Nuanced. Primarily. You don't know what those words mean. But your simplistic defense of Geno? Yeah, I get that. We've got a Geno apologist obviously. I think we're good here. _
Geno has shown flashes of being good, but also flashes of being dog shit. He hasn't shown that he has the consistency to be a starting NFL quarterback. That being said, it looks like we may not have much of a choice regardless. I'm in the camp that would rather go with Geno and draft for the future with White or Cooper and take a gamble on a quarterback in the 3rd or 4th round rather then bring in a proven scrub (which is all that is floating around the qb FA market right now). If Geno plays the same or regresses ala Muck Sanchez we can cut him loose after this year without hesitation, and have White or Cooper to help out whoever we go with as QB in 2016, whether its our 2015 draft pick or someone else.
It's like they've been putting regular unleaded into a Ferrari. Only they don't have a Ferari, they have Geno Smith. Let's find the Ferrari, then feed it high octane. They should, however, build the garage to protect it before bringing it home.
Going forward, he'll either turn into our franchise QB, or more likely be a backup. Once his rookie contract is up, he will than either remain the Jets backup, or go to another team to be their backup. I'm sure a coach will love his physical tools, and think that he can turn him around.
The defense of Smith based on the assumption that the Jets OL is below average is nonsense. The metrics do not show that. The OL is actually above average in the running game, which tells you something. It tells me that even its ranking in the passing game would likely be higher with a Qb who had better pocket sense and presence than Smith, who is awful in that regard. Yes, Winters was pretty bad, and Colon committed too many penalties. But below average? The OL was not below average.
The OL was definitely below average in pass protection. Metrics regarding the running game have nothing to do with evaluating their ability to pass block. Especially with an offensive line that was specifically built for the running game.. Colon & Guacomole have never been known for their ability to pass block, the opposite in fact but Idzik knew that when he acquired them.. Couple that with a young guard in (winters/aboushi) who kind of suck overall and a center who had a down year and you see what we had. Surely Smith could improve his pocket awareness overall, no one can dispute that, but multiple times a game there was times when he found rushers immediately in his face, particularly coming from up the middle. It wasn't just Smith either, Vick faced the same problem. There were definitely times when Smith held onto the ball way too long, but if we are going to criticize him for that we also should talk about the times when he avoided the rush right in his face almost immediately and wasn't sacked. That's tough on any QB, especially a young one who isn't very good like Smith. The OL needs a rebuild perhaps just as much as the QB position.
You can claim that all you want, but at least I have evidence of a ranking that disputes your assertion. Here's what PFF said about the Jets OL 13. New York Jets (26th) Pass Blocking Ranking: 8th, Run Blocking Ranking: 19th, Penalties Ranking: 23rd Stud: The leader of this group, Nick Mangold, was back to his best this year and topped our center rankings before going down hurt. Dud: Brian Winters earned his benching with a terrible -15.3 grade on only 381 snaps. Breakdown: They got better when Oday Aboushi moved into the lineup. The move to bring in Breno Giacomini was a moderate success with him holding down the right side without being a liability. However, as a whole, the group gave whoever was behind center ample time to miss their targets. https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2015/01/08/2014-pff-offensive-line-rankings/3/ As for saying the team's ability to run the ball has nothing to do with their ability to pass block, that is simply incorrect. Yes they can and should be judged by different metrics. But a team's ability to run the ball is very much related to their passing game, as in that it should open up the passing game since the opposing D has to be more concerned about stopping the run.
8th in pass blocking/ 19th in run blocking? come on you watched the games theres no way PFF has that one right a teams ability to run the ball has a great effect on a team's passing game, yes, but that's an entirely different argument and isn't much related to blocking.
Nice Analogy. In your view, what car would Geno be? Perhaps a British Motor Works car, which can be high performance at times, but at other times, something is mechanically wrong with it and it's in the shop? No, that's not quite right, because that would correspond to Geno being injured. What's a car that's mechanically sound, has some high-performance aspects, but all too often runs like one of those awful East German cars from during the Cold War era?
I still have faith that Geno can be a good QB, and I want him to succeed. The chances of him turning into a franchise QB are pretty slim, but so are the chances of us finding a franchise QB by continually using high picks on the position - not to mention the harm it does to the rest of the team. Sorry to all of the Glennon/Jameis/Mallett/Cutler/Mariotta lovers, but this year's QB class is weak, and the available FAs/Trade options are weaker still, and will cost a lot more than we are currently paying Geno. What will it be like around here when we are bitching about Cutler's shitty play AND his $15 million salary? Let's get behind Geno and see if he can build on his finish from last season.
We are good. Who is the "we"? Really, just saying, until the Jets actually have a good OL and WR corps, it's premature (yeah, you'll probably have to look this one up too) to judge ANY Jets QB. I don't think it's a stretch to say that the lack of good pass blocking and lack of consistent threats at the WR position have contributed to the poor play of the last three starting QBs for the Jets. You are simply focusing on the last QB to be sabotaged by these deficiencies (sorry, trying not to introduce too many new concepts here).
