Yeah, I met him a few weeks back in Cortland, when the entire DL went for lunch. The guy's hands are HUGE, but he was really soft-spoken, and actually a very nice guy.
I think that may have been what has held him back, ie, he's too nice. Too bad we can't transplant the madbacker's personality into his body.
What's hilarious is that this is the role he should have had coming out of college. He was misdrafted as an OLB. Fuck Mangini, Rex Ryan FTW
No, the role he should have had in college was a 4-3 defensive end, where he could have been a more successful pass rusher. It looks like he'll be solid as a 3-4 DE, but that's not the role he should have had. Gholston's ideal role was a 4-3 DE. The mistake was drafting him in general, as his lack of agility, instincts, and technique made him a terrible OLB in a 3-4. But if he was going to be drafted in the 3-4 Mangini scheme, it was worth trying him out at OLB. He just never should have been drafted in the first place.
you're totally right. I should have said coming out of college on this team. But 4-3 DE is what he is. He's not anything else. I've gone on record saying that if Gholston and Chris Long switch teams, they'll have very successful careers.
Vern's not doing bad at all these days. Funny what a change in position and a paycut will do for a guy's desire to play.
You have to give the Ghost credit during this game and last week's game. Our Rush Defense has been absolutely amazing, and he's a part of that.
I have hope for him to be our starter full time eventually. It won't happen this year and probably not next year but it can happen. Look how long it took Thomas to emerge...
He at least looks like a 3rd or 4th round draft pick now. If this guy didn't play like a sack of shit for 3 years and got some sacks this defense would be terrifying.
