft to save them. So what has Idzik done this draft defensively? trio of solid man-press CB has been created once again for Rex. What about the OLB, Safeties? Just like WR, TE there just weren't enough picks to plug in so many holes this offseason. Additional depth to the DL & more dangerous 4-man fronts available to Rex. So far, I think Idzik pulled off a solid job this draft. Talent acquired on both sides of the ball even though it was not possible to address all areas of weakness. Of course we need 2-3 years to see the results but there's no need to get upset now & worry Idzik avoided/skipped the weaknesses on this roster. ========== EDIT: http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-netwo...4923/Winners-and-losers-of-the-2013-NFL-Draft <-- Please check it out. This guy isn't a tool like Manish & Cimini. More than a decade of NFL experience & plenty of them as GM. More rational view of Jets draft.
I think we got 3 of the best positional players in this draft with our first 3 picks. Thats impressive no matter how you slice it. Milliner - Hands down the best CB in this class. Richardson - His athleticism for a 295 man is great and is the best DL in this draft. Geno - EJ and Barkley dont have the overall package Geno has.
Would have given this an A if we had drafted Eifert instead of Richardson at 13. But Richardson definitely wasn't a bad pick and I was happy with Milliner at 9. I was originally opposed to taking Geno Smith going into the draft, but I was under the assumption we'd have to waste a first round pick on him. I was pleasantly surprised he fell to the second round and I had no problem with that pick. Overall it could have been a lot worse. Winters and the other linemen add a bunch of depth. We added lots of pieces that can help this team. Our d-line of Wilk, Richardson, and Coples has the potential to be SCARY in 1-2 years time. I have faith.
things leak out post draft and it is becoming clear the jets plan A was to take austin and smith with 9 and 13..... once the rams did their thing they moved on the fly to plan B (which was not unlike last year with irvin/coples) and selected the BPA - milliner. also explains why there was reported to be some discussion about smith at 13 but obviously they decided to go BPA #2 with rich - telling us that taking smith at 13 hinged somewhat on getting austin at 9..... intriguing sequences and tells us just how quick ur plan has to change.
The more I think about it, the more I like this draft.. Overall giving it a B, but I think Idzik did a pretty good job considering the way that the draft fell. Considering that Geno was projected to be the #1/#2 pick for most of the offseason, getting him at the top of the second round is worth it, even if I am not totally sold on him
Where Milliner went to school had zero to do with my rating. He filled a position of need, considering Wilson is the other option, and Cromartie may get cut next year for cap purposes. For the record, I would have been happy if we took Eifert at 13, even though I preferred Jarvis Jones at that pick.
