I don't know if he still sucks, but this is why I didn't get too excited either. I guess its better than doing nothing against the scrubs.
He also is surrounded by them himself. He doesn't have Jenkins out their absorbing blockers, or Pace flying in too. It works both ways.
I paid more attention to Gholston than he really warrants last night and let me tell you something, I know it was against the 2s and 3s and 4s, but that sack was just a capstone on a very good night. He was everywhere last night. The biggest complaint I've seen about him is that he can't react, but he did that very well last night. There was a play last night, right around the middle of the game, where Gholston was lined up on the end and it was run to the opposite side. Gholston was orignally pushing his guy backward toward the QB, but when he saw the handoff he broke off, turned, and went around through his own backfield. He didn't make it in time for the tackle itself, but just a fraction of a second more, and he would have. I know I'm a ridiculous Gholston homer. Still, I see something there. He's got the talent to be a very good football player. That sack was big solely for the smile it put on his face. He was getting slaps on the back for a while after the whistle and he had a big grin on his face. He knows he belongs now. It's his time.
Agreed. What a story it will be if he makes any kind of major contribution to the defense this year and it helps the Jets get to where they're aiming...
I'm with you, I watched him a lot and he did well. He still has pretty poor change of direction for a linebacker, but pretty good for a lineman. There was a screen that he read pretty well, got out on the receiver and turned him back inside. With a little more agility he could have made the tackle himself, but he did a good job. No question light years beyond his first two years. Instincts are still lacking, but not his will.
There were a few plays in the first half with Vick. A few misdirection play action runs that Gholston played well, initially pushing to the left towards the RB then suddenly moving right with Vick to pressure him. I thought he finally, finally, showed some instincts and kept with the ball. I couldn't believe it when I saw the sack in the stat line, but he played well for the night.
This was the first year i DIDNT pay alot of attention to Gholston in the preseason. But I gotta say, he was VERY impressive. He still doesn't have the best read and react or change of direction skills, but he's VERY good at shooting gaps in the running game and collapsing the pocket via pass rush. I saw a few plays w/ him in w/ the first team as an "Under" inside DT, when we gave the 4-3 look...and he was routinely getting very good penetration into the backfield.he disrupted alot of running plays the opposition ran. I doubt he'd hold up as starterin that role given his size...but it's another situational weapon at rex's disposal. The first time in a long time..I'm excited.
His play is also starting to win fans back as well, not an easy thing to do with our fanbase. I've been on and off him countless times, but looking at him now, he looks reborn. Long may it continue.
This turn of events shows how we have to have faith in Rex and the coaching staff. If they can make Gholston a serviceable part and/or maybe more then nothing is impossible.
He never lost me!.. I've been rooting for that son of a bitch since we drafted his ass. He has to retire before I hate on him..
I rewatched the game last night, and Gholston was running into the Oline, and would instantly be repelled. His moves to shed blocks are an utter disaster.
the kid was good enough college talent to gain a 6th pick...if he can even live up to a fraction of that talent he will never earn the money we dumped on him, but he might become a nice complimentary piece of the defense
ive always held this stance firm that i wont call Gholston a bust until the very end. and i call this the calvin pace theory. the guy was a meteoric dissapointment for 4 years till Wisenhunt and a contract year came to ARI held out hope for the OLB conversion but Gholston is built to be a 4-3 DE always has always will be. the least we can do is keep his hand in the dirt where he feels comfortable plugging holes and forcing ball carriers to redirect. this year will tell alot about the guy. other than he had no business being a LB.
Not bad last night. The sack was nice but still meaningless until its the RS. I think he's definitely turned a corner though. I won't be so hard on the Vag as long as he's servicable and spells Ellis nicely and keeps everyone fresh. 11 Days to find out...
I was at that game last night, and I was paying particular attention to him. Even the Eagles fans were impressed with the way he played last night. It was kinda satisfying to hear the Eagles fans saying "What the f$*k, Gholston?"
Sooner or later that move must work, that guy has to get worn down from Gholston running into him over and over again. lol
