So because its the passing era it's therefore written in stone that if a QB gets benched he can no longer play? Listen to the logic. It doesn't make sense. What if Vick started the next 3 games, then they go back to Geno and he plays well. Your telling me that can't happen because it never has before and it's the passing era? For the record, I don't think Geno is the future. But the idea that you can't bench him and then try him again makes no sense to me.
I say you get that guy and let him "compete" for the job. If this hypothetical prospect is as great and Geno as bad as you present, the results will bear it out. Let's just stop handing shit over to people without earning it.
I can name 2 but the thing is the Jets have confidence in Geno. They are giving him a chance to get out of his funk. He's been up and down and I don't think benching him means that he can't ever be good. He's definitely shown progress, his biggest issue is decision making. He'll make a few nice plays then he'll do something stupid to nullify his good play. I hope he turns it around and it's still early. But he has a long way to go.
Totally agree Nobody should be handed a job. If we end up drafting a guy next year he shouldn't just be the QB cause of where he was drafted. You let him compete with everyone and earn it.
1. Yes, the rules have been implemented to help QBs. Sure Geno could pick up a football and play under certain circumstances, but I don't expect him to just "understand" things because he got benched. The only way for a QB to truly learn this game is to experience it first hand. I don't think benching him would work one bit. 2. Why would the Jets bench Vick after 3 games? You can't just go back and forth between QBs. Never has this scenario presented to me worked out well for any young QB in this era. 3. Sure we can try him again, he's going to suck just as much as he sucks now. He still holds onto the ball TOO long, doesn't make reads.
I'm not disagreeing on competition at all, I'm just saying the majority of this game is mental - if you can't take what you learned in class and apply it to the field you are going to suck regardless. Competition is only going to get you so far in regards to QB development. The QB needs to take the job by the balls, own it and show improvement. Competition won't do that, that's on the QB to prove you are the man. This talk isn't about announcing the starting QB, it's about progressing and getting better.
1. I'm not saying he's just going to understand things. 2. I was using 3 games as an example. Vick should come in and play and you see how he looks. He plays well he stays in, he plays poorly and he comes out. 3. Not saying he might not do that. He needs to go to the bench. If he goes to the bench he might never see the NFL field again. But the idea that he can't is what i'm arguing. He can go to the bench and come back and possibly be better for it is my point.
Oh OK - I see where you are going, I thought you believed Geno was going to turn it around after being benched. I mean I guess we could play the QB carousel why not, we got nothing to lose at this juncture.
No. Yeah, i'm not saying that benching him is going to magically save him. But all I know is that he is bad right now and he's still the starting QB. That has to change. And yeah the QB carousel is not ideal but for teams who don't have any QB's it is what it is. Ride the hot hand, if there is one. If Vick came in and performed better then Geno he should stay in and we should be looking for a new QB this off season. We should probably be looking for a new QB regardless anyway.
Yep, basically. There's nothing else to lose other than the season, and I really can't fathom a quarterback change at this point if only for a couple of games. If Vick comes in and stinks equally as Smith has then it speaks equally to the personnel as it does the quarterback play. I'm not advocating Smith needs to be benched forever but he needed to be benched at halftime of this past game and maybe even the Bears game as well.
Yeah, I agree with this. At least it would be entertaining to watch Vick in a Jets Uni - I think he def puts up more points then a Geno Smith led offense, TOs won't go away tho prob.
I would much rather see Vick in for at least some hope. There is no way we are getting the # 1 draft pick any way. What difference does it make if we have to trade up a # 20 first round pick or a # 5 first round pick for a shot at the best QB in the draft. QB depth would be - 1) New QB 2) Vick 3) Geno riding the pine for 10 more years to learn the game.
can someone please explain what exactly it is that makes them want to hang there hat on geno smith? please save the "just have some patience he needs to develop" crap too. no shit qbs need to develop ... they usually show a high level of play in spots that earns them the development time. you don't just keep throwing shit qbs on the field while chanting develop and suddenly have a qb blossom because they spent enough time sucking. what does geno do that's so great he's worth developing? what is his biggest strength? what parts of his game stand out as translating to a good nfl qb?
We have everything to lose by playing Vick. Vick sucks. Period. Smith, at least has the excuse of being in his second year....at this point, having run one QB out of town, the team needs to weather the storm and put every effort into coaching Smith through this.....it's really that simple. this team is losing this season, because of a lack of patience. Right now, with Sanchez. Thats history, but you still have a playoff winning HC, and riding him out of town will double down on that mistake. At 1-3 the season is pretty much over, so you need to work on establishing Smith as the QB, if it is at all possible...going to an almost was, but never would be player in his twilight years, gains you nothing but more guaranteed futility,. Smith has hope...at this point you need to do everything to get him to where he needs to be, Sanchez deserved two seasons with a new OC, given where he was drafted. you Cannot make the same mistake with Smith. As much as I hate to say it, Geno needs at least one more season before you close the book on him... (p.s. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE GET CHARLIE WEIS on the phone?...sorry marty)
Smith can play...you're selling him short. he didn't blow a 21 point lead to GB. He didn't take 7 points off the board (the fumble recovery) or give the bears 7 on a backwards PI call. The officials did,. both of those factors contributed to two losses, and were as clear as day, to his detriment, he spotted Chicago 7 off the bat...and in two instances playcalling caused us (with Genos help) to take three off the board in both games. I'm not a Smith fan, but lack of patience at the QB and HC position are the worst mistakes teams can make. the Vagiants, and Steelers are both examples of what to do at those positions...that's why they win.
Decent accuracy, the ability to use his feet, good touch on his throws, strong arm. Even after the pick 6 he went 11-13 for 150 yards and a TD. There is something there and he's shown something in each of the 4 games. His biggest issue is decision making. If he's able to tighten that up he will be good.
He's shown an above average ability to extend a play, and the ability to save himself, getting something out of nothing. And does it regularly. now..it would be fair to point out, that sometimes he's forced to do that for not going to the right place with the ball in time... He's accurate enough for the most part, and when he needs to he gets the ball there quickly..(meant time from leaving his hands to being in the receivers hands) not delivery from the snap. His problem is the int's and one of the 5 wasn't his fault ( he got hit while delivering the ball down the sideline) that was fucktarded play call before the half, when they should have been sitting on 3 points v. GB, which lead to the 93 yard TD drive. Not Smiths fault. While MM is light years better than Schotty, Smith has not been helped by playcalling here....Smith is clearly limited in certain things, and there hasn't been any rhythmic, short passing game, to ease him into his starts......and bringing in vick 3 times a game for a retarded running play, seems to come at exactly the wrong time imho. FCOL..the player is completing 60% at about 35 attempts per game so it's not like he's not making plays at all. It's just that currently the bad ones...have been brutal. but, it's not his fault either that he's green to begin with, yet is already 20 starts into his career..that situation was mismanaged when he was drafted, Idziks 'competition' mantra was an agenda. Smith should have been afforded the opportunity to sit for a couple years. He wasn't. And he's better now than he was last year, no denying it.
