Gholston was tied for second in tackles today and was creating numerous pressures. He's definitely improved and looks like he's capable of holding his own for the next few weeks. Bang up coaching job by Ryan and staff... he looked lost under the "genius".
You guys can pass on him all you want. I'll take him, especially with-out an OLB and DE for 4 games. 3 tackles today in his first real regular season game. He almost had 2 sacks and was throwing players around all day. Get off his dick.
You don't draft projects at #6 in rd 1. I'm willing to give VG a mulligan ...Mangini screwed up VG's mind/development last year. He made a few plays today, nothing special. I have my opinion of VG's potential, I hope I'm wrong. Only time will tell if VG has "it".....if Rex can't bring it out...no one will.
I don't think he was dominant like some are suggesting..but much like I thought he would...he had a positive role for the defense. Rex's scheme is all about having multiple facets of talents meshed together to create mismatches and overall chaos.Based on what I saw today and frankly throughout the preseason Gholston is fantastic at attacking the LOS and collapsing the pocket. That is gonna make him a valuable commodity in this system long term. He isn't gonna fly all over the field and make sports center every week, and he's not the greatest at getting off blocks, but he can disrupt a blocking scheme, push the pocket and create a lane for guys like Scott, Harris and hopefully Pace. Again, Rex is all about meshing together unique sets of talent into one machine. Gholston appears to be a beneficial piece. That is progress.
A a stupid F...in response. Gholston was a project...being converted to a 3-4 OLB.......he never played standing up as a OLb in his life.
I was referring to his concept that you never draft a project as high as #6, when we definitely drafted a project this year, at #5.
Mark Sanchez is not a project. He was clearly the best QB in the draft coming from College in NFL-Pro style offense at USC. Mark Sanchez was the highest recruited H.S. QB coming into College 4 years ago. It's true not all QBs drafted in rd 1 make it in the NFL......but that doesn't make them a project. A project is a player that doesn't have the skillset or ability to play a certain position and the coaching staff is trying to develop that player into that position....ala Gholston. Maybe Gholston will develop into a very good player...time will tell. Sorry to disagree, IMO, your arguement doesn't work.
Sorry, drafting somebody to play the position they played in college is definitely not a project. If the organization has him projected to start early, and the Jets clearly had Sanchez projected that way then he obviously can't be a project. Sanchez is as close to a finished player as you will ever see based on their first start. He played well enough to win even if the defense had not been light's out. The game was a blowout because the defense was berserk AND Sanchez was ready to go.
He had one full year as a starter in college. Besides his lack of experience, any qb, when they come into the league is a "project." They need to be coached significantly to learn about the speed of the game, the complexity of offenses and defenses and how to be a professional. Why do you think many qbs sit out their first year in the league? I'm not going to argue semantics of a term with you. If you don't agree with me that is fine.
I watched the game today and I saw him play a decent football game. So what if he can't shed an O-lineman on a screen pass? Sometimes Urlacher can't, either. The guy made 3 tackles and made no errors that cost the team. he played as good a game as Thomas..or Rhodes for that matter. What would Pace have done that Gholston didn't do today? Let's be glad that he showed up and played well. He did his job, and he held his own. He's not playing up to his draft position yet and maybe he never will, but today I saw a player who deserves to be out there.
Definitely satisfied with his play today. Rex Ryan will have this big boy playing serious football by the end of this season, have faith boys.
Great post. I saw Ghost double-teamed many times. That does and will pay dividends when blitzers get open shots at the QB. Baby steps is the right phrase. He's come a million miles since last year.
First of all, his play was solid today, anyone who was expecting more out of him today is a moron. This was his first start, and he certainly looked a lot better out there than even in the preseason... I think he has made some big strides, and he gives another dimension to this defense especially once we get pace and ellis back. I unfortunately don't think he'll be worth his money by the end of the year, but I do think he'll end up making some huge plays. He saw a mix of DE/OLB play in the preseason and I'd like to see more of that when our two starters come back. it will help add to the "organized chaos" allowing him to drop back as a DE, or rush with plenty of strength to free up pace/thomas.
