I just turned 17 in March and have actually been looking around for a job as a caddy. I have only been playing a year and average between 43-47 on 9 holes, par being 36. Golf is definatly my favorite sport to play next to Rugby. Also IMO, i played with a lot of golfers and i must say that the clubs dont make the player, the player makes the clubs.
The swing makes the player. I played for about 5 years with no clue what I was doing. As soon as I started to think about my swing and my shots and watched the pros to see how they hit their chips, etc I improved. I still hit horrible shots here and there but at least I usually know why and how to fix it. I think the most frustrating thing about golf is that you can never be good enough.
I finally decided to learn how to play, and took a beginner's course at Chelsea Piers a few weeks ago. Classes are pretty damn pricey, but I learned a hell of a lot in just 3 hours.
A couple years back I played a course somewhere near you that wasn't half bad. Not great, but not bad either. Called Diamondback, where they tell you not to go chasing your ball in the woods. Also stayed at a 36 hole resort somewhere around there, but I can't for the life of me recall the name.
Starting hacking it around when I was a senior in college. Played maybe 15 rounds in the decade that followed. Never took the game seriously until last year when I joined a league. My game has significantly improved just by playing on a consistent basis. And there is nothing better than being the first group out on the course on a lazy, summer day.
I was there for full walking tour of Celebration. I still wouldn't have remembered the name of it, until you mentioned Q school. Nicest course I've ever played is actually is actually in Maine. Sugarloaf. Incredible friggin course. One of Robert Trent Jones' favorite designs.
I play once a week. 9 hole course. Extremely well taken care of. Pretty empty at the time we go. Played today shot 44 (Par 35). Only 15 putts. Very happy with that score.
Had my 2nd golf lesson today...Worked on all technique today... Hit my 7iron 160 yards consistently...Very happy.
Im pleasantly surprised this thread has made it 37 posts without someone saying the phrase 'I like to Golf'
It's not about the score, it's about how much you can drink before the 9th hole... That makes me feel a little better, since I blame that on my shitty score.
At my club there are a number of older members who disliked the "antics" of my friends and I when we'd be home during the summer during university. A group of 8-16 of us could routinely be seen out there as frequently as the old guys, and friday nights and Saturday afternoons we'd have these serious booze rounds. So one Saturday we're making the turn at around 2pm and all the old boys are already on the patio having their first beer...they wait until they're finished you see. We're pretty much twisted by this point. So one of them says to us as we drive by "you know guys, there's more to golf than drinking". To this, my buddy replies "there's more to drinking than golf" I think that got the point across.
