It all depends on what team pulls the trigger first. I think it's likely you'll see guys like Barron, Iloka, Martin and Harrison Smith go within maybe 10-15 picks of each other. Just depends where that starts.
That's actually a fair argument. Probably explains why relatively mediocre talent at the safety position was drafted in the 2nd & 3rd rounds of the recent drafts.
This decision in drafting a safety will largely depend on the possibility of signing FA Griffin or Branch. If either one is signed, then the Jets have the luxury of choices in that position during later rounds for depth.
Thanks and I like you point about recent mediocre talent going so high at the position. With NBA small forward types becoming all the rage at TE I think the Safty position is due to see a rise in importance. You can't be that 8th in the box guy with poor cover skills anymore. You need to big big enough to play in the box, but fluid and fast enough to cover a 6'5 guy with speed. Things are evolving in the middle of NFL offenses and defenses. I see this as why so many are projecting Barron to us in the first. I think its a lazy way out in a mock because we can go so many ways. Mid teens is far too high for him but I can see some team grabbing him in the late first. Where are we gettign the cap space to sign either of these guys? We have about 8 mill now and it takes roughly around 5 to sign a draft class. Unless we start cutting starters that don't have high dead money there is not much room to play with in our cap.
Don't know if this was mentioned somewhere else but Tyvon Branch was franchised. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/03/02/SPOD1NEUO6.DTL IMO, this is good news. I think he would've been too costly for the Jets and his coverage skills are average at best. This does mean that Michael Bush will hit the free market.
